Spiders commonly curl their legs inward after death because many major leg joints have flexor muscles for bending but no matching extensor muscles. While the spider is alive, hemolymph pressure helps push those joints open; after death, active pressure control stops and the remaining flexor tension draws the legs into a folded posture.
The anatomy behind the death curl
A spider leg is not operated like a human arm, with a muscle pulling in each direction at every joint. At several important joints, the muscles are primarily flexors: they shorten to bend the leg. Straightening is assisted by pressure from hemolymph, the fluid that circulates through a spider’s open circulatory system.

Hemolymph is not vertebrate blood. It carries substances through the body in a different circulatory arrangement, but it can also act as a working fluid inside the legs. The legs contain narrow internal spaces connected to the body. Changes in pressure and fluid volume in those spaces help push joints toward extension.

The main body section to which the legs attach is the prosoma, often called the cephalothorax. Muscular activity in the prosoma helps generate and regulate pressure that contributes to extension. The system is therefore neither purely muscular nor a passive hydraulic piston: muscles bend the legs, while controlled fluid pressure assists in opening them.

Flexors bend the joints
When a flexor contracts, it pulls the relevant joint into a bent position. Flexion is essential for placing a foot, lifting a leg during a step and producing force during many movements. Flexors remain part of the mechanical system even when a spider is using pressure-assisted extension.
Pressure helps open them
At joints without dedicated extensor muscles, internal pressure supplies part of the force needed to straighten the leg. The pressure is generated and adjusted while the spider is alive, so extension is an active physiological process rather than a one-time inflation.
What changes when the spider dies
- Active control stops. A dead spider can no longer contract the muscles and coordinate the body processes that maintain pressure in the prosoma and legs.
- Hydraulic assistance fades. Without active pressurization, the pressure that normally helps open the major joints is no longer maintained in the same way.
- Flexor tension is no longer counteracted. The bending muscles and associated tissues can leave the joints in a flexed position.
- The legs fold toward the body. Several legs may curl under the spider, producing the familiar compact “death curl.”
This sequence explains the posture without implying that every leg joint behaves identically or that every species reaches exactly the same final angle. The visible result depends on the spider’s anatomy, the state of its tissues and the position of the legs at the time movement stops.
Why “hydraulic spider” is an incomplete description
Calling spider legs hydraulic is useful shorthand for the contribution of hemolymph pressure, but it can create two misleading impressions. First, the legs do not move without muscles. Flexors provide active force for bending, and muscles in the body help regulate the pressure that supports extension. Second, hydraulic pressure does not explain every movement equally well. Walking, jumping, turning and rapid escape can rely on different combinations of muscle force and fluid pressure.

The modern term: semi-hydraulic
A more precise description is semi-hydraulic. Muscle-driven flexion and pressure-assisted extension operate together. Fluid must move through channels in the legs, but that movement does not necessarily block rapid flexor action. Modeling of the legs of Cupiennius salei, published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology’s 2026 volume from work dated 2025, found that channel dimensions could support quick flexion across a broad range. The result fits a system in which fluid transport and muscle contraction coexist rather than compete in a simple either-or arrangement.
Escape running shows why behavior matters
A study of the large, fast-running spider Ancylometes concolor examined accelerated escape maneuvers rather than ordinary standing or walking. In the hind legs during those maneuvers, measured force vectors were inconsistent with hydraulic pressure being the dominant source of ground forces. The authors concluded that flexor activity dominated propulsion in those legs, while hydraulic extension still influenced the direction of movement.
That finding narrows the claim; it does not erase it. Hydraulic assistance can be important for extending a joint while flexor muscles dominate the force that drives a particular escape step. The dominant mechanism can change with species, behavior and the part of movement being measured.

How scientists came to this explanation
Ellis’s 1944 experiments
An early experimental foundation came from C. H. Ellis in 1944. His work associated spider leg extension with changes in the volume of fluid in the leg and with internal pressure. Those observations helped establish that extension involved more than a conventional pair of opposing muscles.

The 2022 Rice account of the death curl
In a Rice University report published July 25, 2022, graduate researcher Faye Yap summarized the mechanism this way: “They only have flexor muscles, which allow their legs to curl in, and they extend them outward by hydraulic pressure. When they die, they lose the ability to actively pressurize their bodies. That’s why they curl up.”
Her wording is a concise explanation of the visible postmortem posture. The anatomical qualification matters: “only have flexor muscles” refers to the major joints relevant to extension, not to a claim that every muscle in every spider leg is identical or that pressure controls every movement.
Recent modeling of hemolymph channels
The later Cupiennius salei model examines the channels through which hemolymph moves in the legs and how those channels interact with flexor-driven bending. Its significance is mechanical: the channels can be dimensioned in a way that allows rapid flexion over a wide operating range. That supports the idea of a coordinated, semi-hydraulic system rather than a leg that must choose between fluid movement and muscle action.
Do all dead spiders curl in exactly the same way?
No. The general explanation applies broadly, but the exact posture is not a universal postmortem signature. Several factors can change what an observer sees:

- Species anatomy: Joint structure, muscle arrangement and leg proportions differ among spiders.
- Starting position: A spider that dies while walking, climbing or resting may retain a different arrangement before the flexed posture develops.
- Behavior: A joint used for slow walking may be controlled differently from one used during an explosive escape.
- Which joint is observed: Pressure-assisted extension is especially relevant at major joints lacking conventional extensors, not necessarily at every small articulation.
- Postmortem condition: The final appearance can be affected by tissue stiffness, dehydration and contact with the surface, although the evidence summarized here does not establish one identical timeline or shape for all species.
For that reason, “spiders curl up when they die” is a useful general observation, not a test that can identify the exact cause or timing of death from posture alone.

The inward-folded legs indicate that the balance between flexor tension and pressure-assisted extension has changed. They do not show that the spider was powered by hydraulics alone, and they do not prove that every leg stopped in the same physiological state. A curled posture is the mechanical consequence readers notice; the underlying processes can vary across joints and species.
It is also important not to confuse the death curl with a defensive pose adopted by a living spider. Living spiders can hold their legs in many configurations and can change them rapidly. The explanation above concerns the loss of active pressure control after death, not a voluntary behavior.

Why engineers study the curled legs
The same structure that produces the postmortem curl can be useful as a compliant mechanical gripper. In the Rice University demonstration, researchers used deceased spiders as naturally derived actuators: pressure was applied to the body to open the legs, and the legs returned toward their curled state when pressure was released. Assistant professor Daniel Preston described the deceased spiders as “the perfect architecture for small scale, naturally derived grippers.”

Rice reported that one experimental gripper lifted more than 130% of its own body weight. The report also said that one specimen completed 1,000 open-close cycles before wear became apparent near that count. Those figures describe that particular laboratory demonstration, not the lifting capacity or durability of spiders in nature and not a consumer product specification.
This application is often called necrobotics. It uses a biological structure that already combines lightweight joints, flexor muscles and pressure-responsive movement. The engineering value comes from that combination; it does not change the biological reason a dead spider’s legs fold inward.
The most accurate one-sentence explanation
Many spiders have flexor-dominated leg joints whose extension depends partly on hemolymph pressure; death removes active pressure control, allowing the flexed posture to prevail. That is why the legs of a dead spider commonly curl toward its body, while the exact movement mechanics still vary by species, joint and behavior.
