The sneeze alone cannot identify the cause. If your cat is struggling to breathe, seek emergency veterinary care; if sneezing persists or discharge is heavy, crusted, or accompanied by other signs of illness, contact a veterinarian.
What might be causing your cat to sneeze?
Common causes include upper respiratory infections and irritation in the nose, but several other conditions can produce similar signs. A veterinarian needs to consider the whole pattern rather than diagnosing from sneezing alone.

Upper respiratory infection
Feline herpesvirus type 1 and feline calicivirus are common viral causes of feline upper respiratory infection. Bacteria, including Bordetella bronchiseptica and Chlamydophila felis, can also be involved. Infections can spread through secretions and contaminated objects such as bowls, litter boxes, toys, and bedding. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
In addition to sneezing, an infection may cause nasal or eye discharge, congestion, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers, reduced appetite, lethargy, or sometimes fever. Signs vary, so this combination is not a reliable home diagnostic test. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
Irritants or foreign material
Dust, powder, smoke, fumes, and aerosol sprays can irritate the nasal passage. A plant fragment or other material may also inflame or obstruct it. If the sneezing began suddenly after a possible exposure, tell the veterinarian when and what your cat may have encountered; timing is useful history but does not prove the cause. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
Other possible causes
Allergies, fungal infection, inflammation, nasal masses such as polyps or tumors, and disease extending from the mouth—including tooth-root abscesses—can also be associated with sneezing or nasal discharge. Nasopharyngeal polyps are one possible upper-airway issue, particularly in kittens and very young cats. [VCA Animal Hospitals] [Cornell Feline Health Center]
When is sneezing urgent?
- Emergency: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath warrants emergency veterinary evaluation. [VCA Urgent Care]
- Contact a veterinarian promptly: Sneezing that persists, excessive nasal discharge, or discharge crusted around the nose merits veterinary attention. Discharge from the eyes or nose alongside reduced appetite, lethargy, or other signs of illness is also a reason to call. Kittens and cats with severe signs warrant particular attention; a veterinarian can assess the individual situation. [VCA Urgent Care] [VCA Animal Hospitals]
- Brief and isolated: If your cat sneezes once or occasionally and otherwise acts normally, you can monitor for now. Call if sneezing recurs or persists, or if other symptoms appear. [VCA Urgent Care]
VCA Animal Hospitals Urgent Care notes that an occasional sneeze is common for pets, while an ongoing sneeze or continuously runny nose is a sign a pet should be seen by a veterinarian. [VCA Urgent Care]
What will the veterinarian check?
The veterinarian will ask when the sneezing started, whether it is worsening, whether your cat has been around other cats, and whether you have noticed discharge, appetite or energy changes, or a possible irritant or foreign-material exposure. The physical examination may include the nose, mouth, throat, ears, and lungs. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
Further testing depends on the findings and suspected cause. Possible investigations include blood count, blood chemistry, urinalysis, cultures, testing for infectious organisms, chest X-rays, CT or MRI, and biopsy. These are options, not a standard checklist for every sneezing cat; the veterinarian selects what is appropriate to the case. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
How is a sneezing cat treated?
Treatment depends on the cause and how sick the cat is. Many uncomplicated upper respiratory infections can be managed at home with veterinary guidance. Depending on the findings, a veterinarian may recommend eye medication, antibiotics for bacterial disease or suspected secondary bacterial complications, or antiviral medication. Antibiotics do not treat viruses themselves. Cats that are dehydrated, depressed, or severely ill may need hospitalization and fluid replacement. [VCA Animal Hospitals]
What can you safely do at home?
Home measures can support comfort, but they do not establish the cause or replace veterinary advice.
