Why Is My Cat Chasing Their Tail? 8 Possible Causes and What to Do

Cats may chase their tails during play, but frequent chasing or biting can also signal stress, itch, pain, injury, or another problem. Learn what to watch for and when to call a veterinarian.

Cats may chase their tails as play, particularly when young. Repeated chasing or biting can also be linked to stress, itch, pain, injury, or a compulsive behavior pattern. Those possibilities overlap, and tail chasing alone cannot identify the cause. If the behavior is new, persistent, painful, or causing damage, contact a veterinarian to assess your cat and rule out medical problems.

Why cats chase their tails

Tail chasing is a behavior, not a diagnosis. Look at what happens before and during an episode, how often it occurs, whether your cat bites the tail, and whether you see other changes. A playful episode around a toy is different from persistent biting or chasing paired with skin twitching or sensitivity.

1. Kitten play

Young cats may play with or chase their own tails. If your kitten does this briefly and otherwise seems comfortable and well, play may be the explanation. Tail biting, escalating frequency, or signs of discomfort deserve closer attention. VCA’s kitten guidance notes that kittens may play with or chase their tails.

2. Stalking and pouncing practice

Cats use stalking and pouncing in play. Notice whether your cat is engaged with a toy or reacting to another play cue; a moving tail can become part of that sequence. PetMD’s guide to cat body language describes play-related body cues that can help you interpret the surrounding behavior.

Combined with the random motions of the butterfly and tail, it creates an irresistible and engaging play experience that keeps your cat happily chasing even when they're by themselves

3. Too little routine or stimulation

A cat with limited activity or an inconsistent routine may turn to tail chasing as play. VCA includes insufficient routine and stimulation among possible factors in compulsive behaviors. Add predictable interaction and supervised play, but do not assume enrichment will resolve a medical problem. VCA’s overview of compulsive disorders in cats discusses routine, stimulation, and interactive chase toys.

4. Anxiety or conflict

Stress or conflict can trigger displacement behavior: an action such as tail chasing or over-grooming that occurs when a cat is highly aroused. Consider what happened immediately beforehand, including changes in the home or tension with another animal. As VCA authors Debra Horwitz, DVM, DACVB, and Gary Landsberg, DVM, DACVB, DECAWBM, put it: “Situations of conflict and anxiety in which the cat becomes highly aroused may lead to displacement behaviors such as tail chasing or over-grooming.”

5. Itch, including fleas or allergies

Itch can prompt a cat to bite or focus on its tail. Fleas and environmental allergies are among the possibilities described in VCA’s kitten tail guidance. A cat’s skin or coat may need veterinary assessment; tail-directed biting does not reveal the cause by itself.

6. Pain or a tail injury

Pain or a wound can make a cat focus on its tail, and repeated biting may worsen an injury. Watch for tenderness, swelling, bleeding, visible damage, or a tail that hangs limp. VCA’s first-aid guidance for tail injuries explains why tail damage warrants attention. Do not treat persistent biting as a behavior problem until pain or injury has been considered.

7. Compulsive behavior

Tail chasing can occur as part of a compulsive behavior pattern, especially when it is frequent, repetitive, and difficult to interrupt. However, medical causes should first be assessed or treated; a behavior that looks compulsive may have another explanation. VCA’s compulsive-disorders guidance discusses this distinction.

8. Feline hyperesthesia or a similar condition

Feline hyperesthesia can involve tail chasing along with rippling or twitching skin over the lower back, sudden running or jumping, vocalizing, or sensitivity to touch. Other conditions can look similar, so these signs do not establish hyperesthesia. A veterinarian needs to evaluate the symptoms and consider other causes. See PetMD’s overview of feline hyperesthesia.

How to judge whether the behavior needs attention

Consider the pattern and the cat’s overall condition rather than trying to diagnose from one sign. Keep notes or a short video, if you can capture an episode safely, to show your veterinarian.

  • Context: Does the episode happen during play, around a toy, or after an apparent stressor?
  • Frequency and intensity: Is it occasional, or regular, prolonged, and hard to interrupt?
  • Physical signs: Is your cat biting the tail, showing a wound, twitching or rippling across the lower back, reacting to touch, or holding the tail limp?
  • Other changes: Note changes in energy, appetite, grooming, sociability, hiding, or aggression. These details can help your veterinarian assess the situation.

What you can do at home

If it looks like play and your cat is otherwise well

Offer a predictable routine, daily interaction, and supervised interactive play. Chase toys and environmental stimulation may support enrichment, including for cats with compulsive behavior patterns, but they do not diagnose or treat pain, skin disease, or an established compulsive disorder. Avoid turning an episode into a chase or confrontation.

If your cat bites or damages the tail

Contact a veterinarian rather than relying on toys or distraction alone. Repeated biting can cause further injury, and both preventing more damage and addressing the underlying cause may be necessary.

When to contact a veterinarian

Arrange veterinary advice if tail chasing is regular or obsessive, your cat repeatedly bites its tail, the behavior is new and comes with other health or behavior changes, or your cat seems painful or sensitive. Seek prompt veterinary attention for a limp tail, significant bleeding or swelling, severe damage, or changes in tissue color.

If an episode includes lower-back skin rippling or twitching, sudden running or jumping, vocalizing, or sensitivity to touch, avoid handling your cat during the episode and contact a veterinarian. These signs can occur with hyperesthesia, but other conditions can produce a similar picture.
