Neutering usually reduces sexually driven mounting, but it does not always stop it—especially if the behavior began before surgery. Mounting alone does not reveal why a cat is doing it. How often it happens, what is going on around the cats, and whether the other cat seems frightened or is being hurt are more useful clues. If the behavior is new, persistent, aggressive, or distressing, ask a veterinarian to assess it.

Why might a neutered cat still mount another cat?

Neutering reduces sexually influenced behaviors, including mounting, but it may not be curative once those behaviors are established. Some neutered males may also continue to show sexual interest in females, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.

That does not mean every mounting episode is sexual. The veterinary sources describe hormonal behavior and different forms of inter-cat aggression, but they do not establish one universal explanation for mounting. A single episode is not enough to diagnose sexual motivation, dominance, stress, play, or illness.

What should you observe?

Note the circumstances rather than trying to label the behavior from mounting alone. A short record can help you describe the pattern to your veterinarian; Cornell’s Feline Behavioral History Form is one example of a structured history tool.

  • Frequency: Is it occasional, or does it happen repeatedly?
  • Timing: Did it start after a change, or has it continued since before neutering?
  • Context: What happens just before the mounting, and can the other cat leave?
  • Response: Does the other cat tolerate the interaction, move away, hiss, or struggle?
  • Safety: Is there chasing, biting, fighting, or injury?
  • Other changes: Has either cat developed new behavior changes alongside the mounting?

These observations are not a diagnostic checklist. They help establish whether the interaction is occasional and uneventful or part of a troubling pattern.

When should you contact a veterinarian?

Arrange a veterinary assessment if mounting is new, persistent, escalating, aggressive, or causing distress or injury. Pain and some illnesses can contribute to aggressive behavior, so Cornell advises considering medical causes when evaluating aggression. VCA likewise recommends veterinary examination when an owner is concerned about fear or aggression between household cats; ongoing inter-cat problems may warrant assessment by a veterinary behaviorist.

In some cases, a retained undescended testicle can continue producing sex hormones. VCA notes that locating and removing one requires more extensive surgery. This is not something an owner can determine from mounting behavior; a veterinarian can review the cat’s history and decide whether further investigation is appropriate.

How can you keep the cats safe?

If the interaction includes aggression, focus first on preventing further conflict. Cornell recommends avoiding situations that trigger aggression, separating cats as needed, and reintroducing them gradually with positive reinforcement. Do not physically punish the cat; punishment can worsen the situation rather than resolve it.

VCA suggests daily interactive play and food toys for exercise and enrichment, but these are not established treatments for mounting and should not be expected to stop it.

What neutering can—and cannot—tell you

Neutering makes sexually driven mounting less likely, but it cannot by itself explain a particular cat’s behavior or guarantee that mounting will end. The pattern and the other cat’s response determine whether this is something to monitor or a reason to seek professional help.
