A cat that eats less, refuses food, or seems hungry but cannot chew or swallow may be ill, in pain, nauseated, stressed, reacting to medication, or struggling with a physical problem. Loss of appetite is a symptom, not a diagnosis—and it is not a reason to assume your cat is simply being fussy. Contact a veterinarian promptly about a new or persistent change in eating.

What “not eating” can mean

Notice what happens around food: does your cat show no interest, sniff and walk away, or approach hungrily but drop food, chew on one side, or have trouble swallowing? These patterns can help describe the problem to a veterinarian, but they do not identify its cause.

Reduced appetite or no interest in food

Nausea, pain, fever, dehydration, illness, stress, a changed routine, impaired sense of smell, an adverse medication effect, or an unpleasant association with food can reduce a cat’s interest in eating. A cat may also eat less because of conditions affecting organs or the digestive system. Several factors can occur together. Cornell lists possible causes including kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal disease, dental problems, and environmental or psychological factors. Cornell Feline Health Center and International Cat Care describe a broad range of medical and behavioral contributors.

Wanting food but having trouble eating

Veterinarians call difficulty picking up, chewing, or swallowing food despite apparent hunger “pseudo-anorexia.” Mouth or throat inflammation, periodontal disease, jaw or chewing pain, neurologic problems, oral tumors, body pain, or swallowing difficulty may be involved. This is different from simply lacking interest, but it still reduces intake and needs veterinary attention. VCA’s overview of anorexia in cats explains this distinction.

When to contact a veterinarian

Call promptly if your cat is eating less than usual, has stopped eating, or is eating differently. Cornell advises immediate veterinary consultation when anorexia is noticed; do not treat a time threshold as a safe period to wait.

  • Cornell says a mature cat’s health can be severely affected when appetite loss persists for as little as 24 hours.
  • For a kitten younger than six weeks, Cornell warns that 12 hours without food can pose a lethal threat.
  • Sudden inappetence is particularly concerning in an overweight or obese cat because of the risk of hepatic lipidosis, a serious liver condition.

These figures come from Cornell’s feline anorexia guidance; they are reasons to act promptly, not owner waiting rules. A cat that appears acutely ill needs urgent veterinary advice. The appropriate urgency depends on the cat’s condition and other signs.

How a veterinarian may investigate appetite loss

The goal is to find and address the cause, rather than treating appetite loss as a diagnosis by itself. The veterinarian will take a history and examine your cat, including the mouth and teeth, where pain can interfere with eating.

Depending on the findings, assessment may include blood work, electrolyte testing, radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, or biopsy. Not every cat needs every test: a veterinarian selects further diagnostics based on the examination and the individual case. Cornell recommends a thorough examination followed by indicated laboratory work or imaging; VCA describes additional tests that may be considered.

Appetite Stimulant for Cats, Liquid Vitamin B12 & Methylcobalamin Drops
  • Why B12 Matters for Cats: Cats cannot produce Vitamin B12 on their own. They rely entirely on diet, but digestive issues, pancreatic problems, or age can block absorption. Studies link low B12 to appetite loss, weight changes, and fatigue—making supplementation an important part of daily care
  • Supports Appetite & Eating Habits: If your cat sniffs at food and walks away, low B12 may be part of the problem. Supplementing with methylcobalamin, the active form of B12, helps restart normal fat and protein metabolism—restoring healthy hunger cues and interest in meals
  • Helps Maintain Energy & Vitality: Vitamin B12 is vital for red blood cell formation. Without it, cats often feel weak or sluggish. With steady supplementation, they regain natural energy for daily play, climbing, and exploring around the house
  • Extra Help for At-Risk Cats: Some breeds, such as Siamese and Maine Coons, are more prone to B12 deficiency. Senior cats, or those with digestive or pancreatic conditions, also benefit from extra support—helping them maintain weight, activity, and overall wellness
  • Easy-to-Give, Stress-Free Care: No injections required. Just add the liquid to meals for simple, stress-free supplementation. A practical way to help picky eaters, older cats, or cats in recovery get the nutrition they need—so owners worry less and cats enjoy life more

What treatment may involve

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and the cat’s condition. A veterinarian may treat nausea or pain, address dehydration or an illness, or correct a relevant mineral imbalance. Appetite stimulants may be appropriate in some cases, but they do not replace diagnosis or needed nutrition. Merck notes that their success varies and they are not recommended as the primary way to provide nutrition to critically ill animals. Merck Veterinary Manual

If a cat cannot eat enough, a veterinarian may recommend temporary feeding-tube support with an individualized feeding plan. VCA’s 2024 critical-care guidance identifies hospitalized cats with partial anorexia for three days or complete anorexia for 48 hours as candidates for nutritional intervention. Those are clinical-care thresholds for hospitalized patients—not instructions for owners to wait at home. VCA: Critical Care Nutrition for Cats

Why force-feeding is not a default home fix

Do not force food into your cat’s mouth or syringe-feed without a veterinary plan. It can cause aspiration or increase stress and food aversion, particularly if the cat begins to associate eating with feeling unwell. Cornell lecturer Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, says, “We’ve gotten away from the idea of forcing food into a cat’s mouth.” Cornell, VCA, and International Cat Care all caution against making forced feeding a routine solution. Ask the veterinarian how to support your cat’s nutrition safely while the cause is being investigated.
