Why Is My Dog Coughing? Causes and Treatment

A dog’s cough can come from infection, airway irritation, pneumonia, tracheal collapse, heartworm disease, or heart problems. Learn which signs need emergency care and what to do while waiting for a veterinarian.

A dog may cough because something briefly irritated the throat—or because there is a significant problem affecting the airways, lungs, heart, or parasites. The sound alone cannot identify the cause. A single cough after drinking is different from repeated coughing, a wet cough, or coughing accompanied by breathing changes.

Use your dog’s breathing, energy, appetite, recent exposures, and the duration of the cough to judge how urgently to act. If your dog is struggling to breathe, has blue or pale gums, collapses, or may have an airway obstruction, go to an emergency veterinarian immediately.

When a coughing dog needs urgent care

Seek emergency veterinary care now if your dog has any of these signs:

  • Labored, gasping, or unusually rapid breathing
  • Blue, gray, or very pale gums or tongue
  • Weakness, collapse, or fainting
  • A sudden inability to breathe, choking, or suspected foreign material in the airway
  • Severe lethargy alongside coughing or other respiratory signs
  • A cough that is worsening quickly

A persistent or repeated cough is not necessarily an emergency, but it deserves veterinary advice—especially if it produces mucus or occurs with nasal discharge, fever, poor appetite, vomiting, lethargy, or reduced tolerance for exercise. Call the clinic before arriving and mention the respiratory symptoms; the practice may ask you to wait separately from other dogs.

Common reasons dogs cough

1. Canine infectious respiratory disease (“kennel cough”)

Kennel cough is a group of contagious respiratory illnesses, not one single infection. Causes can include Bordetella bronchiseptica, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, herpesvirus, and Mycoplasma. Dogs can spread these infections through respiratory droplets, direct contact, and shared bowls, toys, or contaminated surfaces.

Boarding, daycare, grooming, shelters, competitions, and dog parks are common exposure settings. A typical sign is a sudden, dry, harsh, sometimes “honking” cough that begins roughly 5–10 days after exposure. An uncomplicated case may start improving within about five days, although coughing can continue for 10–20 days.

Dogs with uncomplicated infectious respiratory disease may otherwise eat, drink, and behave normally. A wet cough, fever, marked tiredness, or poor appetite raises concern for pneumonia or another more serious condition.

2. Irritation, choking, or a foreign object

Smoke, dust, chemical fumes, food particles, grass awns, and plant fragments can irritate the throat or airways. This may cause a short episode of coughing. A lodged object is more serious and can cause sudden, repeated coughing, gagging, choking, or difficulty breathing.

Do not reach blindly into your dog’s throat or push an object farther down. If breathing is impaired or the coughing began suddenly while chewing or eating, treat it as an emergency.

3. Pneumonia

Pneumonia is inflammation and infection of the lungs. It can follow bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic, or protozoal disease, or aspiration of vomit, food, or improperly administered medication. The cough may be dry or wet, and a dog may also develop fever, lethargy, reduced appetite, nasal discharge, or breathing difficulty.

A wet cough or coughing up mucus or foam is more concerning than an isolated dry cough. Dogs with suspected pneumonia may need chest X-rays, oxygen, supportive care, and prescription treatment; severe cases require hospitalization.

4. Tracheal collapse

In tracheal collapse, weakened cartilage allows sections of the windpipe to narrow during breathing. It is particularly common in middle-aged and older small dogs, including Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, and Toy Poodles.

The cough is often chronic and may sound harsh or honking. Excitement, exercise, heat, or pressure from a collar can trigger it. Use a harness rather than a neck collar while the cause is being investigated.

A normal X-ray does not always rule out tracheal collapse. Because the collapse may occur only during inhalation or exhalation, a veterinarian may recommend fluoroscopy or bronchoscopy if the history strongly suggests it.

5. Chronic bronchitis or inflammatory airway disease

Chronic bronchitis is considered when a dog has coughed for at least two months and other respiratory diseases have been excluded. It is seen particularly often in small dogs. Coughing may be worse after rest, with exercise, or after exposure to an irritating environment.

Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may include prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, bronchodilators, or a cough suppressant. These medicines are not interchangeable with human products.

6. Heart disease or heart failure

Heart disease can cause coughing when it leads to fluid accumulation in the lungs, but a cough in a dog with a heart murmur does not automatically mean heart failure. Primary lung disease is often a more likely explanation, particularly when the dog has no breathing difficulty.

Heart failure becomes more concerning when coughing occurs with an increased resting breathing rate, trouble breathing, exercise intolerance, weakness, fainting, or a swollen abdomen caused by fluid accumulation. A veterinarian may use chest X-rays and an echocardiogram to distinguish heart-related disease from airway or lung disease.

7. Heartworm disease

Heartworm disease can cause a mild, persistent cough, reluctance to exercise, fatigue after moderate activity, reduced appetite, and weight loss. Early infection may cause few obvious signs, so a dog that appears well can still be infected.

Diagnosis and treatment must be directed by a veterinarian. Exercise restriction is especially important for infected dogs because both the disease and its treatment can create dangerous complications. Consistent veterinarian-recommended heartworm prevention is safer than waiting for symptoms.

8. Other possibilities

Allergies, airway inflammation, fungal or other parasitic infections, congenital abnormalities, tumors, and disorders of the larynx or esophagus can also cause coughing. Age, breed, vaccination status, heartworm-prevention history, travel, and the exact pattern of the cough help narrow the list.

What the type of cough can—and cannot—tell you

Cough pattern Possible clues What to do
Brief cough after drinking, eating, or inhaling dust Temporary irritation or mild aspiration Monitor if it stops promptly; seek advice if it recurs or breathing changes.
Dry, harsh, honking cough Infectious respiratory disease, tracheal collapse, or another airway problem Arrange veterinary advice, especially after contact with other dogs.
Wet or productive cough Pneumonia or significant airway inflammation is possible Contact a veterinarian promptly.
Cough triggered by exercise, excitement, or collar pressure Tracheal collapse or another airway disorder Restrict exertion, use a harness, and arrange an examination.
Cough with fast breathing, weakness, or fainting Potentially serious lung or heart disease Seek urgent veterinary care.

This table is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Several conditions produce the same type of cough, and some dogs have more than one problem.

How a veterinarian finds the cause

The appointment usually begins with a physical examination and a detailed history. Be ready to explain:

  • When the cough started and whether it is becoming more frequent
  • Whether it is dry, honking, wet, or associated with mucus
  • Whether it occurs at rest, at night, after exercise, or during excitement
  • Recent boarding, daycare, grooming, shelter, dog-park, or travel exposure
  • Vaccination and heartworm-prevention status
  • Possible contact with smoke, chemicals, plants, food, or foreign objects
  • Changes in appetite, energy, body weight, vomiting, fever, or breathing

Depending on the findings, testing may include chest or neck X-rays, blood tests, heartworm testing, pulse oximetry, PCR testing of respiratory samples, bronchoscopy, fluoroscopy, echocardiography, or analysis of airway fluid. Chest X-rays can help identify pneumonia and other lung disease but may miss intermittent tracheal collapse.

Record a video of the cough if possible. Note how many episodes occur each day, what triggers them, and whether anything is brought up. These details can be more useful than trying to imitate the sound in the examination room.

Treatment for a coughing dog

Treatment depends on the underlying cause:

  • Uncomplicated infectious respiratory disease: Rest, hydration, reduced activity, and monitoring may be enough. Antibiotics are not automatically needed because kennel cough can involve viruses and multiple organisms. A veterinarian may prescribe them when bacterial infection or pneumonia is suspected.
  • Pneumonia: Treatment may include appropriate antimicrobials, supportive care, and oxygen. Dogs with severe disease may need hospitalization.
  • Tracheal collapse: Weight management when appropriate, avoiding neck pressure, reducing triggers, and prescribed medication may improve quality of life. Medical treatment does not repair weakened cartilage; severe cases may need specialist procedures or surgery.
  • Chronic bronchitis: Airway-directed treatment may include prescription anti-inflammatory medication, bronchodilators, and selected cough suppressants.
  • Heart failure: Treatment targets fluid buildup and the underlying heart disorder.
  • Heartworm disease: The veterinarian will create a specific treatment plan and exercise restriction protocol.

Cough suppressants are supportive medication, not a cure. They may help a persistent, nonproductive cough but can be inappropriate when a dog needs to clear mucus, including in some cases of pneumonia. Never use one without veterinary direction.

What you can do while waiting for the appointment

  1. Keep your dog calm. Excitement and strenuous exercise can intensify coughing and breathing difficulty.
  2. Use a harness. Avoid pressure on the neck, particularly if pulling on a collar triggers the cough.
  3. Separate your dog from other dogs. Until an infectious illness is ruled out, avoid daycare, dog parks, grooming, shared bowls, toys, and chews.
  4. Reduce airborne irritation. Keep your dog away from smoke, aerosols, fragrances, dust, and cleaning fumes. A plain humidifier may soothe irritated airways; do not add essential oils.
  5. Monitor breathing and general condition. Worsening effort, unusual breathing speed, pale or blue gums, collapse, poor appetite, or severe lethargy requires urgent care.
  6. Do not give human medicine. Cough, cold, allergy, and pain products may contain acetaminophen, ibuprofen, decongestants, dextromethorphan, or other ingredients that can harm dogs. Ask a veterinarian before giving any medication.

If your dog eats medication, cough drops, or a potentially toxic product, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.

Common misconceptions

  • “Every cough is kennel cough.” No. Infection is only one possibility; airway collapse, pneumonia, heartworm disease, heart disease, foreign material, and tumors can also cause coughing.
  • “A heart murmur and a cough prove heart failure.” No. Many dogs with murmurs are not in heart failure, and lung disease is a common alternative explanation.
  • “Antibiotics cure kennel cough.” Not routinely. Treatment depends on the organism involved and whether bacterial disease or pneumonia is present.
  • “A normal X-ray rules out tracheal collapse.” No. Intermittent collapse may not appear on a still image.
  • “Human cough medicine is safe.” No. Combination products can contain ingredients toxic or unsuitable for dogs.

FAQ

Is a dog coughing always an emergency?

No. A brief cough after drinking or inhaling dust may settle quickly. Coughing with labored breathing, blue or pale gums, collapse, choking, or rapidly worsening symptoms is an emergency. Repeated, persistent, wet, or mucus-producing coughing should be assessed by a veterinarian promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long does kennel cough last in dogs?

An uncomplicated case often begins improving within about five days, but coughing may continue for 10–20 days. Keep the dog away from other dogs and contact a veterinarian if symptoms worsen or include fever, lethargy, poor appetite, breathing difficulty, or a wet cough.

Can I give my dog human cough medicine?

No, not unless a veterinarian specifically approves the exact product and dose. Human medicines may contain acetaminophen, ibuprofen, decongestants, or other ingredients that can be dangerous to dogs.

Can heart disease cause a dog to cough?

It can, particularly when heart failure causes fluid to accumulate in the lungs. However, a murmur plus coughing does not prove heart failure; lung and airway diseases are also common. Increased resting breathing rate, breathing difficulty, fainting, weakness, and exercise intolerance are more concerning signs.

The Bottom Line

A dog’s cough may be minor irritation, contagious respiratory disease, pneumonia, tracheal collapse, chronic bronchitis, heartworm disease, or another condition that needs treatment. Keep your dog calm, avoid contact with other dogs, use a harness instead of a collar, and never give human cough medicine. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, abnormal gum color, collapse, choking, or rapid deterioration; arrange a veterinary examination for any repeated or persistent cough.
