It begins in kittenhood during nursing and often continues into adulthood. Adult cats commonly knead when relaxed, but the behavior alone cannot tell you exactly what a cat feels or why it is kneading. In most cases it is normal; a sudden change or possible fabric ingestion deserves attention.
What does it mean when a cat makes biscuits?
Making biscuits is the familiar name for kneading: a cat presses one front paw and then the other against a blanket, bedding, a lap, or another soft surface. Claws may extend and retract during the movement. Cats Protection describes adult kneading as often associated with contentment, but it is not a reliable emotional diagnosis: a cat may knead for several reasons, and the movement by itself does not prove happiness, affection, or trust. Why do cats knead?
It starts with nursing
Kittens knead their mother while nursing; the action is described as helping stimulate milk flow. Many cats retain the behavior as adults. Veterinary and welfare sources identify this early-life behavior as its origin, but that does not establish why a particular adult cat kneads in a given moment. Adult explanations are possibilities, not certainties
Kneading often happens when a cat is comfortable and relaxed. Other explanations offered by veterinary sources include making a soft resting place, leaving scent from glands in the paws, and stretching or relieving tension. Why does my cat knead me or a blanket?
A lap or blanket is a soft surface, so either can become a target for the same kneading behavior. If your cat settles on you and kneads, it may be doing so in a comfortable setting, but the action does not establish a single emotional meaning. Blanket kneading is likewise consistent with the behavior’s preference for soft surfaces; it is not, by itself, evidence of a problem.
How can I manage painful kneading?
- Offer a designated thick blanket or gently guide your cat to another suitable soft surface.
- Put a blanket over your lap if kneading claws scratch your skin.
- Keep your cat’s claws trimmed if scratches or furniture damage are an issue.
- Do not punish, yell at, hit, or spray your cat for kneading, and do not declaw to stop it.
These steps manage the contact or scratching; a blanket or nail trimmer should not be treated as a remedy for pain or anxiety. PetMD

When should I worry about a cat kneading?
Ordinary kneading on a lap or blanket usually needs no treatment. Contact your cat’s veterinarian if kneading becomes more frequent than usual or appears alongside other concerning changes. Kneading alone cannot diagnose discomfort, anxiety, or a behavioral problem, but a meaningful change in your cat’s behavior is worth discussing.
