Why Do Cats Groom Each Other? Reasons Why Cats Socially Groom

Cats groom each other in friendly and tense moments alike. Here is how to read posture, ears, and what follows a grooming episode.

Cats groom each other through allogrooming, and it often happens in relaxed, friendly settings. It is not, however, reliable proof of affection on its own. A 2026 observational study found grooming in socially tense interactions too, so the licking alone tells you little. What tells you more is the cats’ body posture, their ears and face, whether the receiving cat stays, and what happens before and after the grooming.

What allogrooming means

Allogrooming is the term for one animal grooming another. In cats it is most often seen between a mother and her kittens and between cats that share a home. A general cat-care overview from Cats.com describes it in both mother-kitten and multi-cat settings and notes that social relationships and hierarchy may play a role. The overview is a general guide rather than a study, so treat its description as background rather than as measured evidence.

What the 2026 study observed

The most detailed recent work is a video-based observational study published in 2026. It recorded 53 pairs of cats (106 cats in total) and described how grooming fit into the surrounding behavior. Because the study is observational, its findings are associations between behaviors that were seen together, not proof of what any cat intended.

Behaviors seen in friendly contexts

In the affiliative interactions the study describes, grooming appeared alongside:

  • Huddling or prolonged body contact
  • Synchronized sitting or lying, with the two cats in similar positions

These are useful context clues. They are not a checklist that confirms a friendship when all of them are present.

Behaviors seen in tense contexts

The same study also described grooming in interactions that looked tense. The behaviors it recorded there included:

  • Displacement behaviors such as lip licking or head shaking
  • Overt acts such as striking or biting

The authors suggest that grooming in these moments may sometimes work as appeasement, or as a subtle threat. That is an interpretation of observed sequences. It does not show that every grooming episode has the same motive.

Why one behavior can mean two things

Grooming is a single action, but the sequence around it changes its meaning. A cat that grooms a companion while both stay relaxed is in a different situation from one that grooms while the companion’s ears are flattened and its body is turned away. Reading the whole episode is more reliable than reading the licking alone.

How familiarity and relationships fit in

A PubMed-indexed study reported that familiarity and relatedness were significantly associated with proximity and allogrooming in its sample. In practical terms, cats that know each other well, or are related, were more likely to be seen grooming. This does not guarantee that siblings or familiar cats will bond, and it does not mean that unfamiliar cats will never groom. Familiarity raises the likelihood of friendly grooming; it does not settle how any given pair will behave.

The older idea about rank

An earlier study of animals kept in confined groups reported that higher-ranking animals groomed lower-ranking ones more often. That finding is sometimes repeated as a rule that the groomer is the dominant cat. The more recent evidence points to a context-dependent picture, so rank should be treated as one possible factor, not a universal explanation.

How to read a grooming episode

The table below compares the cues that point toward relaxed affiliation with those that point toward tension. Use it as a set of questions to ask, not as a score.

Cue Reads as relaxed and affiliative Reads as tension
Body posture Similar positions; huddling or sitting and lying in sync One cat leaning over the other
Ears Not described as rotated back in relaxed episodes Ears rotated backward
Receiving cat’s response Stays and remains in contact Tries to leave or escape
Displacement behaviors Not described as a sign of tension in the study Lip licking or head shaking
What follows Calm separation or mutual play Swatting, biting, or escape
Relationship context Familiar or related pairs were more often seen grooming in one PubMed-indexed study Not stated in the 2026 study

What to do if you are watching

  1. Look at posture first. Note whether both cats hold similar positions or whether one is leaning over the other.
  2. Check the ears and face. Ears rotated backward, lip licking, or head shaking mean the interaction may be tense.
  3. Watch the receiving cat. If it stays and stays relaxed, the contact is more likely to be welcome. If it tries to leave, that is a clear signal.
  4. Observe what comes next. Calm separation or play suggests the interaction was friendly. Swatting, biting, or a chase suggests it was not.
  5. If the interaction escalates or one cat seems uncomfortable, give both cats space. Interrupt calmly by creating distance rather than grabbing either cat, and do not force continued contact.

When to involve a veterinarian

Grooming is normal, but some changes are worth raising with a vet. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any of the following:

A single social-grooming episode is not enough to diagnose a medical or behavioral problem, so look at patterns over time.

A note for introductions

Cats.com suggests that brushing or combing both cats is one possible way to share scent during an introduction. This is an optional step. It is not required for allogrooming to happen, and it does not tell you how the cats feel about each other.

What the evidence does not establish

No reliable population-wide figure for how often cats groom one another has been established, so this article does not offer one. The 2026 study’s sample size describes the scope of its observations, not how common the behavior is. Its suggestions about appeasement or threat are interpretations of observed sequences, and they should be read that way.
