Cats rub their faces on people and objects to spread scent, and the gesture can also be part of greeting, social familiarity, seeking attention, or comfort. Its meaning depends on the cat and the situation; it is not proof of affection or a diagnostic checklist. PetMD and Vetstreet describe the behavior as ordinary feline communication.
Why cats headbutt people
These reasons can overlap. Look at the cat’s body language and what happens before and after the bump rather than assigning it one fixed meaning.

1. Scent communication and familiar surroundings
Cats have scent glands around the face. Rubbing their cheeks or forehead against a person or object leaves facial scent behind. This can help make a familiar environment feel more recognizable, but it is too simplistic to call every bunt a territorial claim. Veterinary behaviorist Meghan E. Herron cautions against reducing face rubbing to “claiming” territory; she told Vetstreet, “Cats do this to deposit facial pheromones on people or objects in their environment.” PetMD, Vetstreet, and the FECAVA feline behavior review discuss scent-based communication.
2. Social familiarity and connection
Cats may rub against familiar people or other animals as part of social communication. If your cat approaches with a loose, relaxed posture, the contact may reflect comfort and familiarity. Still, a bunt alone cannot prove that a cat feels affectionate or wants to be petted; context matters. PetMD and Vet Help Direct describe rubbing as one way cats communicate socially.

3. Comfort or self-soothing
Face rubbing does not always involve a person. PetMD notes that cats may rub against objects as a possible way to self-soothe or regulate their emotional state. That is one plausible interpretation, not a diagnosis or a guaranteed explanation for a particular cat’s behavior. PetMD discusses this possibility.
4. Greeting, investigation, or a request for attention
A cat may bump you to greet you, investigate you, or invite scratches. If a bump reliably earns attention, the cat may learn to repeat it. An unfamiliar cat may also be checking you out rather than signaling an established bond. Let the cat approach and watch its body language before reaching to pet it. PetMD covers these possibilities.

How to tell ordinary bunting from head pressing
Normal bunting is typically a brief rub or bump, often in a relaxed interaction. Head pressing is different: the cat sustains pressure against a wall, corner, or another object and may not appear relaxed. It can occur with other concerning signs, including pacing, changes in vision, circling, wobbliness, or unusual vocalization. This behavior needs prompt veterinary attention. Do not try to diagnose its cause at home; contact a veterinarian promptly if you see sustained pressing, especially alongside other unusual signs. PetMD and Vet Help Direct distinguish head pressing from ordinary rubbing.

How to respond when your cat bumps you
- If your cat seems relaxed: stay calm and let it initiate contact. Gentle head scratches or strokes are a more predictable response than bumping your head against the cat.
- If the cat is unfamiliar: move slowly. PetMD suggests offering a hand to sniff and checking the cat’s body language before trying gentle petting.
- If your cat does not bunt: that alone is not necessarily a problem; cats vary in how they communicate.
- If the behavior changes suddenly: contact your veterinarian if a new or changed pattern comes with lethargy, irritability, signs of pain, or other illness signs. PetMD, Vet Help Direct, and Vetstreet discuss how context and changes in behavior matter.
There is no established numerical estimate here for how often cats bunt or which motive is most common. The useful distinction is what the behavior looks like, whether the cat appears comfortable, and whether it is new or accompanied by signs of illness.
