Why a New Birding Buddy Can Feel Like a Lifer

A personal account of meeting a fellow birder on a southern Chile expedition cruise—and why Hayward compares that new friendship with the thrill of seeing a lifer.

A new birding friend can produce the same jolt of delight as a first-ever species sighting. Mary Alice Hayward’s travel essay shows why: birders recognize one another quickly, share the pleasure of discovery, and can turn a brief encounter into a lasting memory. Her story unfolds on an expedition cruise through the fjords of southern Chile and ends with a walk near Puerto Williams, where a new companion becomes, in her words, a “lifer” of a different kind.

Mary Alice Hayward’s essay, “A New Birding Buddy Is Exciting As A Lifer,” published November 19, 2025, is a personal account rather than a field guide, travel review, or study of birding communities. Its subject is a small but recognizable pleasure: meeting another birder away from home and feeling an immediate sense of familiarity.

What “lifer” means in this story

In birding, a “lifer” is a bird species a person has never seen before. Recording one is exciting because the sighting adds a new species to that birder’s personal life list. Hayward borrows that word for a human connection. The new friend is not literally a bird, of course; the comparison describes the freshness and emotional impact of meeting someone who suddenly matters.

That distinction is important. The essay does not claim that every birding acquaintance becomes a close friend, or that travel automatically creates deep relationships. Instead, it captures the instant when a shared interest removes the usual social hesitation. Two people who might otherwise remain strangers already understand why a distant shape, an unfamiliar call, or a surprising sighting deserves attention. The common language of birds gives them a place to begin.

Hayward describes the feeling directly: “I thrill at this connection as much as getting a lifer.” Her point is emotional rather than statistical. A first sighting expands a list of species; a new birding buddy expands the circle of people with whom those sightings can be enjoyed.

The setting: fourteen days among Chilean fjords

The encounter took place during an expedition cruise exploring the fjords of southern Chile. Hayward reports that the trip lasted 14 days at sea. The length matters to the shape of the story: passengers had repeated opportunities to notice one another, compare what they had seen, and build an easy rhythm around birding.

She says the birders on board found one another quickly. No formal introduction or organized program is described as the cause. Familiar travel gear, including binoculars, made the shared interest visible, while the excitement of sightings supplied an immediate subject for conversation. A person watching the same stretch of water or shoreline is already participating in the same moment.

The cruise environment also created continuity. A brief exchange on a dock can end when a boat departs, but fellow passengers meet again over the course of a voyage. Hayward and her new companion were able to share sightings and birding knowledge as the expedition continued. The account presents that exchange as mutual: neither person is simply teaching the other, and neither is merely an audience. They are noticing, comparing, and enjoying birds together.

How a shared sighting becomes camaraderie

Hayward’s story suggests several stages in the connection. They are not a formula, but they show why birders can move from strangers to companions with unusual ease.

Recognition comes first

On a trip where many passengers have binoculars, field guides, or an alert eye trained toward the water, interest is visible before anyone says much. A person who pauses to watch a bird is signaling a possible point of connection. That recognition reduces the risk of an awkward introduction because the subject is already present.

Observation creates a natural opening

A sighting gives people something specific to discuss. Instead of beginning with a broad personal question, one can ask what the other person saw, whether a bird was identified, or which species has been most memorable so far. Hayward’s account emphasizes shared sightings and knowledge, not forced small talk. The birds do the initial social work.

Repeated encounters build ease

Because the travelers were together for the duration of the expedition, an initial exchange could develop into regular conversation. Each new sighting offered another reason to reconnect. Familiarity grew through accumulated moments rather than a single dramatic introduction.

Knowledge is exchanged, not guarded

Birding often involves uncertainty: a glimpse may be brief, a species may be unfamiliar, or two observers may notice different details. Hayward describes the new friends sharing what they knew. That generosity turns expertise into an invitation. A person does not need to be the most experienced birder in a group to contribute; a careful observation or an enthusiastic question can be enough.

The final walk near Puerto Williams

The relationship became especially tangible at the expedition’s final stop. Hayward and her companion, accompanied by their spouses, walked in the sunshine near Puerto Williams. The outing combined the social and observational sides of the trip: they were spending time together while continuing to look for birds.

During that walk they saw Magellanic Cormorants, Magellanic Woodpeckers, and Silvery Grebes, among other birds. These species are part of the scene Hayward remembers, but the walk is not presented as a checklist contest. The birds provide a shared experience for four people moving through a new place together.

Before parting, the two birders exchanged names and bird lists. That small act gives the friendship a way to continue after the ship and the landscape are behind them. A name makes future contact possible; a list preserves a record of what each person noticed. The exchange also acknowledges that the meeting was more than a pleasant conversation during a holiday.

Why the “new friend as lifer” comparison works

The analogy rests on three kinds of novelty.

Kind of novelty What changes How Hayward’s story expresses it
A new species A bird enters a personal life list. The excitement of seeing a bird for the first time supplies the comparison.
A new place Fjords and a southern Chilean port create unfamiliar surroundings. Birding gives travelers a way to pay close attention to those surroundings.
A new person A stranger becomes someone whose sightings and company are valued. Hayward describes the connection as thrilling and calls the new buddy a “lifer.”

There is also a difference between the two experiences. A species can be documented in a list with a date and location. A friendship is less measurable. Its value comes from recognition, generosity, and the possibility of future contact. Hayward’s closing phrase, “I had made another new birding buddy – a lifer,” deliberately joins the precise vocabulary of listing birds with the more open-ended experience of human connection.

How to meet fellow birders while traveling

Hayward’s cruise provides the setting, but the underlying approach can work on many kinds of trips. These suggestions are practical extensions of the story, not claims that every destination offers the same opportunities.

Make your interest visible without demanding attention

Carry the equipment you already use, pause when you are watching, and allow other observers to notice that you are interested. Binoculars can make the shared purpose apparent, but buying specialized gear is not a requirement for meeting people. Curiosity and courtesy are more important than equipment.

Open with the moment in front of you

Ask a simple, specific question: What did you see? Did that bird move toward the shoreline? Have you noticed anything unusual today? Questions tied to the immediate observation are easier to answer than an invitation to deliver a complete biography.

Share what you know carefully

If you recognize a species, offer the identification and explain what led you there without turning the exchange into a test. If you are unsure, say so. A thoughtful “I’m not certain—what do you think?” leaves room for both people to learn.

Listen for the other person’s priorities

Some travelers care about adding species to a list; others are more interested in habitat, photography, behavior, or simply being outdoors. Hayward’s account centers on shared sightings and knowledge, but a durable connection grows when both people have room to explain what they enjoy.

If you see the same birder again, refer back to the earlier sighting. Remembering a detail shows that the first conversation mattered. On a multi-day trip, this can develop into an informal routine without anyone having to declare that a friendship is forming.

Include companions respectfully

The Puerto Williams walk included both birders’ spouses. That detail shows that a birding connection does not have to exclude travel companions. Invite others into the pace of the walk, explain what you are watching, and accept that not everyone will want to stop for every bird.

Exchange contact details only when it feels mutual

Hayward and her companion exchanged names and bird lists before separating. A list, email address, or preferred social channel can make reconnection possible, but the exchange should be reciprocal and unpressured. The goal is to leave the other person with a welcome invitation, not an obligation.

What a bird list can do after the trip

A shared list is more than a record of species. It can preserve the circumstances of the meeting: which birds were noticed together, which identifications prompted discussion, and which places became associated with the new friendship. Comparing lists may also reveal different habits of attention. One birder may remember a bird’s position or movement; another may remember the weather, the landscape, or the moment someone first pointed it out.

Lists should not become a measure of whose trip was better. In Hayward’s account, the list is part of the goodbye, a practical way to keep the connection alive. Its value lies in the shared history behind the names on the page.

Where local birding fits

Travel is not the only route to this kind of encounter. Local bird walks, birding clubs, and destination-based outings can create the same basic conditions: people looking closely at the same place, with a subject ready for conversation. The specific groups, schedules, costs, and levels of instruction vary by location, so travelers should check current details with the organization or guide before attending.

What this essay does—and does not—claim

Hayward’s account is intimate rather than representative. It describes one traveler’s experience on one expedition in southern Chile, including a 14-day period at sea and a final walk near Puerto Williams. It does not provide a survey of birders, a scientific explanation of friendship, or evidence that every cruise passenger will form a lasting bond.

That limitation is part of its strength. The essay does not need a statistic to explain the feeling. It records a particular meeting, the birds seen along the way, the exchange of names and lists, and the hope of reconnecting. Readers can recognize the possibility without treating the story as a guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lasting lesson for traveling birders

A lifer is usually described as an addition to a list, but Hayward’s use of the word widens the idea of what birding can give back. The trip offered birds that were worth seeing, yet the most enduring discovery was another person who understood why those sightings mattered. The connection formed through attention, shared knowledge, repeated encounters, and a final walk taken together.

That is why a new birding buddy can feel as exciting as a lifer. Both experiences begin with noticing something new. One adds a species to a record; the other adds a person to the story of why the journey was memorable.
