A cat needs a secure carrier that continuously allows fresh air to move through it. Veterinary guidance recommends an appropriately sized, ventilated carrier with a dependable closure; in a vehicle, the carrier must also be secured and kept at a comfortable temperature. A light cover can help a frightened cat hide, but it must not block the ventilation openings.
The direct reason sealed containers are unsafe
An airtight container prevents the airflow that safe animal transport requires. As a cat breathes, it adds moisture and carbon dioxide to the enclosed air while consuming oxygen. In a sealed space there is no dependable way for fresh air to replace it, and heat can build up around the animal. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s travel guidance calls for adequate ventilation and confinement in a suitable carrier, not an airtight container (AVMA travel brochure).

Sealing a container also makes it harder to notice a problem. A cat that becomes distressed, overheats, vomits or has difficulty breathing may not be visible or reachable quickly if the container has no openings. A carrier designed for animals lets you check the cat, maintain airflow and remove the top or open a door when a veterinary professional needs access.
Airflow is a requirement, not an optional comfort feature
Ventilation should remain open for the entire trip. Holes that are tiny, covered by luggage or pressed against a seat do not provide the same protection as clear, unobstructed openings. Do not rely on a lid that snaps shut so tightly that air cannot circulate, even if the trip is short.

Temperature can become dangerous inside a closed vehicle
A parked car can heat rapidly, and a sealed box inside it adds another layer of trapped heat. The AVMA advises never leaving a cat in a parked car in warm weather (AVMA warm-weather pet safety guidance). Air conditioning or an open window during travel does not make it acceptable to leave the animal unattended after the vehicle is stopped.
Stress and welfare matter as much as physical confinement
Transport is already stressful for many cats. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 position statement explains that the way a cat is transported can affect patient distress and may impair feline welfare. Ilona Rodan, DVM, DABVP (Feline), AdvCertFB, chair of the FelineVMA Feline Welfare Committee, said: “This update emphasizes the role of how transporting cats impacts patient distress and has the potential to impair feline welfare,” (FelineVMA news release, November 25, 2025). A ventilated, stable carrier and reduced visual stimulation address those welfare concerns better than an improvised sealed container.

What an appropriate cat carrier must provide
Choose a carrier made for animal transport rather than adapting household storage equipment. The FelineVMA caregiver guide describes hard plastic carriers as safe and easy to clean and recommends a removable top and suitable openings (FelineVMA caregiver guide).

|---|---|---|
| Fresh-air exchange | No reliable airflow when closed | Openings are designed to allow continuous ventilation |
| Closure | A lid may be difficult to open quickly or may fail to contain the cat | A dependable door or latch keeps the cat inside while permitting access when needed |
| Space | Often selected for storage, not an animal’s posture or movement | Appropriately sized so the cat can move comfortably without being tossed around |
| Access for care | Usually requires removing a tight lid or opening the whole container | Door and, ideally, a removable top make loading and examination easier |
| Cleaning | Materials may absorb urine, vomit or odors | Hard plastic is easy to wipe and disinfect, according to the FelineVMA guide |
| Vehicle placement | Shape and strength may not suit secure placement | Can be positioned and restrained according to veterinary travel guidance |
Size the carrier for comfortable movement
The cat should be able to stand, turn around and lie down in a natural position. Avoid a carrier so large that the cat can be thrown from side to side during braking, and avoid one so small that the cat is forced into a cramped posture. The appropriate size depends on the individual cat and the carrier’s internal dimensions; check the usable interior rather than the outside measurements.

- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
Look for practical openings and a removable top
Ventilation openings should be distributed so that air can reach the cat even when the carrier is placed on the vehicle floor. A removable top is useful for a fearful or painful cat because a veterinarian can examine the animal in the lower half instead of dragging it through a narrow door. Every opening must remain clear during the journey.
Check the closure before every trip
Test the door, hinges and latches at home. The cat must not be able to push the door open, and the carrier should not spring apart when lifted. Do not assume that a generic box or container has been tested for animal transport. The FelineVMA position statement discusses appropriate carriers and placement but does not establish crash certification for unspecified products; claim certification only when the particular carrier’s documentation verifies it.

How to make the carrier less frightening
Training the cat to accept the carrier reduces the temptation to use an unsafe container during a rushed departure. The FelineVMA caregiver guidance recommends keeping the carrier in a familiar area and gradually building positive experiences (FelineVMA caregiver guide).

Put it in a quiet room where the cat already rests. Keep the door open and make sure the ventilation openings stay unobstructed.
- Add familiar bedding. Place a washable towel or blanket inside. The item should fit without covering the vents or preventing the door from closing.
- Allow voluntary exploration. Let the cat sniff, enter and leave at its own pace. Avoid forcing the cat into the carrier for practice sessions.
- Build duration gradually. Once the cat is comfortable entering, close the door briefly, then open it before the cat becomes distressed. Increase the time in small steps.
- Practice movement. Lift the carrier carefully for short periods and take brief practice rides only when the cat remains calm. Stop and seek veterinary advice if the cat shows significant distress.
How to transport the cat safely in a vehicle
- Prepare the carrier indoors. Use clean, secure bedding and confirm that every ventilation path is open. Keep identification and veterinary contact information with you.
- Load the cat calmly. If the carrier has a removable top, take it off, place the cat in the lower half and replace the top instead of pushing a struggling cat through a small doorway.
- Close and test the latch. Check the closure by gently lifting the carrier and applying light pressure to the door. Do not travel if it can open.
- Place the carrier on the vehicle floor. The FelineVMA recommends the floor behind the driver or passenger seat. This position helps prevent the carrier from sliding and avoids the hazards of an unsecured seat.
- Use a seat belt only when appropriate. The FelineVMA advises using a seat belt only with a carrier that is crash-test-certified. Do not thread a belt around an unverified carrier and assume it is protected in a collision.
- Keep the cabin comfortable. Maintain a moderate temperature and ventilation. Do not put the carrier in direct sun or next to a strong heater or air-conditioning outlet.
- Keep the carrier level and stable. Do not stack luggage on it or wedge clothing against its openings. Check that doors and vents remain accessible.
- Never leave the cat unattended in a parked car in warm weather. Take the cat with you or arrange a safe, temperature-controlled alternative, following the AVMA’s warm-weather advice (AVMA warm-weather pet safety guidance).
Can a blanket cover the carrier?
Yes, a light cover can give a cat a hiding opportunity and reduce visual exposure. Drape it loosely over part of the carrier, leaving all ventilation openings clear. Check from several angles that fabric has not been pulled into a vent, pressed against the sides or trapped by a door. A heavy, tightly wrapped blanket that turns a ventilated carrier into a sealed box defeats the purpose.

Comparing common carrier choices
Material alone does not determine whether a carrier is safe. Evaluate the actual design against the same criteria every time.
| Carrier choice | What to verify | When it may be unsuitable |
|---|---|---|
| Hard plastic carrier | Clear vents, secure latch, washable surfaces, comfortable internal dimensions and a removable top if possible | When vents are blocked, the door is loose or the cat cannot move naturally |
| Soft-sided carrier | Ventilation panels that remain open, strong seams, a reliable closure and a firm base that stays level | When mesh is covered, collapses against the cat or cannot be restrained safely in the vehicle |
| Cardboard or temporary carrier | Only use if it is purpose-designed for short animal transport, has adequate airflow and cannot be torn or opened by the cat | When it has no secure closure, becomes damp or is being used as a substitute for a sealed storage box |
| Household storage bin, cooler or trunk | Nothing about a typical storage design guarantees animal-safe ventilation, access or restraint | Whenever the lid closes the container airtight or openings can be blocked |
No generic carrier should be described as crash-certified without verification for that exact model. If a trip involves unusual medical needs, ask the cat’s veterinarian which design and restraint method are appropriate.
Common mistakes and the safer correction
- “It is only a five-minute trip.” Replace the sealed box with a ventilated carrier before leaving. A short duration does not create a reliable airflow system.
- “The cat will be calmer if there are no holes.” Reduce visual stimulation with a partial, breathable cover instead of eliminating ventilation.
- “The carrier is safer on the passenger seat.” Follow the FelineVMA placement recommendation: use the floor behind the driver or passenger seat. Use a belt only with a verified crash-test-certified carrier.
- “A closed car is fine while I run inside.” Never leave the cat in a parked car in warm weather, even if the carrier is ventilated.
- “Any container with a lid is a carrier.” Confirm airflow, size, access, closure, cleanability and vehicle fit. If one of those functions is missing, choose another carrier.
- “Cover every side to stop the cat seeing out.” Cover only part of the carrier and inspect the vents after placing the fabric.
If you have no carrier right now
Do not improvise an airtight container. Call the veterinary practice and ask about a safe temporary transport option, or obtain a purpose-designed carrier before moving the cat whenever circumstances allow. If the cat is already enclosed in a sealed container, open it promptly in a safe indoor area, transfer the cat to a ventilated carrier and contact a veterinarian if breathing or behavior seems abnormal. Do not place a loose cat in a moving vehicle.
What the official guidance does—and does not—specify
The FelineVMA’s 2025 motor-vehicle position statement is the most current transport-specific guidance cited here. It identifies adequate ventilation, an appropriate carrier, safe vehicle placement, careful use of covers and avoidance of warm parked cars as core precautions (FelineVMA 2025 position statement). The AVMA brochure supplies the basic recommendation for airflow and confinement (AVMA travel brochure).
These sources do not provide a universal “safe number of minutes” for an airtight container, an oxygen-percentage threshold for home use or a product list that is automatically certified. That is why a sealed container should not be treated as acceptable for any fixed duration. For a cat with heart, lung, anxiety, motion-sickness or other medical concerns, obtain individualized instructions from the veterinarian before travel.
