Cats may roll on concrete to rub against a surface, leave scent, scratch an itch, or respond to a particular sensory cue. A veterinarian-reviewed article suggests seven possibilities, but they are not seven medically confirmed causes: the strongest veterinary support is for scent marking and normal scratching behavior. Rolling alone does not tell you whether a cat is ill or in heat.
Why might a cat roll on concrete?
Concrete rolling can have more than one motivation, and the surface by itself cannot reveal which one applies. Cats use rubbing and scratching as part of normal behavior. Merck Veterinary Manual explains that cats may mark by scratching or by rubbing scent glands on their cheeks or bodies against the environment; Cornell Feline Health Center notes that scratching deposits scent from paw glands as well as leaving visible marks. These sources support scent marking as a credible possibility, not a definite explanation for an individual cat rolling on concrete.

A veterinarian-reviewed Catster article proposes seven reasons. Treat them as possibilities rather than a diagnostic checklist: the veterinary references cited here do not establish every concrete-specific explanation.
1. Scent marking
Rubbing may leave a cat’s scent on a surface. Merck describes rubbing and scratching as ways cats can mark their surroundings. That makes scent marking plausible when a cat rolls against concrete, but you cannot determine intent from the behavior alone.

2. Rubbing an itch or enjoying the texture
A cat may rub against a surface because it feels satisfying or reaches a spot it cannot easily scratch. The concrete-specific article suggests this possibility, but rubbing is not a demonstrated treatment for itch. If it becomes frequent or intense, look for accompanying changes such as hair loss or overgrooming.
3. Cooling off
The Catster article suggests a cat might choose shaded concrete to cool down. This is a proposed explanation, not a confirmed effect of concrete rolling. In hot weather, make sure your cat can reach shade and fresh water rather than assuming the surface is keeping it safely cool.

Sun-warmed concrete might appeal to a cat seeking warmth. This is also a suggested explanation, not one independently established by the veterinary references cited here.

Catnip can prompt rolling in cats that respond to it, so it may be relevant if catnip is nearby or has been placed on the surface. A Merck Veterinary Manual reference says approximately 50–60% of cats respond to catnip. Rolling on concrete alone does not show that catnip is involved.

6. Being in heat
Heat is one possibility raised by the Catster article, but rolling on concrete is not a reliable sign of estrus on its own. Merck describes vocalization as one receptive behavior and says queens generally cycle approximately every three weeks seasonally if they are not bred. Consider the broader pattern rather than inferring reproductive status from rolling.
7. Coat care
The article suggests that rubbing could dislodge loose fur or plant material. That possibility is not established by the veterinary sources cited here; concrete rolling should not be treated as proven coat care or as a way to remove parasites.

When is concrete rolling a reason to call a veterinarian?
Occasional rubbing without other changes is not inherently alarming. Contact a veterinarian if rubbing becomes sudden, excessive, or aggressive, especially alongside skin or behavior changes. Useful signs to mention include:
- Overgrooming or hair loss
- Increased vocalization
- Head tilt or unusual eye movements
- Confusion or other changes in behavior
These signs do not identify a cause on their own, but they make a veterinary evaluation more appropriate than assuming the behavior is ordinary surface rubbing. PetMD also advises attention to excessive rubbing when it occurs with other signs.

Should you offer an indoor alternative?
If your cat also scratches or seeks rough horizontal surfaces, you can try a stable horizontal scratching pad or board. Merck recommends matching scratching surfaces to a cat’s preferred material, shape, and size; Cornell likewise advises observing the cat’s material and orientation preferences. An alternative is optional: these sources do not show that a scratcher is necessary for concrete rolling or that it will stop the behavior.
What the seven-reason list can—and cannot—tell you
The seven possibilities come from Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article, updated September 15, 2026 and reviewed by Dr. Marta Vidal-Abarca, BVSc GPCert Ophthal MRCVS. The stronger independent veterinary support concerns general scent-marking and scratching behavior. The cited references do not establish the full list as proven causes of rolling on concrete, so use your cat’s overall behavior and health—not the surface alone—to judge whether anything needs attention.
