Why Bulls Charge: The Color Red Isn’t the Trigger

Bulls do not attack because a cape is red. Cattle can distinguish some long-wavelength light, while movement, provocation and context better explain a charge.

No. Red has not been shown to make bulls attack. In the familiar bullfighting scene, the charge is better explained by the cape’s movement, the animal’s agitation and the surrounding provocation than by its color. Cattle can distinguish some long-wavelength light, so saying that bulls “cannot see red” is also inaccurate.

The evidence is strongest for calves and ordinary cattle in controlled or handling settings, not for mature fighting bulls responding to a waving cape. That distinction matters: it supports rejecting the red-as-anger myth without pretending that a laboratory test has reproduced an arena.

What the evidence actually shows

Several kinds of evidence point in the same direction, but they answer slightly different questions. A controlled color-perception experiment tells us whether cattle can tell wavelengths apart. A livestock-handling guide describes how cattle respond to threats, noise and movement. An institutional explanation addresses the bullfighting myth. An older banner experiment provides historical corroboration. None of these, by itself, is a modern trial that presents mature fighting bulls with identical moving capes in different colors.

Phillips and Lomas, Journal of Dairy Science, 2001 Calves in calibrated light and behavior tests Calves distinguished long wavelengths from short and medium wavelengths, with mean correct choices of 82% and 89%. Calves were tested under controlled lights, not mature fighting bulls and a waving cape.
Mississippi State University Extension, 2022 General cattle handling Cattle may fight when agitated, can be startled by quick movements or loud noises, and are more likely to flee than fight in most situations. This is a handling guide, not a bullfighting experiment.
University of Navarra Science Museum Explanation of fighting bulls and the arena myth Fighting bulls are described as dichromatic, with red appearing muted; movement is identified as the trigger for a charge. An institutional explanation, not a controlled trial isolating cape color.
Earle E. Emme, “Color Experiment with Cattle,” 1942 Cattle exposed to colored banners Red, green and black banners attracted equal attention; white attracted more. The abstract says red did not excite cattle more than the other colors. Only the historical abstract is available here, so detailed methods cannot be assessed.

Taken together, these findings do not support red as a uniquely aggressive stimulus. They support a narrower and more defensible conclusion: color may be detectable, but the color red itself has not been established as the cause of a bull’s charge.

How cattle vision differs from human vision

Cattle are not simply “blind to red”

Cattle vision is unlike human vision, but it is not an on-off system in which red is invisible. In the Phillips and Lomas study, researchers calibrated short-, medium- and long-wavelength light sources so that differences in brightness would not explain the animals’ choices. The calves then learned to discriminate long wavelengths from shorter ones.

Across the relevant tests, the calves made the correct choice on average 82% of the time when distinguishing long-wavelength light from short-wavelength light, and 89% of the time when distinguishing long wavelengths from medium wavelengths. Long wavelengths include light in the red portion of the spectrum, although an animal’s perception is not equivalent to a human seeing a vivid scarlet object.

Only three of the seven calves showed limited early discrimination between short and medium wavelengths. Their later choices in that comparison became random. That result illustrates the limits of cattle color vision without implying that every color distinction disappears. The study measured discrimination under a specific experimental design; it did not measure anger, charging or the emotional meaning of a red cape.

“Dichromatic” describes the visual system, not an aggression switch

The University of Navarra Science Museum describes fighting bulls as dichromatic animals that mainly distinguish bluish and yellowish tones and perceive red as muted. Dichromatic vision means that the animal has two principal color-sensing channels rather than the three used by typical human color vision. It does not mean the animal fails to detect all light in the red range, nor does it show that red produces fear or rage.

Mississippi State University Extension describes cattle as having panoramic color vision, poor depth perception and difficulty focusing quickly. It also notes that harsh light-dark contrasts can make cattle balk. These visual characteristics help explain why an animal may react strongly to an approaching, moving object without the object’s hue being the decisive feature.

Why movement is a more plausible trigger than hue

A moving target demands attention

A cape in an arena is not a stationary color sample. It is waved, pulled away, brought close, and used to direct the bull’s path. Movement creates a changing target and can interact with the animal’s limited depth perception and difficulty focusing quickly. The University of Navarra explanation identifies movement as what triggers the charge, which fits the broader handling evidence better than a special reaction to red.

The same logic applies to ordinary cattle. Mississippi State’s guide says cattle can be spooked by quick movements or loud noises. When animals perceive a threat, their response is shaped by distance, escape routes, agitation and the behavior of people around them. Color is only one possible visual feature in that larger situation.

Fight-or-flight is not the same as “seeing red”

Cattle are more likely to flee than fight in most circumstances, according to Mississippi State Extension. They may fight when agitated, cornered by circumstances or otherwise unable to resolve a perceived threat through flight. A charge therefore reflects a context-dependent response, not a universal reflex caused by one wavelength.

This distinction also prevents a common reasoning error. Seeing a bull charge after a red cape appears does not prove that red caused the charge. The cape is moving, the bull is already in a highly stimulating environment, and the handler is deliberately provoking and redirecting the animal. To identify color as the cause, an experiment would need to hold those other factors constant and vary only the cape’s hue.

What the bullfighting scene does—and does not—demonstrate

Fighting bulls are a specialized population

Fighting bulls and domestic cattle belong to the same species, Bos taurus. The University of Navarra Science Museum notes that fighting bulls have been selectively bred for endurance, physical strength and behavioral traits. Their arena behavior therefore occurs in a specialized setting with animals selected for particular physical and behavioral characteristics.

That background makes it inappropriate to treat a calf color test as a direct measurement of an adult fighting bull’s response. It also makes it inappropriate to assume that a general cattle-handling observation precisely predicts every arena charge. The studies and explanations are complementary, but they are not interchangeable.

The cape’s color is part of the spectacle, not established causation

The traditional red muleta is visually prominent to human spectators, and the color may help conceal blood late in a fight. Those cultural and practical associations do not establish a biological effect on the bull. The animal reacts to the complete sequence: movement, proximity, noise, handling, provocation and the available path of escape.

Because the cape is always moving in the familiar example, observers naturally associate the movement and the red fabric. A fair test would require identical movements with different colors and enough animals to separate color from individual temperament and training. The evidence summarized here does not provide that mature-bull comparison.

What the color studies found

The 2001 calf experiment

Phillips and Lomas first calibrated light sources of short, medium and long wavelengths for equal perceived brightness. This step matters because a brighter light can attract attention even when color is irrelevant. The calves then performed discrimination tasks and were observed under selected stimuli.

The 82% and 89% mean correct-choice figures show that the calves could distinguish long wavelengths from the shorter and medium wavelengths used in the experiment. They do not show that long-wavelength light caused aggression. In the behavior portion, responses varied by stimulus and wavelength rather than producing a single “red makes cattle attack” pattern.

A separate fear-test measure illustrates why context matters. Calves reached a hiding place in 58 seconds under medium-wavelength light and 95 seconds under short-wavelength light. Those times describe that test’s movement to a hiding place; they are not measurements of bull aggression, charging probability or a red-cape effect.

The 1942 banner report

Earle E. Emme’s “Color Experiment with Cattle,” published in the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science in 1942, reported that red, green and black banners attracted equal attention, while white attracted more. Its abstract states that the red banner “did not excite the cattle to any greater degree” than the other banners and excited them less than the white one.

This older result points in the same general direction as the modern explanation, but it should be treated as supporting historical context. The available record is an abstract, so it does not establish the experiment’s full methods, sample details or how closely its setup resembled an arena.

Common claims, corrected

Claim: “Bulls hate red.”

There is no good basis for describing red as a uniquely hated or angering color. The available evidence does not establish a special attack trigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Claim: “Bulls cannot see red.”

That wording is too absolute. Cattle have limited, dichromatic color vision, and the calf experiment found discrimination involving long wavelengths. Red may look muted or unlike human red, but detection and emotional response are different questions.

Claim: “The cape proves red causes the charge.”

The cape demonstrates that a bull can be induced to charge in an arena. It does not isolate color from movement, proximity, provocation, noise, training and the animal’s state. The movement is the better-supported explanation.

Claim: “If red is irrelevant, any color is safe around cattle.”

That conclusion also goes too far. An animal can react to movement, loud noise, contrast, distance or agitation regardless of fabric color. The absence of a special red trigger does not make approaching or provoking cattle safe.

What this means for people near cattle

The practical lesson is to manage the whole stimulus, not to focus on wardrobe color. Mississippi State Extension’s guidance emphasizes that cattle may startle at quick movements or loud noises and may fight when agitated. Their usual response is flight, but a person should not assume that an animal will always choose escape.

  • Do not test the myth by waving red, bright or contrasting objects at cattle.
  • Keep movements controlled and avoid unnecessary loud sounds around animals.
  • Remember that cattle have poor depth perception and may struggle to focus quickly, so sudden changes in distance can be especially startling.
  • Treat an agitated animal as unpredictable regardless of its color vision.
  • Follow trained handlers’ instructions in farms, livestock facilities and events involving cattle.

These precautions address the factors that the handling evidence actually identifies. They are not a claim that one particular color is harmless or dangerous in every setting.

How certain is the answer?

The confidence level is high for rejecting the simple myth and lower for making a precise claim about every mature fighting bull. The modern controlled study directly measured calves’ color discrimination and selected behavioral responses. The handling guide describes cattle responses to threats in practical settings. The museum explanation connects those principles to the bullfighting tradition. The historical banner report adds older corroboration.

What remains unestablished is a definitive, modern, arena-specific experiment in which mature fighting bulls encounter the same moving cape in multiple colors under otherwise identical conditions. A careful answer therefore avoids both extremes: red is not supported as the cause of attack, but the available evidence does not justify pretending that every detail of bullfighting behavior has been experimentally isolated.
