Some evidence points to a disadvantage in particular settings: a 2013 analysis of two Colorado shelters found that black cats took the longest to be adopted, and a 2026 U.S. survey found people judged black cats as less adoptable when viewing online photographs. However, Shelter Animals Count reported a strong adoption rate for black cats in its animal-level analysis, so neither result supports the claim that black cats are always adopted last.
The most defensible explanation from current evidence is a difference in how people interpret photographs, not a proven nationwide effect of superstition. The studies measure different outcomes, populations and years. Understanding those limits is essential before treating “black cat syndrome” as either an established fact or a completely imaginary problem.

What does “harder to adopt” actually mean?
Adoption difficulty can refer to at least two different outcomes:

- Observed shelter outcomes: how long cats remain in care or whether they are ultimately adopted.
A perception survey cannot substitute for adoption records, and records from a few shelters cannot establish a current national pattern. The evidence below is therefore best read as a set of clues about when and why a disadvantage may occur.

What the latest photo-perception study found
A 1,004-person U.S. survey
The 2026 study published in Animals surveyed 1,004 adults in the United States. Each participant viewed 40 online adoption photographs: 10 black cats, 10 white cats, 10 orange tabbies and 10 brown tabbies. Participants estimated each cat’s likelihood of being adopted within two weeks. This was a study of judgments about photographs, not a national survey of adopters and not a count of completed adoptions. Read the full 2026 study.
Lower ratings and less confident emotion reading
Black cats received significantly lower adoptability ratings than the other coat-color groups. Viewers were also more likely to label their expressions as fear or anger and reported less confidence when interpreting what the cats were feeling. Those findings identify a possible point of friction in an online listing: a viewer may be less certain that a black cat looks friendly, relaxed or approachable.
What the survey did not prove
The researchers did not show that a difficult photograph causes a cat to wait longer in a shelter. They also did not find that respondents’ self-reported superstition or skin-tone bias significantly predicted their adoptability ratings. The authors present visual ambiguity as a plausible mechanism that could influence judgments, not as a demonstrated cause of real-world adoption delays.
What older shelter records show
The 2013 Colorado study
Kogan, Schoenfeld-Tacher and Hellyer retrospectively examined records from two Colorado shelters with different populations and historical date ranges. In the analyzed records, black cats, regardless of age or sex, required the longest time to adopt. That result supports saying that a disadvantage has appeared in particular shelter settings. It does not provide a single nationwide estimate of how many extra days a black cat waits, and it cannot establish that the same pattern still applies everywhere.

The paper is useful because it measured an observed shelter outcome rather than a hypothetical rating. It is limited because it represents two organizations, their local adopter pools and their procedures at that time. Read the 2013 study.
Another dataset that should not be over-interpreted
A 2020 Animals paper analyzed 7,983 cats entering an urban public shelter in Kentucky from 2010 through 2011. The accessible record describes coat-color outcome categories, but it does not provide enough detail here to quote a precise effect size. That dataset is evidence that coat color has been examined in shelter research, not a basis for claiming a particular national penalty for black cats.
Why the studies do not produce one simple verdict
| Evidence | Where and when | What it measured | Result relevant to black cats | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo-perception survey | 1,004 U.S. adults, 2026 | Predicted adoption within two weeks from online photos | Black cats were judged less adoptable; emotion interpretation was less confident | Actual adoption rates or a causal effect of photography |
| Retrospective shelter study | Two Colorado shelters; records analyzed in 2013 | Time from shelter entry to adoption | Black cats took the longest in those records, regardless of age or sex | A current nationwide pattern or one overall “days longer” figure |
| Shelter Animals Count article | Animal-level analysis reported October 28, 2024 | Adoption performance in the organization’s data | Described a strong adoption rate for black cats and October as an important adoption month | A published numerical rate or results for every shelter and region |
| National shelter context | United States, first half of 2026 | Total cat adoptions across the national summary | About 1 million cat adoptions overall | Any coat-color-specific rate |
These are not contradictory measurements. A cat can receive less enthusiastic reactions in a photograph while black cats as a group still achieve strong adoption outcomes in a broader dataset. Differences in location, listing quality, age, health, personality, season, shelter capacity and adopter demand can all change the result.

Myth check: are black cats always the last to be adopted?
Myth: Black cats are always adopted last.
Fact: The Colorado study found the longest waits for black cats in its two shelters, while Shelter Animals Count’s October 2024 article says its animal-level analysis found a strong adoption rate for black cats. The 2026 survey found a perception gap in photographs rather than an adoption-rate gap. “Always” is therefore not supportable.

Shelter Animals Count also notes that October is an important month for black cats to find homes. A seasonal increase in attention does not prove that Halloween creates a universal shortage or surplus; it simply means the month is relevant in that organization’s reporting.
Myth check: is superstition the reason people avoid them?
Myth: Folklore about bad luck, witches or Halloween has been proven to cause lower black-cat adoption.
Fact: The 2026 survey directly tested self-reported superstition and found no significant relationship between it and adoptability ratings. Folklore is historical context, but the available study does not support presenting superstition as the established cause of a modern adoption disadvantage.
This does not prove that no individual adopter has ever been influenced by a superstition. It means that, in this survey, superstition scores did not explain the ratings well enough to establish a statistically significant effect.

Myth check: are black cats in danger of Halloween rituals?
Myth: Black cats are inherently unsafe to adopt around Halloween because people target them for rituals.
Fact: Shelter Animals Count states: “There is no reliable data supporting the claim that black cats are targeted for rituals; this is widely regarded as an urban myth.” The statement comes from the organization’s October 28, 2024 article. Its accessible text does not provide detailed incident-level numbers, so the careful conclusion is that reliable supporting data were not found—not that every possible incident has been disproved in every location.
Adoption policies around Halloween are a local shelter decision. If a shelter uses a seasonal rule, ask what evidence and welfare concern the policy addresses rather than assuming a ritual threat is established.
Could photography be part of the problem?
What the evidence supports
The 2026 survey supports a narrow observation: viewers were less confident reading black cats’ emotions in photographs and rated them less adoptable. Dark fur can reduce visible contrast around eyes and facial features, especially in a small, poorly lit or heavily compressed listing image. The study’s authors suggest that this visual uncertainty may contribute to judgments.

What remains unproven
The survey did not compare professionally produced and shelter-produced photos, test specific lighting setups, or follow the photographed cats through adoption. It therefore cannot show that a camera or a particular background causes a measurable delay. Treat better photography as a practical possibility for improving communication, not as a proven cure.
How shelters and adopters can use the evidence responsibly
For shelters creating listings
- Use a sharp, well-exposed image in which the cat’s eyes and body posture are visible.
- Include more than one photograph so a single dark frame does not carry the entire impression.
- Add a written description of behavior—such as comfort with handling, play style and response to people—rather than relying on facial interpretation alone.
- Record coat color alongside age, health, length of stay and other relevant variables so local decisions are based on the shelter’s own outcomes.
- Evaluate whether changes in images or descriptions alter inquiries or adoptions, instead of assuming a cause from folklore.
For people choosing a cat
- Read the full profile and ask staff about temperament, energy level, medical needs and interactions with children or other animals.
- Meet the cat in person or request a short behavior video when possible; a still image is an incomplete measure of personality.
- Compare cats on health and behavioral fit, not on coat color or a superstition.
- Ask how long the cat has been waiting and what support the shelter provides after adoption.
What current national numbers can—and cannot—tell you
Shelter Animals Count and the ASPCA reported about 1 million cat adoptions across the United States in the first half of 2026. That figure describes overall shelter activity and is not broken down by coat color. It should not be converted into a black-cat adoption rate or used to validate one local shelter’s experience. See the 2026 mid-year summary.
The most informative local comparison would track comparable cats in the same shelter and period, while accounting for age, sex, health, sociability, intake source, promotion and season. Without those controls, a difference attributed to coat color may partly reflect which cats entered the shelter or how they were presented.
Bottom line: a conditional answer
Black cats may be harder to adopt in some circumstances, but the evidence does not justify a universal rule. One 2013 study found longer waits in two Colorado shelters, and one 2026 U.S. experiment found lower perceived adoptability in online photographs. Conversely, Shelter Animals Count reported a strong adoption rate for black cats in its animal-level analysis. The strongest current explanation is a possible photo-interpretation problem; superstition has not been shown to explain the 2026 ratings, and ritual-targeting claims lack reliable supporting data according to Shelter Animals Count.
For an individual cat, the practical answer is straightforward: judge temperament and welfare, improve the quality and information in the listing, and use local outcome data rather than a blanket belief about coat color.
