Why Does My Dog Put His Face Underwater to Drink?

Dogs that put their faces underwater while drinking do not have one established explanation. Learn how to compare the behavior with your dog’s baseline and recognize thirst changes, drinking difficulty, and illness signs that need veterinary advice.

There is no proven, universal reason dogs dunk their muzzles while drinking. If your dog still drinks about the usual amount, can swallow comfortably, and otherwise acts normally, the posture alone is less concerning—but it is not a diagnosis or a guarantee that nothing is wrong. A behavior that began suddenly, comes with a change in water intake, or occurs alongside illness signs warrants a call to your veterinarian.

What face-dunking during drinking can—and cannot—tell you

Dogs sometimes drink and then place the nose or entire muzzle under the water. The available veterinary guidance does not establish one explanation for this exact behavior. It does not show that a dog is necessarily cooling itself, playing, expressing a breed instinct, or signaling a particular disease. Those interpretations may sound plausible, but they have not been demonstrated for an individual dog simply from observing the posture.

The closest published question-and-answer case is Petco’s “Why Is My Dog Suddenly Dunking Her Face in the Water Bowl?” A dog owner described drinking followed by dunking the entire muzzle in a bucket. Sara Farmer, DVM, said the behavior sounded less concerning if the dog continued to drink the same amount and had no trouble drinking, while advising a veterinary examination if the owner remained worried. The answer is dated June 26, 2018; the search listing showed an update date of September 23, 2025. That is conditional reassurance, not a blanket all-clear.

A PubMed-indexed 2024 paper titled “Voluntary head dunk: cooperative care for irrigating canine noses and eyes and rapid cooling” describes training dogs to immerse the nose or head for specific care or cooling tasks. It does not establish why dogs put their faces underwater during ordinary drinking, how common the behavior is, or whether it has a particular medical meaning.

Use your dog’s normal pattern as the first decision point

Compare the new posture with your dog’s own baseline rather than trying to match a universal “normal” behavior. The following distinctions help decide whether to monitor or call.

What you observe What it means for next steps
The behavior has been present for a long time; water intake, urination, appetite, energy, and weight are stable; drinking looks comfortable. Monitor the pattern. The posture itself is not proven to indicate a disease. Ask your veterinarian at the next appointment or sooner if concern persists.
The dunking began suddenly, or the amount your dog drinks has clearly changed. Contact the dog’s veterinarian for advice, particularly if the change is sustained or you cannot explain it by heat, exercise, or a diet change.
Your dog struggles to drink, repeatedly approaches and retreats from the bowl, coughs or gags while drinking, or takes much less water. Arrange veterinary advice promptly. Difficulty drinking can prevent adequate hydration and may reflect pain or illness.
Face-dunking occurs with lethargy, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, appetite change, excessive panting, or signs of dehydration. Call a veterinarian promptly. The additional signs matter more than the unusual posture.

Check whether drinking has actually changed

Owners often notice the dramatic muzzle movement but not a gradual change in total water consumption. A simple 24-hour log gives your veterinarian more useful information than an estimate based on how often the bowl appears empty.

  1. At the start of a 24-hour period, measure the water you put into the bowl. Use a measuring jug or a marked container.
  2. Record every refill and the approximate amount added. Note whether another pet can reach the same bowl, because shared drinking makes the total impossible to assign to one dog.
  3. At the end of the period, measure what remains. Include water in other bowls, outdoor containers, fountains, or food if your dog consumes a substantial amount of moisture that way.
  4. Write down heat, unusual exercise, panting, a recent food change, medications, vomiting, diarrhea, and how often your dog urinates. These details help distinguish a temporary increase from a persistent pattern.
  5. Repeat the measurement for another day if practical. Do not force your dog to drink, withhold water, or perform a home “water-deprivation test.”

These observations are not a substitute for an examination. They simply help the clinic assess whether the change is real and how urgent it may be.

How much water is typical?

The American Kennel Club gives a broad general context of about 40–60 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight per day. Weather, activity, illness, and diet—especially wet food—can move a dog outside that range without automatically indicating disease. It is not a rigid daily target for every individual.

The same AKC guidance describes more than 100 milliliters per kilogram per day as the technical definition of polydipsia, citing Brian Collins, DVM, of Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center. A smaller volume can still be medically important if it is a substantial increase over that dog’s established baseline. Conversely, a single hot day or a long run should not be treated as proof of polydipsia.

Increased thirst often leads to increased urination, but the two should be considered together. Kidney disorders, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, liver disease, some medications, and other conditions can produce this pattern. Only a veterinary history, examination, and appropriate testing can identify the cause.

When face-dunking is accompanied by increased thirst or urination

Make a note of whether the bowl is being emptied faster, whether your dog asks to go outside more often, has larger urine volumes, or has accidents indoors. Also record weight changes, appetite, energy, and medication use. A veterinarian may ask about all of these rather than focusing on the muzzle position.

Do not restrict water to reduce urination or to see whether the behavior stops. Deborah Mandell, VMD, of the University of Pennsylvania’s Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, warns that if a pet does not replace water lost through increased urination, dehydration or worse can result. Keep fresh water available unless a veterinarian specifically gives different instructions.

When your dog is drinking less or seems uncomfortable

A dog that dunks its face but is also taking in less water, stopping repeatedly, or appearing reluctant to swallow needs closer attention. Possible reasons for reduced drinking include dental discomfort, other illness, stress, or an unclean bowl, but these are possible explanations for a change in drinking—not proven causes of face-dunking itself.

Look for dry or sticky gums, weakness, unusual sleepiness, vomiting, weight loss, or repeated refusal of water. PetMD advises contacting a veterinarian promptly when drinking drops substantially, especially when lethargy, weight loss, dry gums, or vomiting are present. If your dog cannot keep water down, is very weak, collapses, or has breathing trouble, seek urgent veterinary care.

What a veterinary assessment may involve

Tell the clinic exactly when the behavior started, whether it happens at every drink, and whether the dog drinks before, during, or after dunking. A short video can show the movement without requiring the dog to repeat it in the clinic. Bring your 24-hour water estimate and a list of medications, supplements, food, and recent environmental changes.

VCA Animal Hospitals’ client guidance emphasizes that the search for answers begins with a complete history and physical examination. Depending on the findings, the veterinarian may recommend blood tests, urinalysis, dental or oral examination, imaging, or other tests aimed at the change in thirst, urination, appetite, weight, or energy. The unusual posture by itself does not determine which tests are appropriate.

Safe ways to manage the situation at home

Keep water accessible and clean

Provide fresh water in a stable, clean bowl that your dog can reach without crouching awkwardly or competing with another pet. Wash away slime, food residue, and debris regularly. If the dog has suddenly become reluctant to use one bowl, offer a second clean bowl while arranging veterinary advice; do not assume a replacement bowl has solved the underlying issue.

Reduce mess without treating the behavior

If the muzzle dunking splashes water onto the floor, a waterproof bowl mat can contain the mess. It is a cleanup aid only. No cited veterinary source shows that a mat prevents, corrects, or treats face-dunking, and no particular product or model has been established as superior.

Observe rather than repeatedly interrupt

Unless your dog is at risk of choking, slipping, or ingesting contaminated water, allow a brief observation from a safe distance. Repeatedly scolding or physically pulling the dog away can make drinking stressful and may obscure whether the dog is having trouble. Capture a video and note the circumstances instead.

What not to conclude from the posture alone

  • It does not prove that your dog is trying to cool itself.
  • It does not prove playfulness, a breed-specific instinct, or a behavioral disorder.
  • It does not establish kidney disease, diabetes, Cushing’s disease, or another diagnosis.
  • It does not have a known prevalence or breed rate; no published figure for how often dogs dunk their muzzles while drinking was identified in the cited material.
  • It does not justify limiting water or changing medication without veterinary direction.

The useful question is not “What does this posture always mean?” but “Has my dog’s hydration, comfort, or overall health changed at the same time?”

A practical checklist before you call

  • When did the dunking begin, and was the onset sudden?
  • Does it happen at every drink or only with a particular bowl, location, or time of day?
  • Is the total amount consumed higher, lower, or unchanged compared with normal?
  • Is urination more frequent or more plentiful?
  • Can your dog drink, swallow, and breathe comfortably?
  • Have appetite, weight, energy, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, or gum moisture changed?
  • Could another pet, outdoor source, wet food, heat, exercise, or medication explain the apparent change?
  • Can you provide a short video and a 24-hour water estimate?

If the answers show normal intake and comfortable drinking, monitoring is reasonable while you raise the issue with your veterinarian if it continues to worry you. Any meaningful change in intake, difficulty drinking, or accompanying illness signs moves the situation out of simple observation and into veterinary assessment.
