That does not mean every ingredient in every suitable cat food must be meat. For everyday feeding, choose a food labeled for cats and the right life stage whose nutritional adequacy statement says it is complete and balanced.
What does “obligate carnivore” mean for a cat?
Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes cats as obligate carnivores because they rely on nutrients found in animal products. Among the important examples are taurine and preformed vitamin A. These requirements distinguish feline nutrition from a simple choice between “meat” and “plants”: what matters in a packaged food is whether the finished diet supplies the nutrients cats need in appropriate amounts.

Ingredient lists can help you see what a food contains, but they do not, by themselves, establish that the finished diet is nutritionally adequate. Ingredients are listed in descending order by proportional weight. Check the food’s nutritional adequacy statement as well as its ingredients.

How to check whether cat food is complete and balanced
- Confirm the food is for cats. Do not assume a product made for another species is suitable for a cat.
- Check the life stage. Look for a statement that fits your cat’s needs, such as growth or adult maintenance. Kittens, pregnant or lactating cats, and adult cats may have different nutritional needs.
- Read the nutritional adequacy statement. It should indicate that the food is complete and balanced for the stated life stage, and explain whether adequacy is based on an AAFCO nutrient profile or a feeding protocol.
- Distinguish food from treats and toppers. Treats, toppers, and supplemental products may not be complete and balanced. Check the specific label rather than treating them as a meal replacement.
AAFCO sets nutrient profiles and feeding protocols used in pet-food labeling, but it does not approve, certify, or endorse individual foods. AAFCO explicitly says there is no “AAFCO-approved” pet food. Its guide to selecting the right pet food explains how to interpret the adequacy statement.

Can cats eat a vegan or vegetarian diet?
The British Veterinary Association advises against feeding cats vegetarian or vegan diets. It says cats need animal-sourced ingredients to provide essential nutrients such as taurine and preformed vitamin A, which are minimal or absent in plant ingredients. The BVA says it will continue to evaluate new research, but its current guidance is not to feed cats these diets.
Do not try to make a plant-based diet adequate by adding supplements on your own. Nutrient amounts and availability matter, and supplementation can be unsafe if it is not correctly formulated. If you are considering a nonstandard diet, speak with a veterinarian first. Read the BVA’s statement on vegan diets for dogs and cats.

Is wet food better than dry food?
Neither format is automatically best for every cat. First make sure the food is complete and balanced for the right life stage; then weigh moisture, storage, your cat’s preference, and any medical advice. Cornell reports these general format differences:

|---|---|---|
| Canned | At least 75 percent | Refrigerate unused portions after opening. Some cats prefer it. |
| Semi-moist | Approximately 35 percent | Check package directions for storage and handling. |
| Dry | Lower-moisture format | Store in a cool, dry place; an airtight container can help limit deterioration and preserve flavor. |
Some cats prefer canned food, some prefer dry food, and some do well with a mix. These general differences do not establish that one format is universally superior. For a cat with a medical condition, ask your veterinarian whether a particular format or diet is appropriate.

Can you make your cat’s food at home?
Homemade cat diets are difficult to balance. Cornell generally recommends commercial complete diets unless a veterinarian recommends a home-formulated diet for medical purposes. A recipe that appears to contain a range of ingredients may still fail to provide nutrients in the amounts cats need.
If a medical need makes home preparation appropriate, ask your veterinarian about individualized formulation rather than adapting a recipe or adding supplements yourself. Cornell University Hospital for Animals describes its nutrition service, which offers individualized diet formulation.

How to handle treats, water, and food storage
- Limit treats: Cornell’s rule of thumb is to keep treats to no more than 10–15 percent of a cat’s daily caloric intake.
- Provide fresh water: Keep fresh water available.
- Store food carefully: Follow package directions and expiration guidance. Refrigerate opened canned food; keep dry food in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid unnecessary supplements: Do not add vitamins or minerals to a complete and balanced diet unless a veterinarian recommends them. Excesses can be harmful.
Why Cornell advises against raw and gently cooked diets
Cornell does not recommend raw or gently cooked diets because it finds no clear health benefit and notes that pathogens can pose risks to cats and people. Raw meat can carry infectious-disease risks. Discuss a proposed diet change with your veterinarian, particularly if anyone in the household may be vulnerable to infection.

When to contact a veterinarian
Get veterinary guidance before changing the diet of a cat with a medical condition, starting supplements, or trying a homemade or plant-based diet. Cornell also advises that a cat who refuses food and is losing weight should be examined. A veterinary nutrition specialist can help formulate an individualized diet when medical needs warrant it.
