Why Hamsters Die: Warning Signs, Common Causes, and How to Help

A UK veterinary-record study found a median age at death of 1.75 years among hamsters in primary care. Learn the recorded causes, urgent warning signs, and practical ways to reduce injury and support wellbeing.

Hamsters may die from gastrointestinal illness, tumors or other masses, breathing problems, and injuries. In a 2022 study of UK veterinary records, the median age at death among hamsters under primary veterinary care was 1.75 years. That is a finding from one clinical cohort—not a lifespan guarantee for every hamster or species.

Because hamsters can become seriously ill without obvious warning, changes in appetite, activity, breathing, droppings, or posture deserve prompt attention. If your hamster looks or acts different, contact a veterinarian.

What causes hamsters to die?

The most useful large-scale evidence available here is a 2022 study by Royal Veterinary College researchers using UK primary-care records for 16,605 hamsters. Among deaths with a recorded cause, the most common specific labels included gastrointestinal illness called “wet tail,” abdominal mass, neoplasia, and dyspnoea (difficulty breathing).

Recorded cause Share of deaths with a recorded cause
“Wet tail” 7.88%
Abdominal mass 6.40%
Neoplasia 5.38%
Dyspnoea 3.99%

These percentages are from deaths with a cause recorded in the study, not from all hamsters. They reflect labels in veterinary records, and some deaths had no recorded cause. The study’s “wet tail” label may be used broadly for diarrhea; it does not, by itself, establish a specific infection or underlying pathology. Technically, the term can refer to proliferative ileitis.

Injuries are another important risk

Traumatic injury affected 15.41% of hamsters in the veterinary-care cohort as a disorder group. That is not the proportion of deaths caused by injury. The study authors noted that falls, escapes, and encounters with other pets can be injury routes that owners may be able to prevent. The records did not include housing methods, so they cannot establish that a particular housing arrangement caused the injuries.

How long do hamsters live?

The UK study reported a median age at death of 1.75 years among hamsters seen in primary veterinary care. A median describes the midpoint of that study population; it does not predict an individual pet’s lifespan. The cohort came from participating UK practices and records collected in 2016, so it may not represent hamsters that never received veterinary care, other countries, or every species.

The cited evidence does not establish a universal hamster lifespan or show how much any one care change extends life. Good husbandry supports welfare, but it cannot guarantee a longer life or prevent every illness.

What signs mean a hamster needs veterinary attention?

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your hamster has diarrhea, difficulty breathing, reduced appetite, weight loss, unusual inactivity, a wound, or a hunched posture. Changes in droppings or urine—including producing none—also warrant attention. Small mammals can deteriorate, and these signs cannot identify the cause without an examination.

  • Watch for sluggishness, loose stool, runny eyes or nose, and abnormal breathing. The CDC advises contacting a veterinarian immediately when a small mammal seems sick or shows such signs.
  • Notice changes from your hamster’s normal appetite, activity, coat, breathing, and droppings; a daily check makes it easier to spot them.
  • Arrange a veterinary check after bringing a hamster home, and identify a clinic experienced with hamsters that can provide emergency care.

Do not give medication unless a veterinarian prescribes it. Merck Veterinary Manual warns that some antibiotics can seriously harm hamsters.

What to do if a hamster dies suddenly

A sudden death cannot be reliably explained from appearance or timing alone. Several illnesses and injuries can produce serious outcomes, and the study’s cause-of-death labels were clinical-record categories rather than definitive explanations for every animal. If you need to understand what happened—especially if another hamster may be exposed to the same hazard—contact a veterinarian and describe the timeline, symptoms, diet, housing, and any possible injury or exposure. An examination, and sometimes further testing, may be needed to determine a cause.

How can you reduce preventable risks?

Make the enclosure secure and suitable for natural behavior

Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service recommends solitary housing, hiding places, solid flooring, and opportunities to burrow, forage, bathe, and chew. Its hamster-care guidance, updated in 2026, recommends paper-based bedding at least 3–5 cm deep. Keep bedding clean and provide enough depth for burrowing. Choose material that is suitable for burrowing, low in dust, and practical to keep clean; no bedding product is established here as a way to prevent death.

Prevent falls, escapes, and unsafe handling

  • Handle your hamster gently over a secure, low surface or in another area where a fall is unlikely.
  • Check the enclosure for escape routes and keep it inaccessible to other household pets.
  • Provide clean water and clean bedding, and check the enclosure regularly for hazards.

Support dental health

Hamsters’ front teeth grow continuously. Merck advises providing safe chew items, such as small wooden blocks, to help wear them down. Overgrown teeth can cause drooling, poor appetite, and weight loss; contact a veterinarian if you notice these signs.

Build a veterinary plan before an emergency

Find a hamster-experienced clinic and confirm how to reach emergency care outside routine hours. That gives you a clear next step if breathing, appetite, activity, or other health signs change.
