When a cat meows while rubbing against people or objects, it may be greeting you, asking for something, communicating through scent, responding to stress, or—if unspayed—showing signs of heat. These behaviors are often normal, but a sudden change, persistent or compulsive rubbing, irritated skin, or other signs of discomfort call for veterinary advice.
What the combination of meowing and rubbing can mean
Meowing is a way cats communicate, while rubbing often serves social contact or scent communication. The two behaviors happening together do not point to one diagnosis. Look at when and where they occur, whether your cat is spayed, and whether the behavior is new or accompanied by physical changes.

Six possible reasons
1. Greeting and social contact
A cat may rub against you after you have been away as a form of social contact. Cats may also vocalize during a greeting. The American Association of Feline Practitioners discusses caregiver-directed rubbing in the context of reunion and attention in its environmental needs guidance.

Your cat may meow to request food, play, attention, or access to a room or outdoor area. Notice the setting and what happens just before and after the vocalizing. A pattern—such as meowing near the food area or by a closed door—can help you understand what your cat is communicating. PetMD’s guide to frequent meowing describes these kinds of communication and the importance of investigating a sudden increase.

3. Scent communication or marking
Facial rubbing can leave scent from glands on a cat’s face. Rubbing against furniture or people may therefore be normal scent communication, not a sign of illness by itself. Scratching can also deposit scent: Cornell’s house-soiling guidance explains that cats may deposit scent through facial rubbing and scratching, and VCA notes that cats may mark by rubbing their faces along surfaces in its marking and spraying resource.
4. Heat in an unspayed female
An unspayed female may vocalize and rub while in heat; rolling may also occur. Reproductive status can make this explanation more plausible, but rubbing and meowing alone do not establish that a cat is in heat. If you are unsure what you are seeing, ask your veterinarian.

5. Stress or a change at home
A household change or stressful conditions may contribute to marking behavior. Consider whether the behavior began after a change in the home or routine, and provide appropriate outlets for normal activity. VCA discusses stress and environmental enrichment in its marking and spraying guidance. Do not punish scent marking; punishment does not address what may be driving it.

6. A medical or skin problem
Excessive meowing can accompany illness or distress, while persistent rubbing or irritated skin needs assessment. Neither behavior alone identifies a medical cause. Contact a veterinarian if the behavior changes suddenly, persists, seems compulsive, or occurs with skin changes or other signs of discomfort. PetMD’s meowing guidance and the veterinarian-reviewed PangoVet overview discuss when a veterinary check is appropriate.

How to narrow down what is happening
- Check reproductive status: If your cat is an unspayed female, heat is one possibility to consider, not a conclusion based on rubbing alone.
- Notice the setting: Meowing near food, a door, or a play area may point to a request; rubbing when you return may be social contact.
- Look for a change: A new or persistent pattern deserves more attention than familiar behavior that occurs in a consistent context.
- Check for physical signs: Irritated skin, other symptoms, or apparent discomfort make veterinary advice important.
What you can do safely
- Observe and note the pattern. Record when and where the behavior occurs, what precedes it, and whether anything recently changed at home.
- Offer appropriate outlets. Provide normal enrichment and a suitable scratching surface. Cornell’s scratching guidance describes a scratching post as an outlet for a cat’s need to scratch.
- Avoid punishment. If rubbing or scratching is marking, punishment will not identify or resolve the underlying context.
- Contact your veterinarian when warranted. Seek advice for sudden or persistent changes, compulsive rubbing, irritated skin, other symptoms, or behavior that concerns you.
A scratching post can provide an appropriate place to scratch; it is not a treatment for excessive vocalizing, a medical condition, stress, or heat behavior.
