Some historical accounts placed giraffes in “India,” but that did not always mean the modern Indian subcontinent. Older writers used the name loosely, sometimes for parts of East Africa, while giraffes also travelled from Africa through Arabian and Indian Ocean trade routes. Later retellings blurred those meanings into a false claim about where the animals lived in the wild.
“India” did not always mean the Indian subcontinent
In ancient and medieval geography, place-names could be broad and inconsistent. Berthold Laufer’s 1920 study, The Giraffe in History and Art, describes writers who used “India” for regions that included Ethiopia or Abyssinia. A 1996 scholarly article likewise notes that “India” and “Indian” could refer to East Africa south of Egypt, South Arabia, Indian Ocean islands, or the subcontinent.

Medieval labels such as “India the Greater” and “India the Lesser” had no fixed boundaries; Abyssinia could even be described as “Middle India.” So when an old text says a giraffe came from India, the name alone cannot establish that the writer meant the territory now called India.

Giraffes are African animals, but living animals travelled far beyond their wild habitats. Laufer describes giraffes being transported from the Somali coast through ports in southern Arabia and onward to India. A report that connects an animal with a particular place may therefore refer to a trade route, a port, or the ruler who sent it—not the animal’s natural range.

As examples, Laufer recounts a giraffe gift from Bengal to China in 1414 and another from Malindi in 1415. These details come through his historical synthesis; they illustrate how the location associated with a diplomatic gift could differ from the animal’s wild source.
How reports turned into a claim about giraffes in India
An account from 439 CE
Laufer reports that a Byzantine chronicle said Emperor Anastasius received an elephant and two “camelopardalas” from India in 439 CE. Laufer interprets “India” in that report as Ethiopia. The episode shows how a geographic label could mislead later readers; it is not proof of a wild giraffe population on the Indian subcontinent.

Thevet’s specific—and mistaken—location
In his 1575 Cosmographie universelle, André Thevet placed giraffes in mountains beyond the Ganges. Laufer argues that Thevet misunderstood African informants or interpreters, noting that his Arabic was poor. Thevet also described giraffes being transported via Aden and appearing in Cairo, details that fit the broader movement of animals through trade. His precise-sounding location could make the mistaken claim especially memorable.
Later compilations carried the confusion forward
Edward Topsell’s 1607 account listed giraffes in Ethiopia, India, and a region associated with Abyssinia. Laufer suggests that the classification of Abyssinia as “Middle India,” or confusion already present in earlier sources, helped blur an African place-name into India proper. Repetition across compilations could make a claim seem established even when it rested on shifting terminology and indirect reports.

What the historical claim does—and does not—show
- It does show that some writers and later compilers associated giraffes with places called India, using a geographic label whose meaning could vary.
- It does not show that people everywhere believed giraffes were native to the modern Indian subcontinent. The surviving examples are particular, mediated accounts, not evidence of universal agreement.
- It does not establish a wild Indian habitat for living giraffes. A reported animal’s route or diplomatic sender is different from its natural range.
There is a separate fossil caveat: the extinct giraffid Giraffa sivalensis is associated with India’s Siwalik Hills. That fossil record concerns an extinct relative and does not verify the historical claim that living giraffes originated in India.
