Can Cats Eat Vaseline? What to Do After a Lick—and Safer Hairball Care

Vaseline can upset a cat’s stomach, and vomiting it may cause aspiration pneumonia. Don’t use it as a hairball remedy; contact a veterinarian after suspected ingestion.

No—don’t give your cat Vaseline as a hairball or constipation remedy. Swallowing petroleum jelly can upset a cat’s stomach, and if the cat vomits it, some may enter the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia. If your cat has licked or eaten Vaseline, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service for advice rather than trying a home treatment.

Can cats eat Vaseline?

Vaseline is petroleum jelly. ASPCA Poison Control describes petroleum jelly as a laxative and says ingestion can cause stomach upset; larger ingestions may cause more severe upset. Vomiting creates an additional concern: petroleum jelly can be inhaled into the lungs, potentially causing aspiration pneumonia. ASPCA Poison Control’s household-products guidance recommends contacting a veterinarian or poison control about suspected exposures.

The available guidance does not establish a cat-specific amount that is reliably safe or dangerous. Don’t use a guessed dose threshold to decide whether to seek help, and don’t intentionally feed Vaseline to your cat.

What to do if your cat licked or swallowed Vaseline

  1. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Pet Poison Helpline advises consulting a veterinarian before giving medicine or trying home treatment. Its first-aid guidance also warns about aspiration risk when oils are vomited.
  2. Share the details. Be ready to identify the product, estimate how much may have been swallowed, say when it happened, and describe any symptoms. If you’re unsure how much was ingested, say so rather than guessing.
  3. Don’t induce vomiting or give another household substance. Vomiting petroleum jelly could lead to inhalation into the lungs. Follow the veterinarian’s or poison-control professional’s directions instead.

Is Vaseline a good hairball remedy for cats?

No. Plain Vaseline is not a substitute for a cat hairball product. VCA describes oil-based, over-the-counter digestive lubricants and hairball gels made for cats, but says to use them under veterinary direction. Its guidance covers formulated products—not plain petroleum jelly. VCA’s guide to digestive lubricants and hairball gels advises following the veterinarian’s instructions and product label, keeping fresh water available, and monitoring the cat for abnormal changes. Contact the veterinary office if you suspect an overdose or adverse reaction.

When recurring hairballs need a veterinarian

Cats swallow hair while grooming and may periodically vomit hairballs. VCA advises contacting a veterinarian if a cat vomits hairballs more than once a month. The veterinarian may look for an underlying cause, including skin disease, and discuss options such as a hairball-specific diet. VCA’s guidance on vomiting in cats provides this frequency threshold.

Repeated hairballs are a reason to ask about the cause and appropriate management—not to start giving Vaseline. If you’re considering a formulated hairball gel, check with your cat’s veterinarian first.
