Put a cat’s litter box somewhere quiet, easy to reach at all times, and separate from food and water. A convenient spot for you can still be a poor choice for your cat if it is noisy, busy, blocked by a door, or leaves the cat feeling trapped. In homes with multiple cats or floors, place boxes in more than one accessible area.
Why location can affect litter-box use
Cats need to be able to reach a box comfortably and use it without being startled or interrupted. A box beside a loud appliance, in a busy passage, or behind a door that might close can make toileting stressful or unreliable. A cat may also avoid a spot where another pet or person can block the approach or exit.
Location is only one part of the setup. Box size and entry, litter preference, cleanliness, access, household traffic, and tension between animals can all matter. Cats differ in what they accept, so the best location is one your cat can reach and uses consistently.
How to choose a good spot
Keep it quiet, but not remote
Choose a calm area in the cat’s normal living space. A private corner can work, but an isolated basement or garage may be too difficult to reach or may leave the cat separated from household activity. Avoid busy thoroughfares and locations beside noisy appliances.

Keep access open and the exit clear
The box should be reachable day and night, without a door that can shut the cat out. Give the cat room to approach and leave. Avoid tight corners with only one vulnerable exit, and consider whether children, dogs, or other cats could block access.
Separate the box from food and water
Place the litter box away from feeding and drinking areas. If your home is small, maximize the distance and avoid placing the resources directly beside one another.

Account for mobility and stairs
In a multistory home, provide a box on each floor when feasible. A cat with arthritis or another mobility limitation should not have to climb stairs to reach a box. A low-entry box may help cats that have difficulty stepping over a high side.
How many boxes to place—and where
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines recommend one box per cat plus one; when cats form known social groups, the rule can be applied as one box per social group plus one. Treat this as a practical rule of thumb, not a measured threshold that guarantees every cat will use every box.

Distribute boxes around accessible parts of the home rather than assuming that several boxes grouped together provide the same choice as boxes in separate locations. In a multicat household, separate locations can also reduce the chance that one cat will control access to all the boxes.
If you need to move a box
Avoid abruptly moving a box your cat already uses successfully. Merck Veterinary Manual warns that sudden location changes can lead to toileting outside the box. If you are following a behavior plan to establish use in a different place, AAFP/ISFM guidance says to leave the box in a successful location for at least two weeks after the cat starts using it before moving it.

- Choose the new spot carefully. Check that it is quiet, accessible, away from food and water, and has a clear approach and exit.
- Make the transition gradual. Move the box in small increments toward the new location rather than relocating it all at once.
- Watch the cat’s response. If use drops or accidents begin, reassess access, noise, traffic, the box itself, and household social tension.
When house-soiling needs veterinary attention
Do not assume that a cat who starts toileting outside the box is reacting only to its location. Medical problems can contribute to house-soiling, so arrange veterinary evaluation for new or persistent changes. Straining to urinate can be a medical emergency, especially in male cats; seek immediate veterinary advice if you notice it.
The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines report that 31.7% of cats with house-soiling behavior had been evaluated by a veterinarian in a cited 2016 study. That figure describes veterinary evaluation in that study; it is not a current estimate of how often cats house-soil.

- 2026 UPGRADED DESIGN: TRULY LEAK-PROOF FOR HIGH-SPRAYERS & STRONG DIGGERS — Our overlapping joint design and inverted plastic guards form a tight seal against the metal frame, closing off every gap where urine could escape. Whether your cat sprays at full height or kicks litter like it owes them something, everything stays inside — not on your floor, walls, or baseboards. This is the metal litter box that actually contains the mess
- HANDS-FREE 120° FLIP-TOP LID — SCOOP WITH BOTH HANDS FREE — The lid opens a full 120° and locks there on its own — no propping, no holding, no awkward one-handed balancing while you try to scoop. Just flip it open and get to work. Both hands are completely free the entire time, whether you're doing a quick daily scoop or a more thorough clean.
- TOUCHLESS SCOOP SET — AND A PROPER HOME FOR THE SCOOP — Bag waste without touching it directly, then set the scoop back in its dedicated base — no more leaving it on the floor or on top of the box. The base includes a built-in bottom compartment for waste bags (11.6"L × 8.6"W), so everything stays in one spot. Note: designed for daily scooping; deep cleaning works best with standard larger bags.
- BUILT-IN CARBON FILTER FOR ACTIVE ODOR CONTROL — The enclosed hood channels air through a replaceable carbon filter that traps ammonia and odor molecules before they reach your living space. Combined with the non-porous metal basin that never holds onto smells, you get multi-layer odor defense that actually works. No masking sprays, no plug-ins — just a fresher home between cleanings.
- EXTRA LARGE ENCLOSED DESIGN FOR CATS 30LB+ — ROOMY, PRIVATE, AND EASY TO MONITOR — At 23"L × 15"W × 15"H with an 8"×8" entryway, large breeds like Maine Coons and Ragdolls have plenty of room to turn around comfortably. The semi-clear privacy flap gives shy cats the seclusion they want while letting you check in at a glance — no disrupting their routine, no guessing games.
Check the whole setup if your cat avoids the box
- Can your cat reach the box at all times without stairs or a door becoming a barrier?
- Is the area quiet and low-traffic, with room to approach and leave?
- Can another pet or person block the route or make the cat feel cornered?
- Is the box away from food and water?
- Are boxes spread across the home where multiple cats or floors make that useful?
- Does the box have enough room to turn and dig, with an entry height your cat can manage?
- Could litter preference, cleanliness, or tension with another animal be affecting use?
Merck Veterinary Manual notes that “The preferred location and type of box will vary from cat to cat, so you might need to try different types in multiple locations.” A cat’s actual use is a better guide than household convenience alone.
