Some litter scattering is a normal part of digging and covering. If your cat flings a lot of litter, the box may be cramped, the litter may not suit your cat, or the setup may be difficult or uncomfortable to use. Scattering alone does not diagnose a health or behavior problem; a new change in litter-box habits deserves closer attention.
Why cats kick litter out of the box
Digging and covering
Cats may scratch before or after they eliminate as they dig and cover. A little scatter can happen even when the box is suitable. The amount that is “normal” has not been quantified, so the mess alone cannot tell you whether something is wrong.

A box that feels too small
A cat needs room to enter, turn, dig, and cover without feeling cramped. A small or awkward tray may make litter spill over the sides. Cornell Feline Health Center advises larger boxes for large or overweight cats, and the ASPCA lists an undersized box as a possible litter-box management problem.

Litter depth, scent, or texture
Cats can have preferences about the litter they step on and dig through. Cornell says most cats prefer unscented, finer-textured litter at about one to two inches deep. The ASPCA also flags excessive depth as a possible problem. These are starting points, not rules that suit every cat.

Access, cleanliness, or discomfort
A dirty box, an inconvenient location, an awkward shape, or difficulty getting in and out can affect how a cat uses the tray. Litter, box design, location, access, and medical discomfort can all contribute to elimination problems, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual.
How to reduce the mess without making the box less comfortable
- Observe the pattern. Notice whether your cat digs before or after eliminating, flings litter while turning, eliminates over the rim, or goes outside the box. The mess alone is not a diagnosis.
- Check the fit and entry. Make sure your cat can enter, turn around, dig, and cover comfortably. If the tray seems cramped, consider a larger open-top box. Keep entry height in mind for kittens, older cats, and cats with limited mobility.
- Review the litter. As a starting point, try unscented, finer-textured litter at roughly one to two inches deep. If you change the litter, do so gradually and watch whether your cat accepts it; preferences vary.
- Keep the box clean and reachable. Scoop and clean it regularly, and place it somewhere quiet and accessible.
- Use a mat for cleanup, not as a behavior fix. A litter-catching mat may collect some scattered granules, but it does not address why your cat is digging or guarantee less scattering.
Choosing a box setup
There is no one design that suits every cat. Weigh room to dig and turn, ease of entry, and your cat’s comfort against how much litter the design contains.

When to contact a veterinarian
Talk with a veterinarian if the litter-box behavior is new, especially if you also notice straining, frequent attempts, changes in urination or defecation, or elimination outside the box. Medical conditions can disrupt normal elimination, and it is safer to assess a change than to assume your cat is simply messy. Kicking litter by itself does not establish that your cat is ill.
