Why Cats Knead, Blink Slowly, and Do Other Things That Puzzle Us

Kneading, slow blinking, purring, and other puzzling cat behaviors can have roots in scent, instinct, and social contact—but context matters.

Cats’ baffling habits often have practical roots in kittenhood, scent communication, hunting, or social interaction. A behavior can offer a clue to what a cat is experiencing, but it rarely translates into one certain message. Consider the setting, body language, and any change from your cat’s normal behavior.

Why does my cat knead soft things?

When a cat presses its paws alternately into a blanket, lap, or cushion, people often call it “making biscuits.” Cats Protection links kneading to kittenhood: kittens knead while nursing. Adult cats may knead when content, though that early association does not prove why an individual cat is doing it in a particular moment. If the claws make it uncomfortable, gently place a thick blanket between you and your cat rather than scolding or startling them. Cats Protection’s feline behaviour guides explain kneading alongside other common behaviors.

What does a slow blink mean?

A relaxed, slow blink can be a low-pressure social signal. Cats Protection describes it as a relaxed greeting and suggests you can slowly blink back. It is not a guaranteed translation: an eye movement means more when considered with the cat’s posture, surroundings, and overall demeanor. Let the cat choose whether to approach rather than treating a blink as an invitation to touch.

Why does my cat rub against me or bump my head?

Cheek rubbing leaves scent and can help a cat make familiar surroundings. Forehead contact with a person—often called head bunting—also involves close social contact; Cats Protection characterizes this as friendly. The two behaviors can overlap, but neither requires a human-style interpretation. Notice whether your cat seems relaxed and whether they continue to seek contact.

Why does my cat make a strange open-mouth face?

After sniffing something, a cat may hold its mouth open briefly in the Flehmen response. Cats Protection explains that this posture helps collect additional scent information through an organ in the roof of the mouth. It can look like a grimace to a person, but it is a sensory behavior. If the open-mouth posture is prolonged or accompanied by signs of illness or difficulty breathing, contact a veterinarian rather than assuming it is Flehmen.

Why does my cat spray?

Spraying is scent marking, not automatically defiance or a failure to use the litter box. Cats Protection describes several possible contexts: sexual motives, stress indoors, or ordinary scent marking outdoors. The circumstances matter, and the behavior alone cannot establish the cause. If spraying is new, persistent, distressing, or associated with other changes, ask a veterinarian for advice; Cats Protection also recommends veterinary consultation for health or behavior concerns.

Does purring always mean a cat is happy?

No. Purring commonly accompanies positive interactions with people or other cats, but it can also occur before sleep and, sometimes, when a cat is in pain. NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine discusses these different contexts in its guide, “Why Do Cats Purr?” A purr on its own is not a reliable happiness test. Consider posture, the situation, appetite, activity, and other health signs together.

Why does my cat bring home prey or toys?

There is no single verified explanation for every cat that carries prey or toys to a person or into the home. Veterinarian Hannah Hart, writing for PetMD, describes several theories: a cat may be practicing hunting skills associated with maternal teaching, sharing with family, bringing prey to a safe location, or inviting play. These are possibilities, not confirmed motives for an individual cat. A toy carried over may be an opening for play, but the behavior itself does not tell you for certain what the cat intends. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored explanation outlines the theories.

When should a behavior change concern me?

One familiar behavior is rarely enough to diagnose how a cat feels. Look for a pattern and for changes from that cat’s usual routine. International Cat Care’s feline emotions poster identifies hiding, freezing, and avoiding interaction among possible fear or anxiety responses in hospitalized cats; it also lists changes such as not eating, drinking, toileting, sleeping, playing, or exploring. Hospital observations are useful context, not a home diagnostic checklist.

For a cat that seems frightened, a quiet environment, gentle movement, a hiding place, and familiar-smelling belongings can support a sense of security; International Cat Care recommends these approaches in the hospital context. At home, seek veterinary advice if a behavior change is sudden, persistent, distressing, or comes with possible health signs. A veterinarian can help assess the whole situation rather than relying on a single behavior.
