A cat that turns in a small circle before lying down may simply be following a settling routine. Veterinarians suggest that circling could be an inherited form of nest-making or a way to adjust a resting spot, but no single explanation has been confirmed. If your cat repeatedly cannot get comfortable or suddenly changes how it settles, contact a veterinarian: pain or a problem affecting the joints or spine can make lying down difficult.
Why do cats circle before they lie down?
Veterinary sources describe several possible reasons, rather than one proven cause. Circling may help a cat arrange its body, adjust the place where it plans to rest, or prepare a spot that feels safe. These ideas draw on instinctive nesting behavior, but they do not establish what any particular cat intends when it turns around.

Some cats also knead while settling. VCA describes kneading as soothing and connected to kitten nursing; that behavior may accompany settling, but it does not explain why every cat circles.

Is circling before bed normal?
A few turns followed by settling can be part of an ordinary routine. The number of turns alone does not identify a health problem. What matters more is whether your cat can lie down comfortably and whether the behavior is typical for them.
When should I call a veterinarian?
Seek veterinary advice if your cat keeps trying to lie down but cannot get comfortable, appears uncomfortable, or shows a marked change from its usual routine. Pain, arthritis, and back or spinal problems can make settling difficult. Circling by itself does not diagnose any of these conditions, so a veterinarian should assess persistent difficulty rather than relying on the behavior as a diagnosis.

Can I make my cat more comfortable?
You can offer a quiet, comfortable resting place and see whether your cat chooses to use it. Soft bedding is a reasonable comfort option; veterinary environment guidelines discuss soft blankets or towels and non-slip surfaces in a clinical setting. That guidance does not show that a particular bed will stop circling or treat pain or another underlying condition.
