If she does not return, the kitten appears unsafe or orphaned, or you need help caring for it, contact the shelter or rescue serving your area.

There is no single nationwide phone number for found kittens. Contact names, service areas, hours, intake capacity, and reporting rules vary by location. A local agency can tell you which organization handles your area and what to do next.
If the kitten is sick or injured
Call promptly for professional direction. The appropriate contact may be a veterinary clinic, animal shelter or rescue, or animal control, depending on local arrangements. Explain what you have observed and ask where the kitten should go. Call before setting out; a facility may be closed or unable to accept an animal at that time. The ASPCA recommends calling first, and local agencies may route cases differently.
If the kitten looks healthy, check whether its mother returns
A mother cat may be away finding food, or may keep her distance while people are nearby. Not seeing her immediately does not establish that the kittens are orphaned. Observe quietly from a safe distance rather than approaching or moving the kitten solely because the mother is not in sight.

If the mother does not return, the kitten seems unsafe, or you cannot provide care, call the local shelter or rescue. Ask whether it can advise you, arrange foster support, or refer you to another suitable service. There is no universal waiting-time rule in the guidance cited here; follow advice from the organization serving your area.
Check whether the kitten is a lost pet
- Look for an identification tag without putting yourself or the kitten at risk.
- Ask a shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic whether it can scan the kitten for a microchip.
- Check with the local shelter or animal-control agency about found-animal reporting and any notice requirements.
Do not assume an untagged kitten is unowned. Found-animal procedures depend on local rules.

For older or unsocialized outdoor kittens
Ask a local shelter or rescue about community-cat services, including trap-neuter-return-monitor support where available. The right approach depends on the kittens’ age and behavior, as well as the programs and rules in your area; ask the organization before attempting to trap or relocate them.

- Contact the shelter or animal-control service for the city or area where you found the kitten, and confirm that the location is within its service area.
- Describe the kitten’s condition, whether the mother has been seen, and whether the kitten is friendly or unsocialized.
- Ask whether they can accept the kitten, where to take it, and whether you should contact a veterinary clinic or another organization instead.
- If you cannot care for the kitten, ask specifically about foster help or a rescue referral.
Local examples illustrate why the call should be location-specific: Humane Society of Charlotte directs people with sick or injured kittens to a veterinary clinic or Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control, while Nashville Animal Care and Control advises observing from a distance because a mother may not approach while people are close. Those directions apply to their respective service areas, not everywhere. Cats Protection offers UK-oriented found-cat guidance; readers elsewhere should follow their local animal-welfare and reporting procedures.
