Black cats may face an adoption disadvantage in some settings, but the evidence does not show that they are universally adopted last or that one cause explains the pattern. A 2026 photo survey found people rated black cats as less adoptable and had more difficulty reading their expressions; shelter-record studies found slower or lower adoption outcomes in particular locations, not everywhere. Superstition and appearance remain concerns reported by shelters, but they are not established as universal explanations.
What the evidence says—and what it does not
Studies have measured different things, so their results should not be treated as interchangeable. A survey asking whether a cat in a photograph looks adoptable measures perception. Shelter records measure outcomes shaped by local intake, animal characteristics, shelter practices, and adopter decisions together.
| Evidence | What was measured | Finding and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Villarreal, Gebauer, and Ha, 2026, United States | 1,004 US-based participants judged 40 Petfinder adoption-advertisement photos: ten each of black, white, orange-tabby, and brown-tabby cats. They rated perceived likelihood of adoption within two weeks, emotional expression, and confidence. | Black cats received lower perceived-adoptability ratings. Participants more often attributed fear or anger to them and were less confident reading their expressions. This was a photo survey, not a study of actual adoption behavior. Read the study. |
| Trevathan-Minnis et al., 2020, one urban Kentucky public shelter | Records for 7,983 cats entering the shelter in 2010–2011. | Black cats had the highest euthanasia and lowest adoption rates among the compared coat-color groups. The authors described overall support for black-cat bias as weak; one shelter’s results are not a national rate. Read the study. |
| Kogan, Schoenfeld-Tacher, and Hellyer, 2013, two Colorado shelters | Retrospective shelter records and time to adoption. | Black cats took longer to adopt than other coat-color categories in the records studied. The authors cautioned that two shelters in one state may not represent other locations, and staff may not have categorized coat colors consistently. Read the study. |
These findings point to a possible disadvantage, not an automatic fate. A shelter-level difference can reflect local adopter preferences, but it can also be affected by which cats arrive, their ages and health, shelter policies, and other local conditions. The cited studies do not isolate all of those factors across shelters.
Why a black cat may be harder to read in a listing photo
The 2026 survey offers a possible perception mechanism: participants were less confident interpreting black cats’ expressions and more often read fear or anger into their faces. If a listing photo makes a cat’s expression difficult to see, a prospective adopter may have less information about the animal’s demeanor. The survey did not follow participants through real adoption choices, however, so it cannot show that this difficulty caused any particular cat to wait longer.

The same study found that its measures of superstition and skin-color bias did not significantly affect adoptability ratings or emotional perception. That result does not prove those factors never matter in other settings; it means they were not significant explanations in this survey.
Are superstition and social-media aesthetics the reason?
They are concerns shelters have reported, not settled universal causes. Battersea, a UK animal charity, said in an October 2025 release that it continued to see local concerns about superstition and the pressure for a social-media-ready aesthetic. That is the charity’s account of its experience, not a controlled finding about adopters generally.

A 2019 study, “Black Cat Bias: Prevalence and Predictors,” reported photo-evaluation bias and associations involving difficulty reading black cats’ emotions and participants’ superstition scores. The newer 2026 survey did not find a significant effect from its superstition measure. Differences across studies make it more accurate to describe these as possible, study-dependent influences than as a single proven explanation. See the 2019 study’s PubMed record.
What one shelter’s example can—and cannot—show
Battersea reported that one black cat, Spookipaws, had waited 142 days for a home as of its 24 October 2025 release, which it described as five times the centre’s average wait for a cat. This illustrates a long wait at one charity; it is not an estimate of how long black cats generally wait. Battersea also said it cared for 2,454 cats across its three centres in 2024, a figure for all cats in its care rather than black cats specifically.

In the release, Battersea Rehoming and Welfare Manager Rachel Saunders said black cats are “affectionate, loyal, and full of personality, just like any other cat,” and connected longer stays at the charity with superstition and social-media aesthetics. That is Battersea’s perspective on its local experience, not a conclusion established by the shelter-record or photo-survey studies.

Clear, well-lit listing photos and descriptions that show an individual cat’s behavior and personality are sensible presentation ideas. The 2013 authors also proposed ways to make cats more visible in listings, including changes to photos and presentation. These are proposals, not proven fixes: the cited work does not establish that any one photo or listing intervention improves adoption rates or closes a gap.
