Why Is My Betta Fish Losing Color? What to Check First

Color loss alone cannot identify what is wrong with a betta. Check behavior, aquarium temperature and water quality, and seek veterinary advice if symptoms worsen or persist.

A betta losing color may be reacting to stress or illness, but fading or white areas alone cannot identify the cause. Check the fish’s behavior and appetite, then measure the aquarium’s temperature and water quality. Correct clear husbandry problems carefully, and contact an aquatic or exotic-animal veterinarian if your betta worsens or does not recover.

What color loss can—and cannot—tell you

Color change is a clue, not a diagnosis. A betta that looks pale or is turning white needs to be assessed alongside its swimming, appetite, fins, skin, and recent changes to the aquarium. The appearance alone cannot establish a parasite, bacterial infection, or other disease. Do not choose medication or salt treatment based only on fading.

Some bettas with marble or koi patterns may change color naturally. That is one possible explanation, not proof that a fish is healthy; a sudden shift or one accompanied by other symptoms warrants closer attention.

Check your betta and tank in this order

  1. Observe the fish. Note when the color change began and whether your betta is eating and swimming normally. Look for lethargy, abnormal swimming, worsening or frayed fins, unusual spots, or growths.
  2. Measure the water temperature. Use an aquarium thermometer rather than relying on touch. The University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine recommends 76–81°F for betta tanks. Temperature is one factor to check, not a stand-alone treatment for color loss. University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine
  3. Test the water. Check ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. PetMD recommends monitoring these parameters weekly; its care sheet gives a pH range of 6.5–7.8 and says a value near 7 is ideal. It also notes that keeping pH close to your tap water can make regular water changes more practical. PetMD’s Betta Fish Care Sheet
  4. Review recent changes. Consider whether the aquarium is newly set up, a water change was missed, new fish or objects were added, or replacement tap water was not conditioned. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies new tank syndrome as a water-quality problem that commonly occurs during the first six weeks after setup. Merck Veterinary Manual
  5. Correct water issues carefully. If a water change is needed, use conditioned replacement water and avoid an abrupt temperature difference. Tap water should be treated to remove chlorine and chloramine; the University of Illinois also recommends testing for heavy metals when tap water is used.

When to contact a veterinarian

Seek advice from a veterinarian experienced with aquatic animals if your betta is deteriorating, has concerning signs such as abnormal swimming or worsening fins, or does not recover after clear husbandry problems are corrected. Do not wait if the fish appears seriously ill. If the cause is unclear, a veterinary assessment is safer than trying an unconfirmed medication.
