Cats knead by pressing their paws into a soft surface, often in an alternating rhythm. The motion starts in kittenhood, when kneading helps stimulate milk flow while nursing. Adults often keep doing it, but no single explanation for why they knead is proven: comfort, scent-marking, and settling a resting spot are all proposed reasons.
What kneading looks like
Kneading is the repeated pressing of a cat’s paws into a soft surface. Some cats alternate their paws; others use both at once. The dough-like motion is commonly called “making biscuits.”
Why cats knead
A behavior that begins while nursing
Kittens press their paws against their mother while nursing, which helps stimulate milk production. Many cats retain the motion as adults. One common theory is that kneading brings back the comfort associated with nursing, but that explanation is plausible rather than established for every cat. PetMD and VCA Animal Hospitals describe this connection.
Scent-marking and settling in
Cats have scent glands around their paws, so kneading may leave scent on a person or surface. Another theory is that cats knead a soft spot before resting. These explanations can coexist, and the motion alone cannot tell you which one applies to your cat. As veterinarian Susan Nelson told Scientific American, “Some of these are just theories because we don’t know.”

Is kneading normal?
Kneading is generally normal behavior. By itself, it does not prove that a cat is happy, ill, or traumatized. The American Animal Hospital Association and veterinary sources advise looking at the wider pattern rather than treating kneading alone as a diagnosis.
Talk with a veterinarian if your cat’s behavior changes significantly, or if kneading becomes unusually frequent or seems compulsive—especially if you also notice signs of discomfort or distress. The behavior on its own is not enough to diagnose pain, anxiety, or a compulsive disorder.

What to do if claws hurt or damage things
If your cat’s claws make kneading uncomfortable or damage furniture or clothing, calmly redirect the cat to a thick blanket or another soft surface. PetMD recommends a thick blanket as a practical option; kneading does not mean your cat needs a special product.
