Dogs should travel in a suitable restraint every time they ride in a car. A restraint reduces driver distraction and limits a dog’s uncontrolled movement during sudden braking or a collision. It does not make a crash harmless, and no single harness, carrier or crate is proven safest for every dog and vehicle. Keep the dog away from airbag-equipped seating, never let the dog ride on the driver’s lap, and use only the restraint’s specified attachment method.
Why should dogs be restrained in cars?
It prevents driver distraction
A loose dog can climb between seats, obstruct the steering wheel or pedals, paw at the driver, or demand attention at the wrong moment. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises safely restraining dogs and specifically says not to let one sit on the driver’s lap. A restraint keeps the dog’s movement within a defined area so the driver can concentrate on traffic.

It limits uncontrolled movement in a crash
In a collision, a dog that is not secured can be thrown through the passenger compartment. The animal may strike a seat, door, dashboard or another occupant, and its movement can create additional hazards for people in the vehicle. A properly fitted restraint cannot eliminate those forces, but it reduces the dog’s freedom to travel around the cabin.

It keeps the dog away from an active airbag
Airbags deploy extremely quickly and are designed around an adult occupant in a belted seating position. The AVMA recommends keeping dogs out of an airbag-equipped front passenger seat and away from the deployment path. The safest placement is one that follows the restraint manufacturer’s instructions while remaining outside an airbag zone.

How does a dog seat belt or other restraint help in a crash?
All vehicle restraints work by managing movement. The attachment transfers some of the dog’s motion to a harness, carrier or crate and then to the vehicle’s anchoring structure. That can keep the dog from becoming a free-moving object and can reduce the chance that the animal interferes with the driver before or during a crash.
The protection depends on the complete system: the dog’s size, the product design, the way it is fitted, the vehicle connection and the position in the cabin. A clip attached to a walking harness, a long extension tether or an improvised connection may not manage crash forces as intended. Restraint is therefore a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that the dog will avoid injury.
Where should a dog sit in the car?
Place the dog in a restrained position away from front airbags. Many owners use a rear seating position because it separates the animal from the driver and the passenger-side airbag, but the correct location also depends on the product’s instructions and the vehicle’s anchor points. Do not place a restrained dog where an airbag can deploy into it.

Which type of restraint should you choose?
No source establishes one universally safest option for every dog, vehicle and journey. Evaluate the complete setup rather than relying on a marketing phrase such as “car safe.” The useful questions are whether the exact product has independent dynamic crash-test evidence, whether it fits the dog’s weight and dimensions, how it attaches to the vehicle, where it can be positioned, and whether the test covered the configuration you intend to use.
| Approach | Potential benefit | Evidence and checks before use |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle harness | Allows the dog to remain in a familiar seated or lying position while limiting movement. | Confirm independent dynamic testing for the exact model and size, not merely a claim that the harness is suitable for cars. Follow the specified attachment and fitting instructions. The Center for Pet Safety (CPS) tested selected harnesses, not every harness sold today. |
| Carrier | Creates an enclosed space that can prevent roaming around the passenger compartment. | The AVMA lists carriers among available travel equipment. Check the carrier’s size limits, vehicle attachment method and any evidence for the exact carrier and installation. A general carrier label is not proof of crash performance. |
| Crate | Can provide a contained area for a dog that is comfortable travelling in a crate. | Verify that the crate is appropriate for the dog and vehicle, that it is secured as directed and that evidence covers that crate, orientation and attachment. Do not assume that a household crate has been crash tested. |
| Walking harness, seat-belt clip or long tether | May appear convenient for short trips. | Do not assume crash protection. A walking harness may not be designed for collision loads, and a clip or extension tether may load the dog’s neck or body unpredictably. CPS cautions that extension tethers and zipline-style products can increase injury risk. |
What do crash tests actually show?
The 2011 CPS pilot
When the Center for Pet Safety conducted its 2011 pilot, it reported that no standardized test existed for canine vehicle restraints. The pilot used conditions modeled on Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 213, the U.S. standard for child restraint systems, and testing was performed at MGA Research Corporation. A specially designed 55-pound crash-test dog model—not a live animal—was used.
CPS reported a 100% failure rate among the harnesses included in that pilot for protecting both the dog model and human occupants. That figure describes the products and protocol in the 2011 pilot. It is not a measurement of every harness currently on the market, and it does not establish how an untested product would perform in a different vehicle or collision.

The 2013 CPS harness study
In its 2013 harness-study results, CPS said: “With the exception of the Sleepypod Clickit Utility, the harness products tested in 2013 were deemed insufficient in design, materials and overall performance.” That statement applies to the harness products and methods in that study. It should not be read as a current universal certification, a guarantee for later versions or a conclusion about harnesses that were not tested.

The two CPS studies demonstrate why product-specific evidence matters. A result from one size, attachment method, crash pulse or vehicle cannot automatically be generalized to another harness, carrier, crate or collision. CPS testing is not a government approval system, and the existence of a test result does not mean that every product using similar safety language has passed.
Are dog car harnesses crash tested?
Some products have undergone independent dynamic testing, while many products marketed for vehicle use have not. “Crash tested,” “tested,” or “car safe” can describe very different claims. Before buying, look for all of the following:

If a seller cannot identify those details, treat the claim as unverified rather than as proof of crash protection. Even a documented result applies only within its stated conditions.
How to fit and use a restraint correctly
- Measure the dog and read the limits. Record the dog’s current weight and the measurements requested by the manufacturer. Select a size within the stated range; do not choose by breed name alone.
- Inspect the equipment. Before each trip, check webbing, stitching, buckles, clips, crate doors and carrier seams for wear or damage. Replace equipment that has been compromised.
- Fit it according to the instructions. Adjust every strap or support so the restraint is secure without restricting normal breathing or movement. A loose fit can allow excessive travel; an incorrect fit can concentrate loads on the wrong part of the body.
- Use the designated vehicle connection. Attach only to the anchor, belt path or hardware specified for that product. Do not substitute a household leash, an unapproved extension or a different clip because it seems to fit.
- Position the dog away from airbags. Check the vehicle manual and the product directions together. Keep the dog out of an airbag-equipped front passenger position.
- Test the setup while parked. Confirm that the dog cannot reach the driver, slip out, open a crate door or pull the attachment free. Recheck after the dog changes position.
- Stop and reassess if the dog shows distress. Panting, struggling or repeated escape attempts may indicate poor fit, inadequate acclimation or a medical problem. Resolve the cause before a longer trip.
How can you acclimate a dog to car restraint?
Introduce the equipment before the first long journey. Let the dog investigate it indoors, then practice wearing or entering it for brief periods while the car is parked. Progress to the engine running, a very short drive and gradually longer trips. Reward calm behavior and avoid forcing the dog into a setup that causes panic. Acclimation does not replace crash evidence or correct fitting; it makes it more likely that the dog will remain settled and secured.
Plan breaks for water, toileting and movement. Never leave a restrained dog unattended in a parked vehicle, where temperature can become dangerous even when the trip began comfortably.

What do surveys say about how often owners restrain dogs?
Available studies show that restraint is not universal, but their samples have important limits.
| Study | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive Veterinary Medicine, 2019 | 55% of U.S. respondents, 72% of U.K. respondents and 67% of Australian respondents said they restrained their dogs in vehicles. | The researchers used convenience samples and called for more representative research. These percentages are not national prevalence estimates. |
| Veterinary teaching hospital survey, visits from May 28 to August 2, 2024; PubMed record published 2026 | 195 of 533 dogs (36.6%) were transported using a restraint. | This was a single-hospital population and should not be generalized to all dog owners. |
The 2019 study is recorded at PubMed, and the later hospital survey is described in this 2026 PubMed record. The differing figures reflect different samples and methods, not a direct trend line.
What restraint cannot guarantee
A secured dog can still be injured by crash forces, contact with the restraint, the vehicle interior or another object. Outcomes vary with collision direction and severity, vehicle structure, product design, fit, attachment and the dog’s anatomy. No available evidence supports promising that a restraint will prevent all injuries or deaths.
Crash-test findings also have a defined scope. The CPS pilot’s 55-pound model, the 2013 harness results and any future test each describe particular products and conditions. Use those results to ask better questions about a purchase, not to assume that an entire product category has passed or failed.
A pre-trip safety checklist
- Dog is secured in a correctly sized, undamaged restraint.
- Attachment follows the product’s vehicle instructions exactly.
- Dog is not on the driver’s lap and cannot reach the controls.
- Position is outside front airbag deployment areas.
- Any crash-test claim identifies the exact product, size and configuration.
- Dog has been gradually acclimated to the equipment.
- Water, planned breaks and temperature safety have been considered.
The practical answer
Restrain your dog on every car journey because containment addresses two preventable hazards at once: distraction before a crash and uncontrolled movement during one. Choose equipment using product-specific evidence, fit it to the dog, attach it as directed and keep it away from airbags. Treat “crash tested” as a claim that must be checked—not as a guarantee—and remember that even the best-supported restraint reduces risk rather than removing it.
