A cat’s long tail is a flexible control surface and a visual communication tool. It can make small corrections while the cat moves, and its position or motion adds information to a cat’s posture. Tail length itself varies naturally: some cats inherit short-tail or tailless phenotypes, while the evolutionary reason many domestic cats have long tails is not settled by current evidence.
The most direct balance evidence comes from a small 1998 experiment in which cats moved their tails opposite a sudden sideways movement of a narrow beam. Cats whose tail motor control had been interrupted fell more often during that challenge. That supports a role in difficult balancing tasks, not a claim that every cat needs a long tail for ordinary movement.

What a long tail does for a cat
It helps control the body during movement
When a cat walks along a narrow surface, jumps, lands or changes direction, its body’s mass is moving through space. A mobile tail can shift mass and create a counter-rotation, helping the cat make quick adjustments without moving its entire trunk. This is a control function, not a rigid “balancing pole”: the tail is a muscular, articulated part of the spine that can be positioned continuously.

The clearest experimental test was published by Walker, Vierck and Ritz in Behavioural Brain Research in March 1998. Four cats crossed a narrow beam while researchers introduced a sudden sideways displacement. The cats rapidly moved their tails in the opposite direction to the beam’s motion. In trials where tail motor control was interrupted, the cats fell more often. You can read the study record in PubMed.

That result demonstrates a contribution to balance under a demanding, sudden perturbation. It does not measure every type of locomotion, establish that longer tails always produce better agility, or show that a cat cannot walk, jump or climb with a short tail. The sample was only four cats, so it is direct physiological evidence of a function rather than a population statistic.
It is useful, but not indispensable for every task
Cats with short tails can move effectively because balance is distributed across several systems: the inner ear, vision, paws, joints, trunk muscles and spinal reflexes all contribute. A tail gives the nervous system another way to adjust angular momentum, especially when the body is rotating or the foothold is unstable. The practical implication is narrower than the popular claim that “cats use their tails for balance” suggests: a tail can improve control in particular situations, but tail length alone does not determine athletic ability.
How a cat’s tail communicates
Posture carries social information
Tail movement is also part of feline body language. An upright tail is commonly associated with a relaxed or friendly approach, particularly when the rest of the body is loose and the cat is choosing to come closer. A tail held low, tucked, puffed or moving sharply can occur in very different emotional states, so the position is a clue rather than a guaranteed translation.
Rapid swishing is often associated with agitation or concentrated attention. A cat watching prey, listening to an unfamiliar sound or deciding whether to retreat may move its tail for reasons that are not identical to anger. Veterinary writer Jennifer Coates describes tail positions and movement as signals whose meaning depends on the surrounding behavior in PetMD’s May 5, 2025 overview. The Library of Congress likewise explains that cats communicate through combinations of visual, vocal and scent signals; its discussion is available at How do cats communicate with each other?.

Read the whole cat, not the tail in isolation
Before assigning a meaning, check the ears, eyes, facial tension, back, legs, whiskers, vocalizations and what has just happened. A slowly moving tail on a relaxed cat watching a bird is different from a rapidly lashing tail while another animal approaches. Context also includes whether the cat is playing, being touched, eating, cornered or trying to sleep.
- Upright and loosely curved: often compatible with a social, comfortable approach when the body is relaxed.
- Fast lashing or thumping: can signal arousal, irritation or intense focus; pause handling and look for the trigger.
- Puffed or held very rigidly: indicates heightened arousal, but the cause may be fear, defensive behavior or excitement.
- Tucked or tightly wrapped: can accompany uncertainty or a desire to avoid interaction.
These are observational patterns, not a fixed code. The same movement can change meaning with the cat’s posture and circumstances, and an individual cat may have its own habits.
Why some cats have short tails or no visible tail
Inherited variation changes tail length
Domestic cats do not all inherit the same tail structure. A 2013 study in Genetics identified multiple mutations in the T (Brachyury) gene among Manx cats with short-tail phenotypes. The paper also discusses abnormal tail-length phenotypes in five breeds: American Bobtail, Manx, Pixie-Bob, Kurilian Bobtail and Japanese Bobtail. Its PubMed record is available at Multiple mutant T alleles cause haploinsufficiency of Brachyury and short tails in Manx cats.

It means that short tails in the studied Manx lineages are not necessarily produced by one universal change, and it does not establish that every short-tailed cat—especially a mixed-breed cat—has the same genetic cause. A bobtail appearance can be inherited, but tail length cannot be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Short does not automatically mean unhealthy
A naturally short tail is a phenotype, not a medical diagnosis. The 2013 genetics study addresses the inheritance of tail length; it does not say that every cat with a short tail has a disease. Conversely, a normal-looking tail does not prove that a particular cat is free of health problems. For an individual animal, overall movement, comfort and veterinary examination are more informative than tail length by itself.
What is known—and not known—about evolution
It is tempting to offer one neat explanation: long tails evolved solely to improve balance. The available evidence does not justify that certainty. The balance experiment tests what a tail can do; it does not reconstruct the evolutionary history of domestic cats. The genetics study specifically notes that the mechanisms behind tail-length variation are not fully known.
Several processes could have shaped the modern range of tails, including inherited variation, natural selection, population history and human selection during domestication. Those possibilities are not interchangeable, and the sources reviewed do not establish a single pathway or a universal advantage for a particular length. The defensible conclusion is functional and limited: a mobile tail can aid control during movement, while the historical reason long tails became common remains an open question.

Welfare questions around tailless and short-tailed breeding
Tail appearance can be selected for aesthetic reasons, but a visible trait may be linked to other anatomy. The UK Animal Welfare Committee’s 2024 opinion on feline breeding practices warns that selecting for traits including taillessness has predisposed some cats to inherited anatomical conditions with welfare implications. The government publication is at Opinion on the welfare implications of current and emergent feline breeding practices.

This is a population-level breeding concern, not a diagnosis of every bobtail or Manx cat. Welfare risk depends on the phenotype and on linked conditions in a particular line. Responsible interpretation therefore separates two statements: short tails can arise through normal inherited variation, and some breeding practices that prioritize extreme or tailless forms can increase the chance of harmful associated anatomy.
If you are assessing a specific cat, do not infer its health from a photograph or tail length. A veterinarian can evaluate the animal’s movement, comfort and anatomy, especially if there is a change in function or an obvious problem.

Different claims about tails rest on different kinds of evidence. Keeping those categories separate prevents an appealing explanation from becoming an overstated fact.
| Question | Evidence available | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Does the tail contribute to balance? | A 1998 experiment with four cats on a laterally displaced beam; tail movement was opposite the displacement, and interrupted tail control led to more falls. | A direct contribution during a demanding balance challenge; not a universal measure of agility or a requirement for every movement. |
| What do tail positions mean? | Veterinary and educational descriptions of feline body language from PetMD and the Library of Congress. | Tail posture is a useful social signal interpreted with the rest of the body and the situation, not a fixed one-position dictionary. |
| Why do some cats have short tails? | A 2013 genetics study found multiple T/Brachyury mutations in studied Manx lineages and listed five breeds with abnormal tail-length phenotypes. | Some short tails have an inherited basis; it does not explain every short tail or the origin of long tails. |
| Why are long tails common in domestic cats? | The reviewed sources do not establish one definitive evolutionary mechanism. | Keep evolutionary explanations qualified rather than presenting a single “just-so” story as settled science. |
Common questions about a cat’s tail
Does a longer tail make a cat more athletic?
Not necessarily. A tail can help with rapid adjustments, but athletic performance also depends on the inner ear, vision, muscles, joints, paws, coordination, body shape and experience. The four-cat balance experiment did not compare cats of different tail lengths.

Can a cat with no tail balance?
Yes. Cats without full-length tails can still use other sensory and muscular systems to control posture. The experiment shows that tail control contributes under one challenge; it does not show that a tail is required for all balance.
Why does my cat’s tail twitch when I touch it?
Twitching can reflect arousal, attention or irritation. Stop and assess the cat’s ears, posture, facial expression and whether it is trying to move away. Tail motion alone cannot identify a single emotion.
Is every short-tailed cat a Manx?
No. The genetics study discusses Manx mutations and lists several breeds with abnormal tail-length phenotypes, but mixed-breed cats can also inherit short tails. Appearance alone cannot identify a breed or a particular mutation.
Should a short tail worry me?
Not automatically. Some short tails are inherited, while welfare concerns arise when particular breeding choices increase the risk of linked anatomical conditions. If a cat has pain, impaired movement or a new change in tail function, seek veterinary assessment rather than judging health from shape.
