What might make a cat dip a paw in water?

A health or mobility change may affect drinking
Health problems can change a cat’s drinking habits, activity, or comfort. Feline osteoarthritis can be subtle, and the FDA notes that environmental adjustments, such as raising bowls for affected cats, may help. What can you try at home?
- Offer a different bowl. If your cat’s whiskers touch the sides, try a clean, wide, shallow bowl. Keep providing fresh water and see whether your cat chooses to drink from it. A bowl change is an experiment, not a guaranteed cure. Cat Behavior Associates
- Make water easy to access. Try an additional water station in a location your cat can reach comfortably. In a home with multiple pets, consider whether another animal could be blocking access. - Observe the bigger pattern. Note whether paw dipping is longstanding or new, whether your cat appears to drink normally, and whether appetite, activity, or comfort has changed. This context is more useful than the paw dip alone when deciding whether to seek advice.
When should you call a veterinarian?
Contact your veterinarian if paw dipping starts suddenly and persists, or if it comes with reduced or markedly increased drinking, an appetite change, low activity, apparent pain, or other unusual behavior. Cats can hide pain, and the behavior itself cannot reveal whether an underlying problem is present. How to choose a water setup
There is no validated ranking of bowls or fountains for stopping paw dipping. Choose a setup based on practical fit: whether it is wide and shallow enough to avoid whisker contact, easy to clean and refill, placed somewhere accessible, and suited to your cat’s apparent preference for still or moving water.
