Published estimates range from 12 to 18 hours a day, depending on the source; those figures are general context, not a cutoff for illness. Pay attention to how your cat acts when awake and whether other changes appear.
How much do cats normally sleep?
Cats Protection estimates that domestic cats sleep about 12 to 18 hours a day, while VCA gives a range of 12 to 16 hours. Both describe broad patterns, and sleep can vary from day to day. Cats often rest in separate bouts rather than sleeping through the day in one stretch. They may choose warm, comfortable, elevated, or sheltered places to nap.

Kittens may need extra rest while growing, and senior cats may tire sooner and sleep more. Age can help explain a familiar pattern, but it does not automatically explain a new change. There is no established number of hours that, by itself, distinguishes healthy sleep from a medical problem.

What matters more than the number of hours?
Compare today’s pattern with what is usual for your cat. A cat who naps often but wakes readily, responds to familiar cues, and takes part in favorite activities may simply be following its normal routine. More concerning is a clear shift: sleeping much more, seeming listless when awake, or dropping activities your cat normally enjoys.
Look at the whole picture, not sleep alone:
- Responsiveness and energy: Is your cat alert when awake, or unusually withdrawn and hard to engage?
- Appetite and weight: Is your cat eating less, refusing food, or losing weight?
- Movement: Is your cat reluctant to jump, walk, or move around as usual?
- Hiding and behavior: Is your cat hiding more or acting unlike itself?
- Toileting and drinking: Have urination, bowel movements, or drinking habits changed?
- Breathing or stomach symptoms: Is breathing difficult or unusually rapid? Is there persistent vomiting or diarrhea?
These observations can help you describe a change to a veterinarian; they cannot identify its cause at home. Illness or pain are among the possibilities when increased sleep accompanies reduced activity, withdrawal, or other symptoms.

When should you call a veterinarian?
Arrange veterinary advice about a noticeable change
Contact your veterinarian if your cat is sleeping substantially more than usual, is not acting like itself, or has another sign of illness. Reduced appetite, persistent vomiting or diarrhea, weight loss, urinary changes, and lethargy are among the signs Cornell’s Feline Health Center identifies as reasons to seek veterinary guidance. If you are unsure, call and describe what you are seeing.
Do not assume a new slowdown is simply old age. In senior cats, becoming less active or more reclusive can be associated with joint problems, among other possibilities, and needs assessment in context.

Seek urgent or emergency care for severe signs
Get emergency veterinary care if your cat is difficult to wake or cannot stand up and walk when prompted. Breathing difficulty also warrants urgent veterinary direction; contact an emergency clinic promptly rather than waiting to see whether it resolves.

What to note before you speak with the vet
Write down when you first noticed the change and what is different. Note sleep and energy, appetite, hiding, mobility, breathing, drinking, and toileting. Include whether the signs are getting worse and whether your cat still responds to familiar cues or participates in usual activities. This record can help your veterinarian assess your cat; it is not a substitute for an examination.
Why might a cat sleep more?
The amount of sleep alone cannot establish why an individual cat has changed. Rest patterns naturally vary, while illness, pain, or age-related problems may be relevant when increased sleep comes with lethargy, withdrawal, difficulty moving, or other symptoms. A veterinarian can evaluate the combination of signs and your cat’s history.
