Mobile veterinary clinics on the Navajo Nation do more than provide spay/neuter surgery and vaccinations: they create opportunities for neighbors, local partners and veterinary teams to work together. Best Friends Animal Society describes a longstanding partnership shaped by cultural awareness, collaboration and practical efforts to make care reachable. For current clinic dates and locations, check the Navajo Nation Pets calendar.
A longstanding partnership built on collaboration
In an account published October 15, 2025, Best Friends Animal Society CEO Julie Castle describes the organization’s relationship with the Navajo Nation as dating to Best Friends’ early years. She names Phefelia Nez, a partner and board member, as part of that relationship. Castle emphasizes that work in tribal communities calls for cultural awareness and collaboration—not a one-size-fits-all approach.
Best Friends says its work with Navajo Nation partners includes adoption support, animal transport, spay/neuter clinics, veterinary support and community involvement. The effort involves Navajo Nation Animal Control, veterinary providers, local organizations, residents and volunteers. As the Navajo Nation Pets resource puts it, “We’re coming together as a community to help our cats and dogs here on the Navajo Nation.”
What the mobile clinics accomplished in 2024–25
Best Friends reports that its mobile clinics operated for more than 25 days during the October 2024–September 2025 reporting period. The organization says the clinics provided spay/neuter surgery for 1,498 dogs and cats, vaccinations for an additional 1,866 pets, and treatment for 231 sick or injured pets.

These are figures reported by Best Friends in Castle’s 2025 account, not independently audited totals. They describe that reporting year, not a current clinic schedule or a promise of future capacity. The article says clinics that year were primarily held in Tuba City and Kayenta; in August, a three-day clinic with the shelter medicine team took place in Moenkopi Village on the Hopi Nation.
Making care reachable takes more than setting up a clinic
Limited reliable internet and cell service can make online sign-ups difficult, while transporting several animals can be a major obstacle. Castle’s account describes how staff and volunteers adapted their outreach to those circumstances.

Door-to-door registration in Kayenta
Before a June 2025 clinic in Kayenta, staff went door to door to register pets. They met families at a home shared by several households, where 18 dogs needed care and their owners could not transport them all at once. Staff and volunteers made multiple trips. When a nearby neighbor asked for help with five dogs, they included those pets, too. Best Friends says 23 dogs ultimately received spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations and microchips.
The example shows how outreach and transport can complement clinic services: a place to provide care is only one part of making that care accessible. Castle describes the approach this way: “It’s about meeting people where they are, listening to what matters most to them, and finding solutions that reflect shared compassion for both pets and people.”
