The best cat carrier is the one your cat can fit in comfortably and that you can secure, clean and carry safely. For most cats, start with a rigid, well-ventilated carrier that opens at the front and top; choose a soft bag only if your cat is comfortable in one and does not scratch or chew its mesh. How to choose a cat carrier
Fit the carrier to your cat
Your cat should be able to stand, lie down and change position, without so much spare room that they slide around. Cats Protection’s general guide is to choose a carrier a few centimetres taller and longer than your cat’s standing measurements. Measure your cat and compare those measurements with the interior dimensions when available; listed external dimensions do not establish usable interior space. Kittens grow, so a carrier that fits now may soon be too small.

Prioritise security, access and ventilation
Choose a lightweight carrier made from sturdy plastic or metal wire, with ventilation on at least two sides and secure closures. A front door makes it easier for a cat to enter voluntarily; a top opening can help you lower in a reluctant cat or allow an examination while the cat remains inside. Cats Protection describes front and top access as useful features in its carrier guidance. A removable or washable base or liner also makes cleaning easier.
Choose the carrying style for the cat, not the photo
Soft bags can be lighter to carry and often use mesh panels for ventilation, but mesh may be vulnerable to claws. For cats that scratch, chew or resist, a rigid carrier is generally the safer choice. Backpack carriers have a more serious welfare concern: Cats Protection says, “No, we don’t recommend carrying your cat in a backpack-style carrier.” Its guidance notes that many restrict a cat’s ability to reposition and that walking motion can be stressful. A bubble window alone is not evidence of comfort or safety.

A rigid alternative highlighted by The Independent
In its September 2026 comparison, The Independent named the Catit Cabrio its overall pick. It reported plastic construction, dimensions of 51 × 35 × 33 cm, weight of 3.04 kg and an 11.3 kg limit. The Independent cited easy cleaning and front and top access, while noting that the lid has no door. These are that publication’s review findings, not a universal fit recommendation. The same comparison also named Pets at Home Roadrunner, Ferplast Atlas 20 Deluxe and a Petsfit expandable carrier as alternatives.

Which type is right for your situation?
- For most vet trips: Look first for a rigid carrier with secure closures, adequate ventilation and front and top access. A removable top can make handling easier, but check that the carrier is secure when assembled.
- For a calm cat that does not scratch: A soft-sided bag may be easier to carry. Inspect the mesh and seams, and make sure the bag retains its shape and closes securely.
- For a kitten: Measure carefully and consider how soon the kitten may outgrow a small model. A carrier that is only suitable now can become an unsafe or uncomfortable choice.
- For cycling: The Trixie basket is designed to attach to compatible handlebars, but it is not universal. Use it only if the cat is comfortable with transport and the fit to the bike is secure.
- For air travel: Do not treat a retailer’s or reviewer’s “airline approved” label as permission to fly. Verify the airline’s current carrier dimensions, pet-weight rules, route requirements and whether the cat will travel in the cabin or hold.
How to get your cat comfortable with a carrier
Make the carrier familiar well before a necessary trip. Cats Protection’s carrier training advice recommends gradual familiarisation rather than introducing it only when travel is imminent.

Leave the carrier open and stable at home, with the door secured open or removed if the design allows.
- Add familiar bedding and treats. Let your cat investigate and enter at their own pace. Do not force them inside.
- Build up in small steps. Once your cat is relaxed going in, briefly close the door, then reopen it. Progress to lifting the carrier only when your cat remains comfortable.
- Prepare for travel. Use familiar bedding or an absorbent liner, and ensure every closure is secure before leaving.
Cats Protection also mentions pheromone spray as an optional preparation aid, advising that it be sprayed 15 minutes before the cat enters. It does not replace gradual familiarisation.

Check airline and route rules separately
Carrier dimensions alone do not determine whether a cat can fly. Ask the airline about current cabin or hold arrangements, permitted carrier dimensions, combined pet and carrier weight limits, and rules for the specific route. Requirements can vary by airline and change over time.
The UK government’s approved pet travel routes and carriers guidance, last updated 5 October 2026, covers bringing cats, dogs or ferrets into England, Scotland and Wales. It directs travellers to follow pet travel rules and check additional requirements with the travel company. It lists exemptions for travel from UK countries, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland. This route guidance does not establish that a retail carrier meets an airline’s cabin requirements.
