If your cat bites your ankles as you walk by, the behavior is often play-related stalking: moving feet can trigger a chase and pounce. That clue is useful, but it does not prove the cause. Notice when and where it happens, what your cat does just before the lunge, and whether the behavior is new. Then reduce predictable ambushes, offer an appropriate toy to chase, and stop play calmly when it gets rough.
Why does my cat bite my ankles?
Some cats stalk and pounce on a person as they pass, especially when play or other chances to chase and pounce are limited. Cornell describes this as play aggression; Cats Protection also notes that cats may grab ankles. The behavior alone cannot tell you exactly why your cat is doing it, so look for a pattern and consider whether anything has changed.

For several days, note the time and location of each incident, what happened immediately beforehand, and whether your cat hid or waited nearby before launching. A repeatable hiding spot or time of day can help you decide what to change. Cornell’s guidance on feline aggression recommends identifying patterns and addressing places that encourage ambushes.
How can I stop the attacks?
Prevent the predictable ambush
If your cat repeatedly launches from the same hiding place, temporarily block access to it where practical. If attacks tend to happen at a predictable time, start a play session before that moment rather than waiting for the lunge. These steps change the setup that precedes the behavior.

Redirect the chase to a toy
Use an interactive wand toy or another suitable toy to invite your cat to stalk, chase, and pounce. Keep the toy far enough from your hands and body that your cat can target the toy rather than your fingers. A wand toy is an optional way to direct play, not a guaranteed fix. UC Davis advises daily play and a positive alternative to rough play; Merck Veterinary Manual also discusses play-related behavior in cats.
End rough play without punishment
Do not use hands or feet as toys, including wiggling toes under a blanket. If play turns rough, stop interacting and move away. Ask everyone in the household to respond consistently. Avoid shouting, hitting, tapping, or scruffing: physical punishment can frighten a cat or be taken as part of the game, rather than teaching the behavior you want.

Can enrichment help?
For an indoor cat, a food puzzle can add a foraging challenge at mealtime. Cats Protection describes puzzle feeders as an enrichment option, but that does not establish them as a direct or standalone treatment for ankle biting. A homemade food puzzle may be an alternative, so buying a feeder is optional.

Ask a veterinarian for advice if ankle biting starts suddenly in an adult cat, is becoming more frequent or persistent, seems connected to pain or another health change, or causes significant injury. Cornell recommends ruling out medical causes before behavioral management. If no medical cause is found and the behavior remains hard to manage, ask your veterinarian about a qualified feline behavior professional.
