Some cats enjoy gentle scratching on the rump or just above the tail, but there is no single proven reason that explains every cat’s response. The area can also be sensitive: veterinary handling guidance reports negative reactions to touch near the tail base. Treat a raised rear or a still posture as a response to notice—not automatic permission—and let your cat decide whether the contact continues.
Seven possible explanations—not seven proven causes
These are ways to interpret an individual cat’s behavior, not established biological mechanisms. A cat may enjoy the sensation, tolerate it only briefly, or dislike it altogether. The 2022 AAFP/ISFM Cat Friendly Veterinary Interaction Guidelines describe variable touch preferences, including negative responses to handling near the tail base. Read the guidelines.

1. The sensation feels pleasant to that cat
Gentle scratching may simply feel good to a cat that welcomes it. That preference is individual; it does not mean cats generally like being touched at the tail base.
2. The cat welcomes the interaction
A cat may enjoy the attention and contact from a familiar person. That is a reasonable interpretation when the cat voluntarily approaches and remains relaxed, but it is not a proven explanation for every rump-scratch response.

3. The cat seeks attention from a trusted person
Some cats may accept this touch as part of a comfortable interaction with someone they trust. Look at the cat’s behavior in the moment rather than assuming the location itself is a request for affection.
4. The cat may have an itch or grooming concern
A cat might respond to touch in a spot that feels itchy, but an apparent preference does not establish that cause. Cornell Feline Health Center notes that compulsive licking around the tail head can be associated with fleas; allergies, disease, and stress can also be involved in overgrooming. Cornell’s guide to overgrooming explains why persistent licking deserves attention.

5. A raised rear may be a response, not a deliberate request
A cat raising its hindquarters when touched does not, by itself, show that it wants more. The posture’s meaning is not established by the sources here, so judge the whole interaction: whether the cat approaches, stays loose, and re-engages—or turns away, stiffens, or shows other signs of discomfort.

6. The cat may be sensitive and become overstimulated
Some cats enjoy petting only up to a point. Cornell describes petting-induced aggression as potentially related to overstimulation or a cat trying to control when petting ends. Tail lashing, dilated pupils, or ears moving backward may come before a bite or scratch. See Cornell’s information on aggression in cats.

7. A sudden or intense reaction may signal discomfort
Marked sensitivity near the back or tail can have a medical explanation. Feline hyperesthesia is one possibility; signs can include rippling skin, sudden aggression, and self-directed scratching. It cannot be diagnosed from one reaction, and other causes are possible. Cornell’s overview of feline hyperesthesia describes the condition and its signs.
How to tell whether your cat wants you to continue
Offer only a brief, gentle touch and let the cat control what happens next. The AAFP/ISFM guideline says: “Providing the cat with the choice to sit, stand, lie down and to move body parts during handling leads to more positive interactions when compared with restraint.” The 2022 guideline supports allowing the cat to move freely rather than holding it in place.

Contact a veterinarian if sensitivity is new or intense, or if your cat repeatedly bites or scratches itself, overgrooms, loses hair, or develops skin lesions. These signs can have causes besides hyperesthesia, so increasing or changing the scratching is not a substitute for assessment. Cornell notes that persistent overgrooming can be linked to fleas, allergies, disease, or stress.

What grooming does—and does not—explain
Cats spend an estimated 30 to 50 percent of their day grooming themselves, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center, which attributes the estimate to Pamela Perry, D.V.M. Cornell’s grooming overview provides that general context; it does not show that cats enjoy being scratched near the tail.
