It is a normal form of feline communication: scent from glands around the face helps make people and places familiar. A bunting can be a greeting, friendly contact, scent-sharing, investigation, or a way to feel reassured—and more than one explanation may fit. It does not, by itself, prove what your cat is feeling or mean it wants to be petted.
1. Your cat is marking you as familiar
Cats have scent glands on their cheeks, forehead, and chin. When they rub these areas against a person or object, they can leave facial scent behind. VCA Animal Hospitals describes these glands as containing pheromones. The scent is part of how cats communicate familiarity and make their surroundings recognizable; it is not necessarily a hostile territorial claim or an attempt to establish dominance.

A cat may use the same behavior on a caregiver, furniture, or another familiar surface. Rubbing a person is one way of including that person in the cat’s familiar environment. VCA Animal Hospitals explains feline head bunting, while the Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of cat social behavior describes cats rubbing scent-gland areas on their surroundings and other cats.

2. It may be a greeting or friendly contact
Many cats rub their heads against people when approaching them, including familiar caregivers. Veterinary guidance describes this contact as affiliative: it can signal familiarity and a willingness to interact. It is reasonable to read a relaxed greeting as friendly, but a rub cannot tell you exactly what the cat feels, and it does not always mean the same thing in every situation. The AAFP/ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines discuss rubbing caregivers as both scent marking and a sign of familiarity.

3. Your cat may be refreshing a shared group scent
Cats that are familiar with one another may rub against each other, helping create or refresh a shared scent. That scent communication can be part of living together socially; it does not mean one cat literally owns another. A cat rubbing against you can fit into the same broad pattern of making familiar members of its social environment smell familiar.
Facial rubbing is one of several ways cats use scent in their surroundings and social relationships. VCA’s guide to cats rubbing their faces on people and objects covers scent marking in households and familiar groups.

4. Your cat could be investigating you or signaling a need
A rub can happen in a context where a cat is seeking information, attention, food, or play. For example, if it often approaches and rubs you around a familiar mealtime, the routine may help explain the timing. But the rub alone is not a reliable, specific request. Notice what is happening around it—your cat’s posture, vocalizing, activity, and usual routine—rather than assuming that every head rub means “feed me” or “pet me.”
A cat you do not know may also rub against you while investigating. That contact is not automatic permission to touch it. Move slowly, watch whether the cat stays relaxed or withdraws, and let it choose whether to continue the interaction. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored guide to cats rubbing against people discusses greeting, information gathering, and context-dependent needs.

5. Face rubbing may help your cat feel reassured
Some veterinary guidance describes relaxed face rubbing as potentially reassuring or self-soothing. This is a plausible function, not a way to identify the cause of every individual rub. A calm cat rubbing briefly during ordinary interaction is different from a sudden, persistent, or forceful change in behavior.
Does a head rub mean your cat wants to be petted?
Not necessarily. Bunting can be friendly without being an invitation to touch, particularly when the cat is unfamiliar. Let the cat set the pace: pause, observe its body language, and allow it to approach or move away. If it turns away, withdraws, or otherwise ends contact, do not pursue it. Read the whole interaction rather than treating the head rub as a standalone signal.

When head rubbing may need veterinary attention
Head pressing is different from ordinary bunting
Ordinary bunting is a brief rub or press during social contact. Head pressing is sustained pushing of the head against a wall, corner, or other surface, often without relaxed body language. It may occur with signs such as pacing or vision changes. If you see head pressing, or it occurs alongside other signs of illness, seek immediate veterinary assessment. PetMD’s guide to cat headbutts and head pressing explains the distinction and advises prompt veterinary attention.

Contact a veterinarian if rubbing becomes sudden, excessive, compulsive, or aggressive, especially if you notice other changes in your cat’s behavior or health. Excessive rubbing can have different possible causes; examples discussed by PetMD include allergies, fleas, ear infections, intracranial disease, and feline hypersensitivity disorder. Those possibilities are not a diagnosis, so do not try to determine or treat the cause based on rubbing alone. PetMD’s article on rubbing behavior discusses when a change warrants veterinary advice.
