It can also be a response to fear, stress, pain, or illness. The key question is whether this is familiar behavior for your cat or a new or increasing change—especially if eating, drinking, litter habits, activity, or sociability have changed too.
Ten common reasons cats sneak around
These are common possibilities, not a ranked list or a way to diagnose a cat. More than one may apply, and a cat’s usual temperament matters.

1. Instinct to stay concealed
Secluded spaces can help a cat feel protected from perceived threats. Hiding can also let a cat lie in wait before pouncing, much as it might when stalking prey or a toy. PetMD’s veterinary overview of hiding explains both safety and hunting as reasons; Cats Protection’s guidance also describes hiding before a playful pounce.

2. A protected place to rest
A quiet, warm, sheltered spot may feel like a good place to sleep without being disturbed. Cats Protection notes that cats can spend at least 12 hours a day sleeping; that is general guidance, not a sleep target for every cat.

3. Stalking and pouncing during play
Crouching behind furniture and suddenly leaping at a toy can be normal play. Some cats also pounce on moving feet or legs, which can hurt and should be redirected to an appropriate toy. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes stalking and pouncing from hiding as part of play-related aggression.
4. Curiosity about a new object
A box, bag, or unfamiliar object may invite investigation or become a temporary hiding place. Check that it is stable, has no hazardous handles or loose parts, and lets your cat get out freely.
5. Unfamiliar people or animals
Guests, a new pet, or an unfamiliar animal outside may make a cat choose distance and cover rather than approach. Fear-related avoidance can be a way to cope, not misbehavior. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s discussion of feline behavior problems covers fear and anxiety triggers.

6. Loud or unsettling events
Thunder, fireworks, vacuuming, and construction noise can startle or frighten cats. A cat may retreat while the noise is happening and take time to emerge afterward.
7. Changes at home or in territory
Moving, a changed routine, a new household member, or tension between cats can make familiar surroundings feel less secure. For a new cat, Cats Protection recommends a quiet starter room with essentials available so the cat can settle at its own pace. Environmental changes and perceived threats can also contribute to hiding, as discussed in the AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines.
8. A naturally shy temperament or personal preference
Some cats consistently prefer quiet, tucked-away resting places or take longer to warm up to people. If the pattern is stable and the cat otherwise seems well, that preference alone does not establish that anything is wrong.

9. Pain or illness
Cats may withdraw when they feel unwell or are in pain. A sudden increase in hiding is more concerning if it comes with changes such as eating or drinking less, vomiting, diarrhea, altered litter habits, coughing, sneezing, lower activity, or reduced social interaction. PetMD and Cats Protection both advise seeking veterinary guidance when hiding occurs with signs of illness.

Stalking or other repeated behavior may merit assessment if it happens far more often or lasts much longer than its apparent purpose would explain. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that medical problems should be ruled out before a compulsive disorder is diagnosed.
How to tell ordinary hiding from a concerning change
One episode rarely tells the whole story. Compare the behavior with your own cat’s baseline and look at the circumstances around it:

- Baseline: Is this a familiar habit, or has the hiding started suddenly or become more frequent?
- Trigger: Did it follow play, a visitor, a loud noise, or a change at home—or does it happen without an apparent trigger?
- Other changes: Is your cat eating, drinking, using the litter box, moving, and responding to people as usual? Note vomiting, diarrhea, breathing signs, or changes in activity too.
- Choice and refuge: Does your cat have a quiet place to retreat and the freedom to leave it?
These observations can help a veterinarian understand the pattern, but they cannot identify a cause by themselves. Merck recommends noting when the behavior began, how often and how long it occurs, whether its pattern has changed, and what is happening in the cat’s routine and environment. See Merck’s guide to diagnosing behavior problems in cats.
What to do when your cat hides
- Provide a quiet, covered refuge away from busy areas, noise, and disturbance. A covered bed or a suitable covered space can help; some cats prefer an elevated retreat.
- Let your cat choose when to come out. Do not reach in or force the cat out, since this can increase anxiety and prolong hiding.
- Reduce avoidable triggers where you can. If the cat is new to your home, set up a quiet room with essentials nearby, but not directly beside the hiding spot.
- If play appears to be the reason, offer an appropriate toy for stalking and pouncing rather than encouraging attacks on hands or feet.
- Keep a brief record of when the hiding occurs, how long it lasts, possible triggers, and any changes in health or routine.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian if your cat is hiding more than usual, particularly if the change is sudden, persistent, or accompanied by eating or drinking less, vomiting, diarrhea, changed litter habits, coughing, sneezing, fur loss, withdrawal, reduced activity, or other signs of illness. PetMD advises an examination within a couple of days when hiding accompanies the symptoms listed in its guidance. Ask your veterinarian how quickly your cat should be seen; severe or rapidly worsening signs may call for more urgent advice.
If a medical cause has been excluded but the behavior remains persistent or disruptive, ask your veterinarian whether qualified behavior support is appropriate.

What reported figures can—and cannot—tell you
In Cats Report UK 2024, Cats Protection reported that 64% of cats had displayed at least one potential stress behavior in the previous 12 months. The report’s chart listed “Hides around the house for long periods of time” for 13%. These are UK report figures about reported behavior; they do not show that hiding in an individual cat has a diagnosed cause.
Nicky Trevorrow, Behaviour Manager at Cats Protection, said: “Stress, particularly chronic stress, is a significant welfare issue for cats, and one that is easily overlooked, as cats are unfortunately so good at hiding it.”
