If threatened, a chick can drop into the water, swim to cover and climb back to safety. Adults are unusual, too: they ferment leafy food in an enlarged crop, a specialization that helps explain their bulky build and weak flight. The hoatzin is sometimes called a “living fossil,” but that nickname does not mean it is a dinosaur or an unchanged ancestor of modern birds.
Why do hoatzin chicks have claws on their wings?
Young hoatzins have functional claws on the first and second digits of each wing. The University of Texas at Austin’s Digimorph resource calls the juvenile wing claw one of the bird’s most distinctive features and explains that chicks use it to climb along branches and through vegetation.
This is a practical adaptation for a nestling that lives among trees overhanging water. When threatened, a chick may drop from its nest into the water, swim toward vegetation where it can hide, and climb back to safety. A peer-reviewed study, “Hoatzin nestling locomotion: Acquisition of quadrupedal limb coordination in birds,” describes the chicks’ unusual coordination of wings and legs as they move through branches. The claws are climbing tools, not miniature weapons or evidence that the bird is a dinosaur.
How does the hoatzin digest leaves?
The adult hoatzin has an enlarged crop, the pouch in a bird’s digestive tract where food is stored and processed. Microbes in this foregut ferment leafy food before it continues through the digestive system. The strategy is unusual among birds and resembles the foregut fermentation used by ruminant mammals, though hoatzins are birds, not ruminants.

The International Ornithologists’ Union describes this specialized fermentation and notes the pungent odor associated with the nickname “stinkbird.” The odor is a qualitative description; the cited natural-history sources do not provide a measured figure. The unusual digestive system is central to understanding the hoatzin’s distinctive anatomy and lifestyle.
Why is the hoatzin a poor flier?
The large crop and modified skeleton leave less space for the attachment of flight muscles. As a result, hoatzins are relatively poor fliers: they can make short flights and maneuver through riverside vegetation, but they are not adapted for powerful, sustained flight. Their movement combines climbing and perching with limited flight rather than long-distance travel through the air.

Where do hoatzins live?
Hoatzins inhabit riparian lowlands in the Amazon and Orinoco regions of South America. “Riparian” means associated with rivers and their banks. That setting connects the bird’s traits: chicks can escape into water and climb among dense vegetation, while adults feed on leafy material and move through the riverside canopy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the hoatzin a living dinosaur or a living fossil?
No. Hoatzins are living birds, not dinosaurs. The American Museum of Natural History describes them as “the only living representatives of one of the most ancient lineages of birds.” That phrasing captures their evolutionary distinctiveness, but it does not establish that hoatzins are direct ancestors of dinosaurs or that they have remained unchanged through time.

“Living fossil” is a popular shorthand for an isolated lineage with unusual, ancient-looking traits. It can be useful if treated as a nickname rather than a literal scientific conclusion. The hoatzin’s wing-clawed chicks, foregut fermentation and modified skeleton make it distinctive; they do not make it a surviving dinosaur.

How the hoatzin compares with a typical foliage-eating bird
| Feature | Hoatzin | Typical foliage-eating bird |
|---|---|---|
| Nestling movement | Chicks have functional wing claws and can climb through branches using coordinated wing-and-leg movements. | No functional wing claws for this kind of climbing are characteristic of the comparison. |
| Digestion | Microbes ferment leafy food in an enlarged crop and foregut. | Typical avian digestion does not use the hoatzin’s specialized foregut fermentation. |
| Flight | Relatively poor, short-range flight suited to moving through riverside vegetation. | Stronger sustained flight is the contrast described for this comparison. |
| Evolutionary description | A distinctive, isolated lineage; “living fossil” is a popular label, not proof of being unchanged. | Not characterized by the hoatzin’s particular combination of traits. |
What makes the hoatzin unusual?
- Its chicks climb with wing claws: the claws help them move through vegetation and return to safety after a water escape.
- Adults ferment leaves in the foregut: microbes in the enlarged crop process plant food in a way unusual among birds.
- Its flight fits a riverside life: the enlarged crop and modified skeleton limit space for flight-muscle attachment, contributing to relatively weak flight.
- Its evolutionary story needs careful wording: it is a distinctive ancient bird lineage, not a living dinosaur.
