Cats may chew cardboard as they explore or as a repeated oral behavior, but there is no single cause that explains it in every cat. The key distinction is whether your cat mouths or tears the cardboard and spits it out, or regularly swallows pieces: chewing alone does not establish pica, while persistent consumption of non-food material does.

Chewing cardboard is not the same as eating it

Some cats bite, shred, or mouth cardboard without swallowing it. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine defines pica as persistent chewing and consumption of non-nutritional substances; not every cat that chews an object actually eats it. Occasional chewing by itself is therefore not enough to conclude that a cat has pica.

Pay attention to what happens to the pieces. If your cat repeatedly swallows cardboard or other non-food items, tell your veterinarian. Do not diagnose pica—or assume a dietary deficiency—from chewing behavior alone.

Why might a cat chew cardboard?

Exploration, especially in kittens

Kittens commonly chew as they explore their surroundings. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance says most outgrow this behavior, although some cats continue it throughout life.

A repeated oral behavior

Cardboard is among the materials reported in descriptions of oral repetitive behavior in cats. Veterinary guidance identifies multiple possible causes and advises ruling out medical disease, including gastrointestinal disease, rather than assuming a behavioral or nutritional explanation.

There is no established cardboard-specific explanation

The available veterinary guidance supports several possible explanations, not one definitive cause for every cat. A case-control study record lists paper or cardboard among reported pica targets, but that ordering is not a measure of how common cardboard chewing is in cats. The reviewed sources provide no reliable prevalence figure.

When to contact a veterinarian

  • Your cat persistently chews or swallows cardboard or other non-food items.
  • The behavior is new, increasing, or worrying to you.
  • You suspect your cat has swallowed a harmful amount, or your cat seems unwell.

A veterinarian can assess your cat and consider possible medical causes. The available guidance does not set a cardboard-specific emergency threshold; if you suspect harmful ingestion or notice signs of illness, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than trying to determine the cause yourself.

What you can do at home

Track the behavior

Note what your cat chews, whether pieces appear to be swallowed, how often it happens, and when or where it occurs. Careful notes about frequency, duration, and timing can help a veterinarian assess unusual eating habits.

Manage access

If your cat eats cardboard, limit access to it and remove other chewable items that could be unsafe. Supervise your cat around potential targets, and ask your veterinarian for help if the behavior continues.

Offer appropriate activity

Environmental enrichment, interactive toys, and puzzle feeders can provide play and feeding activity. These may be useful parts of management, but they are not a substitute for veterinary assessment when a cat persistently consumes non-food material, and no toy can be promised to stop the behavior.
