The gesture can also help a cat share a familiar group scent, mark a person or place as familiar, and express a relaxed social connection. These meanings overlap; rubbing is not a choice between affection and marking.
1. They communicate through scent
A cat’s face has scent glands, including around the cheeks and chin. When a cat presses or rubs those areas against you, it leaves scent signals behind. Cats use scent as part of how they communicate with one another, so rubbing a familiar person can be part of an affiliative interaction as well as scent transfer. VCA Animal Hospitals explains how facial rubbing transfers scent, and International Cat Care describes scent exchange through rubbing in social groups.

2. They make people and places smell familiar
Cheek rubbing is also a normal form of marking. A cat may rub against a person, furniture, or another object to leave facial scent there. In that sense, your cat is helping make its surroundings smell familiar. This is not the same as urine spraying: facial rubbing deposits scent from the face, while spraying is a separate behavior. VCA’s guidance on marking and spraying and Cornell Feline Health Center’s house-soiling guidance distinguish these behaviors.
3. It can be a friendly social gesture
When a cat head-bunts or rubs against someone it knows, the action can be part of a trusting, connected interaction. Veterinary guidance describes head-bunting as a sign of trust or social connection. That does not mean every rub has one precise emotional meaning, or that a cat is claiming ownership in the human sense. The scent and social functions can happen together. VCA’s overview of head-bunting discusses both scent transfer and its social meaning.

When should you be concerned?
Familiar, relaxed face rubbing is generally ordinary behavior. The rubbing itself does not diagnose a health problem. Contact a veterinarian if your cat’s marking behavior changes suddenly, if rubbing comes with altered litter-box habits, or if you notice other concerning changes. VCA advises an examination when an adult cat suddenly begins marking or has a change in litter-box behavior.
