If your cat may have swallowed aspirin, call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately—even if your cat seems fine. Cats clear aspirin slowly, and there is no reliable household dose that can rule out poisoning. Do not make your cat vomit or give any home treatment unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

What to do if your cat ate aspirin

  1. Call now. Contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary clinic. Cornell also lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 855-289-0358; check directly for current availability and fees. Do not delay veterinary contact while deciding which service to use. Cornell’s common cat hazards guidance provides its poison-control information.
  2. Keep the product packaging. Tell the veterinary professional the product strength, how much may be missing, when the exposure may have happened, and your cat’s weight. Bring the package or label if you go to a clinic. Cornell’s poisons guidance recommends providing the product sample or label when available.
  3. Do not induce vomiting. Only do so if a veterinary professional specifically directs you. Vomiting can cause additional harm with some poisons, and whether it is appropriate depends on the case.
  4. Do not give charcoal, food, medication, or a home remedy unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional instructs you. Decontamination and treatment decisions belong to veterinary professionals.

Why aspirin is especially risky for cats

Aspirin, also called acetylsalicylic acid, can cause salicylate poisoning. Cats eliminate it slowly: the Merck Veterinary Manual explains that a deficiency in glucuronyl transferase contributes to prolonged elimination and gives a feline half-life of about 37.5 hours in its toxicology discussion. That figure explains why exposure warrants prompt attention; it is not a way to estimate a safe waiting period or decide at home whether a dose is harmless. See Merck’s review of toxicoses from human analgesics in animals.

Do not use a dose estimate from the internet to rule out poisoning. The cited veterinary reference discusses adverse effects in therapeutic-use contexts, but it does not establish a validated household exposure threshold for owners. A veterinarian or poison-control professional needs the details of the possible exposure to assess the risk.

Signs of aspirin poisoning in cats

Possible early signs include listlessness, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting—with or without blood—fever, and unusually deep or rapid breathing. Signs can vary with the amount and timing of exposure, and a cat may not show symptoms right away. Merck’s overview of poisoning from human over-the-counter drugs describes the potential range of effects.

Severe poisoning can cause gastrointestinal irritation or ulcers, liver injury, abnormal acid-base balance, seizures, coma, or prolonged bleeding. Do not wait for any of these signs to appear before calling if ingestion is possible.

How veterinarians treat aspirin poisoning

There is no antidote for aspirin toxicosis. A veterinarian chooses treatment based on the cat’s condition, the exposure details, and whether a particular intervention is safe. Care may include inducing vomiting when appropriate, activated charcoal with a cathartic, IV fluids to support diuresis and address dehydration, medication for gastrointestinal symptoms or ulcer protection, and other supportive care.

In severe cases involving metabolic acidosis, Merck notes that IV sodium bicarbonate may be used while acid-base status is monitored. These treatments require veterinary assessment and monitoring; they are not a home protocol. Merck’s principles of toxicosis treatment describe why decontamination and supportive care must be selected for the individual case.
