Why Gibbons Look Awkward Walking: Arms Evolved for Brachiation

Gibbons look awkward on the ground because their long arms and lightweight swinging anatomy evolved for brachiation. Gait studies show they are not bad walkers: they use bipedal, tripedal and quadrupedal movement and adjust stride effectively.

Gibbons look hilariously ungainly on the ground for a good evolutionary reason: their bodies are optimized for moving beneath branches, not for copying a short-armed, four-legged terrestrial mammal. Long forelimbs give a swinging gibbon reach and leverage between handholds. On land, those same proportions make the arms look oversized, so gibbons often raise them while walking to help control balance.

That appearance is misleading. Gibbons are not incapable walkers. A study of white-handed gibbons recorded seven terrestrial gait types, including bipedal, tripedal and quadrupedal travel. The animals adjusted stride and speed effectively, leading the authors to conclude that adaptations for arboreality and brachiation had not constrained their terrestrial locomotor abilities.

Why are gibbons’ arms so long?

The main answer is brachiation: traveling by hanging beneath branches and swinging from one handhold to the next. In a forest canopy, a longer arm can reach a more distant branch, increase the distance covered per swing and give the animal more options when branches are unevenly spaced.

This is a different mechanical problem from walking on the ground. A ground walker repeatedly supports body weight through limbs that push against a solid surface. A brachiating gibbon suspends its body from the hands while the forelimbs act as moving links in a pendulum-like system. Selection therefore favored reach, a large shoulder range of motion and a lightweight, rapidly repositioned swinging arm.

Sharon M. Swartz, John E. A. Bertram and Andrew A. Biewener’s in-vivo strain study, published in Nature in 1989, found that gibbon forelimb bones experience substantial tension during brachiation, with relatively little bending and compression compared with many other mammalian limb-loading patterns. Their description of the “slender elongated form” of gibbon forelimb bones attributes it to functional adaptation for habitual armswinging locomotion.

What in a gibbon’s anatomy helps it swing?

Long forearms extend the reach

Gibbons have forearms that are long relative to the humerus and to the body. Their shoulder region includes a well-developed scapular spine, and the forelimb is shaped for large, controlled arcs rather than compact support close to the torso. A radius that is thicker in the sagittal than in the transverse direction is another feature described in anatomical work on gibbon forelimbs.

Muscles stay close to the body

Long arms would be difficult to accelerate if all their mass were distributed far from the shoulder. Gibbons solve that problem by concentrating much of the forelimb muscle mass proximally, near the trunk, while long tendons extend toward the hands. This arrangement keeps the distal arm relatively light and reduces rotational inertia. Michilsens and colleagues reported that the non-supporting arm can therefore be brought forward quickly for the next handhold.

In practical terms, the arm that is not carrying the animal’s weight is prepared for a fast recovery swing. The shoulder supplies a broad movement range, while the lightweight distal segment can be redirected without the same energetic cost as a heavily muscled arm.

Hind limbs add another source of control

Gibbon legs are not passive equipment. Channon and colleagues described long-fascicled hip and knee flexors that permit a broad range of motion. Those muscles can help raise the body’s center of mass during brachiation and support transitions among hanging, climbing, clambering and landing postures.

How does a gibbon move through the trees?

Brachiation is more than simply hanging and letting gravity do the work. A typical sequence combines shoulder motion, trunk control, hand release and a timed reach.

  1. Grip a branch. The gibbon hangs below a branch with one or both hands, using the shoulder and trunk to control its body position.
  2. Build a swing. The body moves like a pendulum beneath the support. Leg position and trunk motion can alter the arc and timing.
  3. Release at the useful point in the arc. Letting go too early or too late would reduce reach or make the next grasp harder.
  4. Recover the free arm. The non-supporting arm is moved forward rapidly toward the next branch; proximal muscle mass and long distal tendons help keep this motion quick.
  5. Catch and decelerate. The new handhold absorbs the load while the shoulder, elbow, trunk and legs stabilize the body for the next swing.

Gibbons also climb, leap and clamber. Their locomotor repertoire is therefore broader than the single word “brachiation” suggests, even though suspension and swinging are the defining specialization.

Why do gibbons walk so weird?

On the ground, a gibbon’s proportions are visibly different from the short-forelimb, four-legged template familiar from many terrestrial mammals. The arms extend far below the torso, the shoulders are built for extensive motion, and the animal’s center of mass must be managed over a relatively narrow base of support when it stands upright.

Gibbons commonly walk bipedally with their arms raised or held out. Those arms act as movable counterbalances: changing their position changes the distribution of mass and helps control side-to-side and forward-backward motion. To a human observer, the raised-arm posture can look like exaggerated wobbling even when it is an effective balance strategy.

They can also place a hand on the ground and use a tripedal gait, or travel on all four limbs. Switching among these patterns lets a gibbon respond to surface texture, speed, obstacles and the need to keep a hand available for support. A short clip showing one awkward-looking bipedal sequence cannot represent the whole repertoire.

Are gibbons actually bad at walking?

No. “Bad walker” is a visual impression, not a measured diagnosis.

Evie E. Vereecke, Kristiaan D’Août and Peter Aerts analyzed 254 digitized observations of voluntary locomotion in white-handed gibbons. The animals were filmed on grass, a smooth surface and a pole. The researchers identified seven terrestrial gait types and found bipedal, tripedal and quadrupedal travel across overlapping speed ranges.

During bipedal walking, the gibbons increased both stride length and stride frequency as speed rose. At a given speed, they used relatively longer strides at lower stride rates than humans. That combination shows active speed control rather than a failure to coordinate the limbs.

“Adaptations for arboreality and brachiation … have not constrained the gibbon’s terrestrial locomotor abilities.”

The study involved white-handed gibbons, so its seven gait categories should not be treated as a universal count for every gibbon species. It does, however, directly challenge the idea that long arms leave gibbons unable to walk competently.

How do gibbons keep balance on different surfaces?

Walking on a broad, flat floor and walking along a narrow horizontal pole require different compromises. A flat surface offers a large area for foot placement. A pole reduces that margin and makes errors in lateral balance more consequential.

A three-dimensional kinematic study of Hylobates lar, published in Primates in 2024, compared walking on a flat surface with walking on a horizontal pole. It examined how the gibbon positioned its center of mass and adjusted joint motion to remain balanced on the arboreal-like substrate. The value of this work is not a claim that every gibbon uses one identical gait; it demonstrates that gait and posture are sensitive to the surface beneath the animal.

The raised arms seen during terrestrial bipedalism fit this broader pattern. They provide another controllable segment for shifting mass and responding to disturbances. On a pole, the same animal can alter joint motion and center-of-mass placement rather than simply repeating its flat-ground stride.

Gibbons and humans: why the same walk looks so different

Feature Gibbons Humans
Primary locomotor setting Forest canopy, branches and other arboreal supports Ground surfaces designed around upright terrestrial walking
Forelimb role in the signature movement Suspension, reach and swinging between handholds Arms are not the weight-bearing engine of ordinary walking
Typical bipedal balance aid Arms may be raised or extended while the trunk and legs manage balance Arms usually swing beside the body while the feet provide a broad support sequence
Documented terrestrial options Bipedal, tripedal and quadrupedal gaits, plus other forms of ground travel Ordinary walking and running are primarily bipedal
Speed adjustment in the cited study White-handed gibbons increased stride length and stride frequency as speed increased Humans also adjust stride variables, but with different limb proportions and balance demands

The comparison is about mechanical priorities, not a ranking of walking ability. A body optimized for canopy travel will look unusual when placed in a human-sized room, just as a human body would be poorly suited to rapid hand-over-hand travel beneath branches.

What people often get wrong about gibbon locomotion

“They only brachiate.”

They do not. Brachiation is central to their specialization, but gibbons also climb, leap, clamber and use bipedal, tripedal and quadrupedal movement on the ground.

“Long arms make walking impossible.”

Long arms change the balance problem; they do not eliminate the ability to solve it. The white-handed gibbon observations show several functional terrestrial gaits and effective speed modulation.

“Every gibbon walks the same way.”

Species, individuals, surfaces and circumstances can alter posture and gait. The seven-gait result came from one study of white-handed gibbons, while the 2024 three-dimensional work focused on Hylobates lar under two substrate conditions.

“A funny video proves a locomotor defect.”

Short videos usually capture a few steps, often on an unfamiliar surface. They do not show the full range of gait transitions, the animal’s speed, or how it performs on a pole, grass or a smooth floor.

The simplest way to interpret the awkward walk

Think of a gibbon as a specialist whose most important limbs were shaped around a different support system. In the canopy, a long arm is a reach-and-swing tool, and its bones and soft tissues are arranged to handle tensile loading while keeping the moving end light. On the ground, that same arm becomes a balance aid attached to a body with unusual proportions.

“Specialized for swinging, visually awkward on the ground” is therefore more accurate than “bad at walking.” The first description explains both the comedy of the silhouette and the biomechanics behind it; the second mistakes unfamiliar form for poor function.
