Cornell’s Feline Health Center says cats typically spend 30–50% of their day grooming. What matters most is whether your cat’s habits have changed or grooming is causing hair loss, irritated skin, lesions, or excessive hairballs.
Why do cats groom so often?
Grooming is a normal part of feline behavior. Cats lick their coats to clean themselves, and the time they devote to it can look surprising: Cornell’s Feline Health Center attributes the estimate of 30–50% of a cat’s day to Pamela Perry, D.V.M. That figure is a typical estimate, not a threshold for diagnosing a problem.

Instead of counting minutes, watch for changes and consequences. A cat that grooms frequently without damaging its coat or skin may simply be following its usual routine.
When does grooming become a concern?
Pay attention if grooming is new, noticeably more intense, focused on one area, or leaving physical changes. Cornell identifies excessive hairballs and hair loss as abnormal; other warning signs include bald patches, lesions, and red or raw skin.

- Hair or coat changes: thinning fur, bald spots, or hair coming away from repeatedly licked areas.
- Skin damage: redness, a rash, raw patches, or sores. Licking that abrades skin can contribute to infection.
- Excessive hairballs: especially when this is a change from your cat’s normal pattern.
- A changed grooming pattern: persistent licking of one place or grooming that seems to interfere with ordinary activity.
There is no universal number of minutes or licking episodes that defines overgrooming in the sources cited here. A strong focus on one body area can be a clue, but it does not identify the cause: for example, licking near the tail head can be associated with fleas, while pain may also lead a cat to concentrate on the affected area.
What can cause a cat to lick more than usual?
Unusually frequent licking can be a response to itch or pain. Potential medical causes include parasites, allergies, infections, and other skin conditions. Pain can prompt focused licking over an affected area; itchy conditions may lead to more widespread licking. The possibilities overlap, so the grooming pattern alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Stress and changes at home
Stress may also contribute to excessive grooming. Cornell identifies a move, a new or lost household pet, and a change in routine as possible stressors. But stress should not be the first assumption: veterinary sources advise assessing medical causes before diagnosing compulsive or stress-related grooming.

What should you do if your cat is overgrooming?
Arrange a veterinary assessment for physical changes
If you notice hair loss, skin damage, sores, or a clear change in grooming, contact your veterinarian. A basic check for fleas, lice, and mats may be useful, but it cannot rule out other causes. Avoid treating the behavior as purely psychological before medical problems have been assessed.

Consider stress-reduction steps after medical causes are addressed
If a veterinarian has ruled out medical explanations and stress seems relevant, gradual changes may help. Cornell suggests keeping familiar bedding available during a move, providing safe elevated spaces, and making time for daily play. A veterinarian may consider anti-anxiety medication in serious cases; medication should be directed by the veterinarian.
Keep routine coat care gentle
Gentle brushing or combing can help maintain a coat, but it does not treat the itch, pain, or behavioral cause of excessive licking. Avoid pulling hard on tangles, and ask a veterinarian about a mat that has irritated the skin.
