It is one of the most useful things a volunteer can do, and it can be considerably more demanding than most people expect, especially with the youngest kittens. The four reasons below explain why it is worth considering. The section on age explains what it asks of you in time.
What fostering a kitten means
A foster placement is temporary care. The shelter or rescue stays involved in the kitten’s medical care, its records and the adoption process, while you provide a home in the meantime. The ASPCA describes fostering as giving animals a safe and healthy environment in which to heal, grow, or receive extra care (ASPCA, “Why Should You Foster a Cat or Kitten? Here are 5 Great Reasons!”, July 16, 2026).
Four reasons to foster a kitten
1. The kitten grows up in a home rather than a holding area
Kittens that are too young for adoption, more vulnerable to disease, or in need of socialization are often placed in foster homes because a domestic setting supports them better than a shelter room. The ASPCA’s foster-type guidance notes that older kittens may be fostered for exactly these reasons (ASPCA, “Which Type of Animal Foster Should You Sign Up to Be?”). Regular handling, quiet routines and everyday human contact are what a foster home can offer that a busy shelter cannot always provide.
2. It frees space and resources for other animals
Every kitten placed in a foster home is one fewer animal occupying shelter capacity, and that space and those resources can go to other animals in need. The ASPCA lists freeing shelter space and resources among the main reasons fostering matters (ASPCA, July 16, 2026). For scale, the ASPCA’s 2024 Annual Report says its Los Angeles Kitten Foster Program helped 1,781 kittens in 2024 with the help of more than 500 foster volunteers. That is one program’s reported output, not a national figure (ASPCA 2024 Annual Report).

3. Very young kittens get the care their stage requires
The youngest kittens are the ones most likely to need a foster home. The ASPCA calls them neonates and pee-wee kittens, and says these groups are especially vulnerable and may need round-the-clock care. Foster caregivers of neonates may also be asked to bottle- or syringe-feed. The ASPCA’s guidance on foster types makes clear that this is a different job from fostering an older kitten, and a home that is set up for it can give a very small animal the attention it needs at each stage of growth.
4. Helping a kitten move toward adoption can be rewarding
Many foster caregivers find it satisfying to see a kitten go from fragile to confident and then into a permanent home. The ASPCA also notes that fostering can bring companionship and a new routine to the caregiver, and that foster animals help introduce prospective adopters to them (ASPCA, July 16, 2026). This is a possible benefit rather than a guaranteed one. Some placements are short, some kittens take longer to adopt, and the experience depends on your household and the kitten.

Multiple nipple shapes are available to suit pets of different sizes and developmental stages, increasing the success rate of feeding.

The included measuring cup and funnel make the process of mixing formula more precise and spill-free, making it the ideal assistant for pet owners and animal rescuers.
Age changes the commitment
The age of the kitten determines how much time fostering will take. The table uses the ASPCA’s terms and age ranges, which are the organization’s own categories and not universal clinical definitions.
| Group (ASPCA term) | Age range (ASPCA) | What the ASPCA says | What it asks of you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neonatal kittens | 0 to 4 weeks | Especially vulnerable; may need round-the-clock care; caregivers may need to bottle- or syringe-feed | The highest time commitment. Ask whether hands-on feeding training is provided before you accept a neonate. |
| Pee-wee kittens | 4 to 8 weeks | Especially vulnerable; may need round-the-clock care | A high time commitment, though the feeding and monitoring demands should be confirmed with your program |
| Older kittens | Not stated in the ASPCA foster-type guidance | May be fostered because they are too young for adoption, more susceptible to disease, or in need of socialization | Depends on the individual kitten. Ask what health checks, socialization work and reporting the program expects. |
What support to expect, and what varies
Support differs by organization, so do not assume one program’s arrangements apply to another. The ASPCA says its foster caregivers are provided food, supplies, support and access to needed veterinary services (ASPCA, “What Does It Mean to Be an Animal Foster Caregiver?”, April 30, 2025). Its New York City foster listing goes further: it says the ASPCA covers foster animal medical care and expenses, provides food, equipment and supplies, and offers hands-on bottle-baby training (ASPCA, “Fosters Needed in NYC at the ASPCA”). Those are terms for that listing, not a standard that every shelter or rescue meets.

Questions to ask before you accept a kitten
- Which age groups do you place with foster caregivers, and do you currently have neonates, pee-wee kittens or older kittens that need a home?
- How many hours a day does a kitten of this age need, and is round-the-clock care expected?
- What training do you provide, including bottle or syringe feeding if the kitten needs it?
- Which supplies and equipment do you provide, and what, if anything, should I buy myself?
- Who covers veterinary care and related expenses, and how do I contact a vet if the kitten becomes ill?
- How long is a typical placement, and what happens if the kitten’s health or the placement changes?
- How are prospective adopters introduced to foster kittens, and how much contact will I have with that process?
Is fostering a good fit for you?
- You can set aside the daily time a kitten of its age needs for the full length of the placement.
- You can follow the health, feeding and handling instructions your program gives you.
- You can keep a kitten’s time in your home separate from the commitment to adopt, and accept that it will leave.
- You have a backup plan for work trips, illness, or other changes in your schedule.
- Everyone in your household agrees to the arrangement.
Start with a local shelter or rescue
Look up the shelters and rescues near you, and ask their foster coordinators the questions above before you commit. A good program will answer them clearly. If the answers are vague, that is useful information too. Start with a conversation about the age of kitten they need most, and you will know quickly whether fostering fits your home.
