Florida does have spiders that look white, but there is no verified scientific list of exactly nine distinct “white spider” species. “White spider” describes appearance, not a taxonomic group. The best-supported Florida examples are several flower crab-spider genera and the spiny-backed orb weaver, while a few pale orb weavers are look-alikes rather than confirmed members of a white-spider list.
More than 250 spider species occur in Florida, according to UF/IFAS (citing Edwards and Marshall, 2002). That number shows the state’s diversity; it is not a count of white species. Use the nine profiles below as an identification guide, not as a claim that Florida has nine scientifically recognized white spiders.

What people mean by “white spider” in Florida
A spider may appear white because its abdomen is white, because it has pale body parts or markings, or because a photograph overexposes a cream, yellow or silvery animal. Light also changes how a spider looks. Reliable identification therefore requires more than color: compare body shape, leg posture, markings, web type, habitat and behavior.
Flower crab spiders are the strongest group-level match. UF/IFAS describes members of several genera as white, orange, pink or yellow, and some can change color to blend with a background. They wait on flowers or foliage and ambush visiting insects. Their front legs are thicker and longer than the rear legs and are held out to the sides, giving them a crab-like appearance.

The other conspicuous white candidate is the spiny-backed orb weaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis. It is an orb-weaving spider with a broad, hard-looking abdomen, black spots and red marginal spines in its common white form. It is not a flower crab spider, even though its abdomen can look crab-shaped.
Nine Florida profiles associated with “white spiders”
The first four profiles are genera named by UF/IFAS within the flower-crab-spider family (Thomisidae). A photograph normally cannot establish the genus, much less the species, so treat these as possibilities until an expert examines the image.
1. Mecaphesa flower crab spiders
Mecaphesa is one of the Florida genera that can include white flower crab spiders. Look for a compact body, front legs projecting sideways, and a spider sitting motionless on a flower or leaf rather than hanging in a web. White individuals may match a pale blossom and be easy to overlook.

2. Misumena flower crab spiders
Misumena is another genus in which individuals may be white as well as yellow, orange or pink. A crab-like stance and ambush behavior are more useful clues than the exact shade. Do not assign a species name from color alone; closely related crab spiders can share the same appearance.
3. Misumenoides flower crab spiders
Florida flower crab spiders in Misumenoides can also appear white. Check whether the first two pairs of legs are visibly heavier or longer and held laterally. The spider may be on a flower head, broad leaf or garden foliage, waiting for a pollinator or other insect.
4. Misumessus flower crab spiders
Misumessus completes the set of four genera specifically identified by UF/IFAS as including flower crab spiders that may be white. Without a close, well-lit view of structural details, report it conservatively as a white flower crab spider (Thomisidae), not as a confirmed Misumessus species.

5. A white flower crab spider on a matching bloom
This is a useful field profile rather than a separate species. Some flower crab spiders wait on flowers whose color resembles their own. A white spider on a white or cream flower, with sideways front legs and no capture web, fits this behavior. The same animal could belong to any of the genera above, so the scene helps identify the family but does not select a genus.
6. A flower crab spider changing color
Some flower crab spiders can change color to match a background. An individual may look white on one flower and yellow or pink after moving. Color change is a behavior within the crab-spider group, not evidence of a sixth species. Photograph the spider and the plant it occupies; the context may explain why its color differs from pictures taken elsewhere.
7. The white form of the spiny-backed orb weaver
Gasteracantha cancriformis is the clearest non-crab-spider match for a white appearance in Florida. UF/IFAS describes a range from white with red spines to yellow with black spines. A Florida fact sheet describes females as usually having a white abdomen with black spots and red marginal spines. Females measure about 5–10 mm in body length and 10–14 mm in body width, and the species builds a classic orb web.

Its broad abdomen and projecting spines distinguish it from a flower crab spider. If the spider is suspended in a round, radiating web, has a flattened abdomen and visible spines, this profile is more plausible than any Thomisidae entry.
8. A pale orchard orbweaver that only looks white in a photograph
Florida’s orchard orbweaver, Leucauge argyrobapta, is a comparison case, not a confirmed white-spider entry. UF/IFAS describes an oval abdomen and reddish-orange markings underneath. Bright light, distance or a silvery surface can make it appear pale. Its similarity to Leucauge venusta also brings taxonomic and range nuance, so do not count an orchard orbweaver as a white species solely because a picture looks light.

9. A golden silk orbweaver with silvery or light markings
The golden silk orbweaver, currently called Trichonephila clavipes (older material may use Nephila clavipes), is another look-alike rather than a white spider. Females have orange-to-tan bodies with yellow spots and banded legs; males are small and brown. A silvery carapace or pale marking does not make the entire spider white. Its large golden web and banded legs are more diagnostic than a single light patch.

How to separate the main candidates
| Feature | Flower crab spiders (Thomisidae) | Spiny-backed orb weaver | Pale orb-weaver look-alikes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall body | Compact body; front legs often noticeably robust and long | Flattened, broad abdomen with hard-looking outline and spines | Usually oval abdomen; proportions vary by species |
| Leg posture | Front legs extended sideways; capable of sideways or backward movement | Legs positioned for sitting in an orb web | Leg arrangement suited to web building |
| Markings | May be white, yellow, orange, pink or pale green; pattern varies | White form commonly has black spots and red marginal spines; other forms can be yellow with black spines | Orchard orbweavers may show reddish-orange underside markings; golden silk orbweavers have yellow spots and banded legs |
| Web | Usually waits on flowers or foliage without a capture web | Builds an orb web | Builds a web; type and size depend on the species |
| Most useful clue | Ambush posture and crab-like front legs | Spines plus a round orb web | Web, body pattern and confirmed range—not paleness alone |
A practical identification process
- Record the setting. Note the Florida county and whether the spider was on a flower, leaf, wall, tree or web. A flower perch favors a crab-spider hypothesis; a suspended orb web favors an orb weaver.
- Photograph the whole animal. Use bright, even light and include the legs, abdomen and surrounding plant or web. Take more than one angle if the spider is safe to photograph without touching.
- Check the front legs. Thick, elongated legs held out to the sides support a flower crab-spider identification. Do not treat any sideways-looking pose as conclusive when the image is distant.
- Inspect the abdomen. Look for a broad, flattened outline and projecting red or black spines, which support Gasteracantha cancriformis. An oval abdomen with reddish-orange underside markings points only toward an orchard-orbweaver comparison.
- Look for a web pattern. A round, radiating orb web is a major clue for an orb weaver. A crab spider may sit on a flower or leaf without a capture web.
- Compare multiple traits together. Color should be the final supporting detail, not the first or only one. Record body shape, leg posture, markings, web, habitat and behavior before choosing a label.
- Ask for expert help when the distinction matters. UF/IFAS recommends contacting your county Extension office for identification. Provide the original, unedited photographs and the location details.
Are white spiders in Florida dangerous?
White coloration does not indicate venom risk. UF/IFAS states that most Florida spiders are shy, non-aggressive and generally not a threat to people. It identifies widow spiders (Latrodectus spp.) as the only spiders native to or established in Florida with medically significant venom. That statement is about the group’s medical significance, not about a color test: a white-looking spider cannot be cleared or condemned by appearance alone.
Do not handle an unknown spider. If a bite is suspected, do not diagnose the species from the wound’s appearance; seek medical advice, especially if severe or spreading symptoms occur. A photograph taken from a safe distance is more useful than capturing the animal.
Why a definitive list of nine species would be misleading
“White” has no standardized scientific boundary. It can include pure white, cream, silvery, pale yellow or a white abdomen on an otherwise colored spider. The UF/IFAS material also notes taxonomic revision and unresolved species boundaries in some groups. Those issues make a fixed statewide count unreliable, particularly when a photograph does not show diagnostic structures.
For that reason, the nine profiles above deliberately separate documented flower-crab-spider genera, a documented white orb-weaver form, and two pale look-alikes. They should not be read as nine confirmed species. A careful report might say “white flower crab spider (Thomisidae)” or “spiny-backed orb weaver, likely Gasteracantha cancriformis,” then provide the image and location for verification.
Using a field guide effectively
A Florida spider field guide or the UF/IFAS spider publication can provide useful visual context, especially when you compare whole-body shape and web structure rather than matching a single color patch. Keep the guide as a reference, and use county Extension assistance when a species-level answer is important. Taxonomic names and distributions can change, so older guides may use a former name such as Nephila clavipes for today’s Trichonephila clavipes.
