Why Is My Dog Itchy? Common Causes of Scratching and Licking

Itching is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Learn how parasites, allergies, infections, and irritation can make a dog scratch or lick—and when a veterinarian should assess it.

If your dog keeps scratching, licking, chewing, or rubbing, the itch is a symptom—not a diagnosis. Fleas and other parasites, allergies, skin infections, and irritation can all cause it, and more than one problem may be present at once. A veterinarian can identify the cause; frequent or persistent itching, skin changes, or self-injury warrant a veterinary exam.

Why is my dog itchy?

Dogs itch for several reasons, including parasites, allergies, infection, and contact irritation. Scratching and licking can damage the skin barrier, allowing a bacterial or yeast infection to develop or worsen the discomfort. The infection and the trigger behind it may both need treatment.

The pattern can help organize what to tell your veterinarian, but it cannot confirm a cause on its own. Fleas may not be visible, and paw licking or itchy ears can have several explanations.

Possible cause Clues a veterinarian may consider What the clue does—and does not—tell you
Fleas and flea allergy Itching often concentrated around the tail base and hindquarters Flea saliva can trigger an allergic reaction. Not seeing fleas does not rule out parasites or flea allergy.
Mites Sarcoptic mange can cause intense itch around the ears, elbows, and hocks; demodex may be associated with localized or generalized hair loss These are possible patterns, not a diagnosis. A veterinarian may use skin scraping to look for mites.
Other parasites Ticks may cause local irritation, particularly with heavy infestation; lice can irritate the skin and may be visible Coat inspection can be useful, but it does not establish the cause of all itching.
Environmental allergy Paw licking, facial rubbing, or itchy or infected ears; possible triggers include pollen, mold spores, and dust mites These signs may occur with atopic dermatitis, but other causes need to be considered first.
Food reaction Skin signs, sometimes alongside gastrointestinal signs A suspected food allergy is assessed with a strict, veterinarian-guided diet trial—not a casual food change or an allergy blood test.
Skin infection or contact irritation Redness, pustules, crusting, scabs, odor, hair loss, scaling, or fluid discharge; possible contact with a cleaning product, shampoo, or plant Infection can be a primary problem or develop after skin damage from scratching. Cytology can help identify bacteria or yeast.

Compulsive licking is considered only after medical causes have been assessed. Systemic disease is another possibility, but it is uncommon among the causes described in veterinary guidance.

Why is my dog licking its paws, rubbing its face, or scratching its ears?

Paw licking, facial rubbing, and itchy ears can occur with environmental allergy, including atopic dermatitis. They are not proof of allergy: parasites, infection, and other skin problems can also cause discomfort. Ear disease may need its own examination and, when indicated, ear cytology.

Flea allergy often affects the tail base and hindquarters, while sarcoptic mange commonly causes intense itch around the ears, elbows, and hocks. These locations are useful observations to share with a veterinarian, not a way to diagnose your dog at home.

What if my dog is itchy but has no fleas?

Visible fleas are not required for itching. Fleas may be difficult to find, and mites, infection, allergies, or contact irritation can cause similar symptoms. A flea comb can help you inspect the coat, but finding nothing with it does not rule out parasites, and combing does not treat the itch.

Keep track of where your dog is itchy, any changes to the skin or ears, and whether the problem is seasonal or present year-round. Contact a veterinarian if the itching is frequent or persistent, if your dog is injuring itself, or if you notice skin changes.

How veterinarians investigate itching

The cause is determined from the dog’s history and examination, sometimes with diagnostic tests. Your veterinarian may ask when the itch started, which areas are affected, whether symptoms change with the seasons, what your dog eats (including treats), what parasite prevention is used, when the problem first appeared, how it has progressed, and what treatments have already been tried.

Common examination steps and tests

Step or test What it helps investigate
Skin history and physical exam Onset, distribution, progression, skin changes, and other clues that help guide the workup
Flea combing Looking through the coat for fleas or flea dirt; it is an adjunct, not treatment or a reliable way to rule out fleas
Skin scraping Looking for mites and other evidence of parasites
Skin cytology Checking for bacterial or yeast infection
Ear cytology, when ear disease is present Checking material from the ear for infection or other abnormalities
Veterinarian-directed elimination diet Investigating a suspected food reaction through a controlled diet trial and response to it
Environmental allergy testing, when appropriate Identifying allergens to help plan immunotherapy after atopy has been diagnosed by exclusion

Atopy is a diagnosis of exclusion: other likely causes must be considered rather than treating an allergy test as proof. Intradermal or serum allergy tests may help identify environmental allergens when planning immunotherapy, but they do not diagnose atopy by themselves. They are not a test for food allergy.

How a food-allergy trial works

Food intolerance and immune-mediated food allergy are not the same thing. When a veterinarian suspects a food reaction, the usual investigation is a prescribed elimination diet, often using a novel or hydrolyzed protein. AAHA’s owner guidance describes a typical initial trial of 8–12 weeks. The veterinarian directs the diet and its duration.

For the trial to be informative, the dog must avoid other foods that could interfere with it. That generally means no unapproved treats, table scraps, or flavored medications; ask the veterinarian how to handle each one. A casual switch to a different commercial food is not a controlled trial. Allergy or intradermal tests are ineffective for identifying food allergy. Following the trial, the veterinarian may advise controlled reintroduction to assess the response.

When should I contact a veterinarian?

Arrange a veterinary exam if itching is frequent or persistent, your dog is damaging its skin, or you see marked redness, bumps or pustules, crusting, scabs, odor, hair loss, scaling, or discharge. A veterinarian can assess whether parasites, infection, allergy, or another problem is responsible and whether more than one issue needs attention.

Do not start human medicines, steroids, antibiotics, or antifungals without veterinary direction. The appropriate treatment depends on the cause, and some medicines can have adverse effects or be unsuitable when infection is present.
