Cats may choose high places to watch their surroundings, feel protected, climb and explore, get space from household activity or other pets, or rest somewhere warm. These are possible motivations, not a checklist that explains every cat: preferences vary, and some cats feel safer in low hiding places.
Why a high perch can appeal to a cat
A better view of the surroundings
A raised perch gives a cat a vantage point for watching people, other animals and activity around the home. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes vertical spaces as places where cats can survey their environment while remaining protected. A high spot may also let a cat observe potential prey, as PetMD explains.

A sense of safety and control
Cats can be both predators and prey. From a protected location, a cat may be able to see what is happening while remaining out of reach of perceived threats. Merck notes that safe locations at different elevations can help cats feel secure and reduce stress.

Climbing and exploring
Getting up high can be rewarding in itself, not just a way to find a place to nap. The Humane Society of the United States’ 2025 Guide to Cat Behavior Counseling puts it plainly: “Climbing itself is an enjoyable activity.”

Space from noise, activity or other pets
A raised resting place can let a cat get some distance from children, guests, dogs or household commotion. In a home with multiple cats, having vertical spaces can also provide more places to rest and retreat, giving cats options to avoid one another. A cat choosing a high perch does not, by itself, mean that the cat is in conflict or feels unsafe.
Sometimes, a warmer place to rest
Warmth may also play a part when a cat selects a spot such as the top of an appliance. PetMD identifies warmth as a possible explanation, but the available guidance does not establish how often it drives the choice. Treat it as a situational possibility rather than a general explanation for every cat.

Not every cat prefers heights
Individual preferences differ. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 feline life-stage guidance notes that some cats prefer high places while others retreat to low spaces. A cat that favors a covered bed, ground-level hideaway or other low spot is not abnormal simply for preferring it.

Seeking a high place is not, on its own, evidence of illness or stress. PetMD notes that a cat experiencing stress or illness might seek high spots more often to feel safe. If your cat’s behavior changes noticeably or you see other signs of distress or illness, contact a veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the cause from the perch alone.

How to offer a safe place to climb
Give your cat an elevated option that is stable, accessible and appropriate for its size and mobility. Possibilities include a cat tree, securely mounted shelves, a cleared and safe shelf or cabinet, or a properly attached window perch. Check that furniture can support your cat and that any wall-mounted or window-mounted item is firmly secured so it cannot fall.
For an older cat or one with limited mobility, PetMD suggests placing cat stairs near a favorite elevated spot. Consider how easily your cat can get up and down, not just whether the perch is high enough.

When choosing among options, compare the features that affect safety and fit:
- Stability and attachment: Check that freestanding furniture does not wobble and mounted products are secured properly.
- Size and weight capacity: Make sure the perch is large enough for your cat and can support its weight.
- Access: Consider whether the route up and down is manageable for your cat’s age and mobility.
- Available space: Account for the floor or wall space the structure will occupy.
Make vertical space work in a multi-cat home
Provide several elevated resting places rather than making one perch the only appealing option. Merck advises placing multiple core resources in separate locations to reduce competition or confrontation; separate perches give cats more choice about where to rest and how much distance to keep from one another.
