A tiny zap while petting your cat is most likely a static-electricity discharge: charge builds as your hand and the cat’s coat slide against each other, then releases when contact changes. A 2024 Northwestern University explanation offers a more detailed account of how sliding contact can generate charge—but it was a general model, not an experiment on pet cats. The available sources do not establish the shock’s voltage, energy, or health effects.
How does petting a cat create static electricity?
Petting involves sliding contact: your hand moves over fur while the coat and skin resist that motion. In a September 2024 account of a general triboelectricity model, Northwestern Engineering describes how that resistance can deform the surfaces where they touch. The leading and trailing regions of the moving contact experience different forces and deformations, which can produce different charges. Those charges can drive a current.

The model centers on elastic shear: a material’s resistance to sliding causes it to deform. Because the deformation is not identical at the front and back of the moving contact, the resulting charges are not identical either. When charge later finds a path to move or balance out, you may feel a brief zap.

This is a useful way to understand the familiar cat-and-human example, not proof that this precise process has been measured in cats. Northwestern’s report describes a broad explanation for rubbing-induced electricity; it does not report a controlled trial involving cat fur and a person’s hand.

Is “friction causes static” the whole explanation?
“Rubbing causes static” is a convenient shorthand, but it skips the proposed mechanical pathway. The Northwestern account emphasizes how sliding and shear deform surfaces and how differences along the direction of motion can produce charge. It does not reduce the process to a simple, settled rule that electrons move from fur to skin every time someone pets a cat.
The research team’s earlier work, as described by Northwestern, found that rubbing could bend tiny surface protrusions and that the deformation gave rise to voltage. The 2024 model developed that account to calculate current, with results reported as agreeing with experimental findings across a range of cases. The report does not say those cases involved cat fur.

Northwestern published its account on September 18, 2024, describing research led by emeritus materials science and engineering professor Laurence Marks, with Karl Olson as first author. The paper, “What Puts the ‘Tribo’ in Triboelectricity,” appeared in Nano Letters on September 17, 2024. Read Northwestern’s explanation of the model; Phys.org’s report gives the publication details.

The sources available here do not provide a measured voltage, current, or energy for a shock during petting, or establish how often it occurs. There is therefore no reliable cat-specific number to compare with household electricity, and the general model cannot determine the strength of an individual zap.

These sources also do not assess whether a static shock can harm a cat or identify symptoms that require veterinary care. If your cat seems persistently distressed or you are concerned about its health, contact a veterinarian rather than relying on a general explanation of static electricity.
Can you reduce static shocks when petting your cat?
A secondary consumer article suggests that increasing room humidity or lightly moistening your hands or a cloth may reduce static. These suggestions were not tested in Northwestern’s study, and the source set does not establish a cat-specific remedy or guarantee that either approach will prevent shocks. ScienceInsights’ practical suggestions also mention grooming tools and bedding, but they are consumer advice rather than veterinary guidance.

- If you already want to address dry indoor air, a room humidifier is an optional measure—not a proven treatment for a cat’s static shocks. Consider room coverage, ease of cleaning, and whether it displays humidity when choosing one.
- You can try lightly moistening your hands before petting, but the available sources do not show that this has been tested on cats.
- Do not apply human anti-static products or chemicals to your cat based on this advice. The cited practical source raises concerns, but the evidence here does not support a detailed safety assessment.
What the science does—and does not—say about cats
Northwestern’s report places the cat example within a much older and broader subject: triboelectricity, the generation of electrical charge through contact and movement. The university notes that Thales of Miletus reported friction-induced static electricity in 600 BC after rubbing amber with fur. That historical anecdote is not a measurement of modern petting shocks.
