White’s tree frog (Litoria caerulea, also called the Australian or Dumpy tree frog; a veterinary source uses Ranoidea caerulea) is a nocturnal, arboreal amphibian that can live with you for many years. Plan on about 16 years on average, with one recorded captive frog reaching 21 years (Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute). Good care means a secure tall enclosure, measured temperature and humidity, clean water, varied supplemented insects, minimal handling, and prompt veterinary help when behavior or appearance changes.

What kind of frog is White’s tree frog?

White’s tree frogs are native to Australia and southern New Guinea, with an introduced population in New Zealand. In nature they spend much of their time in trees rather than sitting in open water. Rain gathers on leaves, cup-shaped plants, and crevices, giving them drinking opportunities, while their skin can adapt to periods of drier conditions. A captive habitat should therefore be arboreal with constant access to clean water, not an aquatic aquarium.

Smithsonian describes adults as approximately 3–4.5 inches (7–11.5 cm) long, with females usually slightly larger. Their long lifespan makes acquisition a serious commitment: arrange reliable care for holidays, moving, and veterinary expenses before bringing one home.

What should you plan for before acquiring one?

Think beyond the purchase itself. A frog may be with you for about 16 years, and an exceptional captive animal has reached 21 years, so the enclosure, feeder supply, monitoring equipment, and veterinary access must remain workable through changes in housing and schedule. Identify an amphibian-experienced veterinarian in advance. Ask whether the clinic can examine frogs, advise on UV and heating, and help interpret changes in appetite, hydration, feces, skin, or posture.

Make a written supply list before the frog arrives. Direct-care items include a tall secure terrarium, a lid that cannot be pushed open, branches and broad-leafed cover, digital thermometers, a hygrometer, thermostat-controlled heating where used, a shallow water dish, feeder insects, calcium and multivitamin products, and dechlorinated water or an appropriate conditioner when local tap water requires treatment. Plan for recurring feeder and supplement costs as well as replacement bulbs, damaged furnishings, and veterinary care; no single setup purchase covers the animal’s lifetime needs.

How do you set up a secure enclosure?

Choose height, climbing room, and a lockable lid

A tall enclosure is more useful than a wide, low one. Agriculture Victoria’s welfare code states: “A tree frog’s enclosure should have more height relative to area to allow for climbing.” Provide sturdy branches, ledges, and broad-leafed hiding plants at several levels. Every climbing item must support the frog without wobbling or creating a fall trap.

The same code warns that tree frogs can push lids off. Use a securely fitted, escape-resistant lid and test every latch. Glass lids can trap heat, reduce ventilation, and block UV penetration, so select a design that allows airflow and safe placement of lighting and heating equipment. Never rely on the frog’s size to prevent an escape.

How large should the terrarium be?

A veterinary clinic guide recommends at least a 20-gallon tall terrarium for one frog and an 18 × 18 × 24-inch enclosure for pairs or groups. Those are that clinic’s recommendations, not a universal sizing standard. Increase usable vertical space as the frogs grow, and give groups enough separate perches and retreats that one animal cannot monopolize the warmest or safest position. Verify any group plan with an amphibian veterinarian; compatibility and disease-control risks matter as much as volume.

Compare enclosures by usable climbing space rather than by gallon label alone. A tall tank with branches at several heights can offer more functional territory than a larger but low tank. Check that the door and lid remain secure after furnishings are installed, that equipment cords do not create an escape gap, and that you can reach every surface for cleaning and observation. If a design forces you to remove half the habitat to reach the water dish, it is less practical for daily care.

Use safe plants and furnishings

  • Choose smooth branches and plants with leaves large enough to provide cover.
  • Do not use thorny or sharp plants; amphibian skin is soft and easily injured.
  • Check plants for toxic resins and chemical treatments. Wash them thoroughly to remove fertilizer, fungicide, and pesticide residues before they enter the enclosure.
  • Anchor heavy furnishings so they cannot fall when the frog climbs or lands.
  • Keep a clear route to the water dish and make sure no decoration can trap a frog beneath it.
  • Arrange cover at more than one height so the frog can select a retreat without being forced into the warmest zone.

Inspect new branches, pots, and hides before installation. Look for splinters, sharp edges, loose pieces, and unstable joins. Recheck them after the frog has climbed on them; a secure item when dry may shift after misting. Remove and replace anything that cracks or develops an exposed point.

What temperature, humidity and lighting do they need?

Published care sheets do not fully agree, so treat numerical ranges as a starting point from a named source rather than a universal rule. The Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center guide gives the following targets:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Measurement Veterinary guide target How to use it
Daytime ambient temperature 75–80°F Measure at the frog’s usable height, not only near the floor.
Optional basking spot 82–85°F Offer a localized warm area so the frog can move away from it.
Night temperature 70–72°F Confirm the enclosure cools safely after lights or heat sources change.
Relative humidity 50–70% Allow drying periods between misting rather than keeping everything constantly wet.

Measure, ventilate, and adjust

Install digital thermometers at different enclosure heights and use a hygrometer to see what the frog actually experiences. Ventilation prevents stagnant, wet air; humidity readings without airflow and drying periods can encourage problems. Record readings at the same times each day so you can identify trends rather than reacting to one spike.

Use the readings to evaluate the whole gradient. A warm upper perch, cooler retreat, and accessible water dish give the frog choices. If every level is the same temperature, the animal cannot move away from a heat source. If the only cool area is beside a draft, change the enclosure arrangement rather than assuming the frog will adapt.

Agriculture Victoria recommends a thermostat on heating appliances and regular thermometer checks. Obtain species-specific advice on maximum temperatures before increasing heat. If the enclosure overheats, move or shield the heat source and contact an amphibian veterinarian for a safe correction; do not attempt rapid temperature swings.

Lighting and UV

The veterinary guide says UVB is recommended but not strictly required. Agriculture Victoria discusses UV lighting and cautions that some lamps can be dangerously strong. There is no single bulb strength, distance, or schedule that suits every enclosure. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s safety instructions, provide shaded retreats, measure temperatures after installation, and ask an amphibian veterinarian to tailor UV exposure to the enclosure, furnishings, and the frog’s health.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing a lamp, screen top, reflector, or branch height changes both light and heat. Recheck the thermometers after every such change. A lamp that was safe over an empty enclosure may become too intense when a perch is moved closer. Keep a record of bulb installation dates so declining output or a sudden replacement does not surprise you.

Provide clean water every day

Use a shallow dish that the frog can enter and leave easily. Replace the water daily and whenever it is fouled. The veterinary guide recommends dechlorinated water. Because amphibian skin is permeable, use only fresh, uncontaminated water and keep soaps, aerosols, pesticides, and other chemicals away from the enclosure.

Rinse the dish with clean water and remove waste promptly. Do not let a decorative feature, deep container, or loose plant block the frog’s exit. Water access is not a substitute for environmental control: the frog still needs suitable temperature, ventilation, and humidity cycles.

How to care for an Australian green tree frog: a setup sequence

  1. Position the tall terrarium away from direct sun, drafts, kitchen fumes, and household chemicals.
  2. Install the secure lid, ventilation, thermostat-controlled heating, and digital temperature and humidity monitors before adding the frog.
  3. Add washed, chemical-free plants and stable climbing branches at multiple heights, leaving open routes to the water dish.
  4. Create a shaded retreat and a measured warm area rather than heating the entire enclosure uniformly.
  5. Run the empty enclosure for several days, logging daytime, nighttime, and post-misting readings. Correct unsafe temperatures, poor airflow, or an unstable lid before acquisition.
  6. Place the shallow dish, fill it with dechlorinated water, and establish a daily replacement routine.
  7. Prepare a dependable insect supply and supplementation plan; do not wait until the frog arrives to find feeders.
  8. Test the lid, doors, cable openings, and ventilation panels again after all equipment and furnishings are in place.
  9. Write down normal readings and the frog’s usual resting places so later changes are easier to identify.

What types of food would you recommend?

White’s tree frogs eat insects. Smithsonian lists moths, locusts, and roaches and reports that its National Zoo feeds crickets and cockroaches. The veterinary guide recommends variety, including gut-loaded crickets and dubia roaches, so no single feeder supplies the entire diet.

Build a safe feeding routine

  • Offer appropriately sized, active insects from a reliable source.
  • Gut-load feeder insects according to the feeder supplier’s instructions so they provide more useful nutrients.
  • Use calcium carbonate and a suitable multivitamin supplement according to the product label and veterinary advice. Agriculture Victoria specifically advises following manufacturer directions for calcium and vitamin additives.
  • Remove uneaten insects so they do not stress or injure the frog and so you can monitor appetite.
  • Provide a varied rotation when practical instead of feeding one insect exclusively.
  • Keep feeder containers and utensils away from household pesticides, cleaners, and other contaminants.

The veterinary guide suggests feeding juveniles daily and adults three to four times per week. That schedule is source-specific; adjust for age, body condition, activity, and veterinary guidance rather than treating it as an automatic prescription. White’s tree frogs can overeat and become obese. Do not encourage maximum consumption or use a particular body shape as the sole measure of health.

Record what was offered, how much was accepted, and whether appetite changes after an enclosure adjustment. A missed feeding is more informative when compared with a normal pattern. Do not compensate for a missed meal by offering an excessive quantity at the next feeding. Ask the veterinarian to assess body condition and modify the plan when growth, weight, or activity changes.

How should you handle and observe a White’s tree frog?

Handle only when necessary—for example, a veterinary examination or essential enclosure work. Frog skin absorbs chemicals readily, so residues from lotion, sanitizer, soap, or cleaning products can be harmful. For routine care, observe the frog in place instead of picking it up.

Agriculture Victoria recommends daily observation of posture, activity, response, body condition, hydration, appetite, and feces. Keep a brief log; gradual changes are easier to notice when you have a baseline. If handling is unavoidable, follow an amphibian veterinarian’s technique and keep the contact brief, with clean, appropriate hands or equipment as directed.

Make observations at a quiet time that suits a nocturnal animal. Check whether the frog is holding its usual posture, responding normally, and using perches and water access. Avoid repeatedly waking or repositioning it simply to obtain a photograph. A secure enclosure and a calm visual check protect the skin barrier and reduce stress.

Which health changes require veterinary advice?

Smithsonian identifies chytrid fungal disease as a threat to this species. Amphibians are also vulnerable to toxins and environmental contaminants, and Agriculture Victoria notes that different illnesses can produce similar signs, making diagnosis difficult from appearance alone.

Contact a veterinarian experienced with amphibians when you notice a sustained change in appetite, posture, activity, skin, hydration, feces, body condition, or ability to right itself. Do not diagnose or treat from a photograph or begin home medication based only on a symptom. Keep the enclosure’s temperature, humidity, cleaning, feeding, and water records available for the appointment.

Review possible environmental causes while arranging care: verify thermometer and hygrometer readings, check that water is fresh, inspect the lid and furnishings, and note any recent bulb, plant, cleaning, or feeder change. These checks do not replace diagnosis, but they give the veterinarian useful context and can identify an obvious exposure that needs to stop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What legal checks apply before acquisition?

Wildlife rules are jurisdiction-specific. In Victoria, the welfare code states that all frogs, tadpoles, and spawn are protected; wild collection and release are prohibited; and licences are required for most frog species. It lists the Green Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) within the code and directs keepers to current Wildlife Regulations and licensing requirements, which take precedence over the guidance page.

How do you choose between care options?

Enclosure options

Compare terrariums by usable vertical space, lid security, ventilation, non-toxic materials, and whether branches and plants can be installed without crowding the frog. A larger footprint is useful only if it remains climbable, escape-resistant, and easy to clean.

Heating and lighting options

Choose equipment that lets you monitor a safe temperature gradient, prevents overheating with a thermostat, and provides appropriate light without exposing the frog to excessive UV. Recheck readings whenever you change a bulb, fixture height, screen, or major furnishing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Humidity strategies

Because published humidity targets vary, judge a setup by source quality, measured airflow, and whether it includes drying periods. A constantly saturated enclosure is not automatically healthier than one that cycles between misting and drying. Individual frogs, room climate, and enclosure design can justify different settings; obtain species-specific veterinary advice when readings and the frog’s condition do not align.

Which supplies are worth prioritizing?

Prioritize equipment that directly protects the frog: a secure tall enclosure, reliable digital monitoring, safe climbing furnishings, a thermostat for heating appliances, a shallow water dish, and uncontaminated water. Feeder insects and supplements are ongoing necessities rather than optional accessories. Product branding alone does not establish safety or performance; check materials, follow instructions, and replace anything damaged or contaminated.

A sustainable long-term routine

  • Daily: replace water, check the lid and equipment, observe posture and activity, remove waste and uneaten insects, and record unusual changes.
  • Several times weekly: feed the planned variety of supplemented insects and review body condition rather than feeding to excess.
  • Regularly: verify thermometer and hygrometer readings at multiple heights, inspect branches and plants for damage, and clean contaminated surfaces with amphibian-safe methods.
  • Whenever conditions change: reassess heat, humidity, ventilation, and UV exposure after moving the enclosure, changing lights, altering furnishings, or experiencing seasonal room changes.
  • At veterinary visits: bring the care log, current equipment details, feeding and supplement information, and legal or source records.

With a secure vertical habitat, measured environmental control, clean water, varied insects, restrained handling, and jurisdiction-appropriate paperwork, White’s tree frog care becomes a repeatable routine rather than a series of guesses. An amphibian-experienced veterinarian should help resolve conflicting care-sheet advice and investigate any health change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature, humidity and lighting do White’s tree frogs need?

One veterinary guide lists 75–80°F daytime ambient temperature, an optional 82–85°F basking spot, 70–72°F at night, and 50–70% humidity with drying periods. These figures are source-specific, not universal. Use digital monitors at multiple heights, provide ventilation, control heating with a thermostat, and obtain individualized advice about UVB because published recommendations vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What types of food would you recommend?

Use a varied insect diet. Smithsonian lists moths, locusts, and roaches and says its zoo feeds crickets and cockroaches. A veterinary guide recommends gut-loaded crickets and dubia roaches plus calcium carbonate and multivitamin supplementation according to label and veterinary directions. Juveniles may be fed daily and adults three to four times weekly under that guide, but adjust for condition and professional advice.

How large should a White’s tree frog enclosure be?

A veterinary clinic recommends a minimum 20-gallon tall terrarium for one frog and 18 × 18 × 24 inches for pairs or groups. Treat those as that clinic’s recommendations rather than a universal standard. Usable height, secure ventilation, climbing structures, and separate retreats matter as much as the stated volume.

Can White’s tree frogs live in an aquarium filled with water?

No. They are arboreal and typically live in trees rather than open water. Provide vertical climbing space and a shallow, easy-entry water dish instead of an aquatic setup.

How often should I handle one?

As little as practical. Amphibian skin is permeable and can absorb residues from lotions, soaps, sanitizers, and chemicals. Observe the frog in place for routine checks and handle only for essential enclosure work or veterinary care, using a technique recommended by an amphibian veterinarian.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What signs mean I should call a veterinarian?

Seek amphibian-experienced veterinary advice for sustained changes in appetite, posture, activity, skin, hydration, feces, body condition, or ability to right itself. Chytrid disease and other problems can look similar, so do not diagnose or medicate from appearance alone.

Are White’s tree frogs legal to keep?

Rules depend on location. Victoria protects frogs, tadpoles, and spawn, prohibits wild collection and release, and requires licences for most species, with current Wildlife Regulations taking precedence. Check your own state, territory, country, and local authority before acquiring, transporting, breeding, or rehoming a frog.

How long do White’s tree frogs live?

Smithsonian reports an average lifespan of about 16 years and one recorded captive lifespan of 21 years. Plan for long-term housing, feeder, and veterinary needs.

The Bottom Line

Build upward, not merely outward: use a secure tall enclosure with safe climbing cover and a lid the frog cannot push open. Measure temperature and humidity at the frog’s usable heights, provide ventilation and drying periods, and use thermostat-controlled heat with carefully selected lighting. Offer fresh dechlorinated water daily, varied gut-loaded insects with correctly labeled supplements, and minimal handling. Keep daily observations and seek an amphibian-experienced veterinarian for persistent changes. Finally, verify local wildlife rules before purchase, transport, breeding, or release.
